Parakeet Sounds and Vocalizations
Parakeets are VERY smart creatures and are used to living in gigantic flocks with thousands of members. They would use a variety of calls and chirps to stay in contact with each other, to warn of danger, to track down their children, and much more. These same noises and chirps are used when they are pets in your cage! Note that while other parrots can be VERY loud - including cockateils and macaws - parakeets are NOT extremely loud. If you neglect them they may cry out for attention, but if you take good care of them, they will be peaceful and happy! Contented Warble The most common sound heard by most good parakeet owners is the contented warble. Parakeets do this while they are falling asleep, while they are listening to music, hanging out on your shoulder, preening themselves. This is sort of like a cat purring. General Fweeping Parakeets love music and will sing along with songs as best they can by fweeping merrily. They won't normally just spontaneously do this if it's quiet, but if there's music playing they'll add in their own voices. Note that if you leave your parakeets alone you should leave some music playing to keep them company. In the wild, there was always noise. If there was NOT noise it was a sign that there was a predator lurking around. So to leave your parakeets in a dead silent area is going to give them a lot of stress.

MYSTERY BIRDS (Can you help?)

On these pages are the sounds of North American birds (Costa Rican birds have their own page, below) - not just bird calls or bird songs, but all the sounds birds make, such as wing sounds and bill rattles. Since most bird species use different vocalizations for different circumstances, I've tried to tell you what the bird was doing at the time of the recording. It has become even more obvious to me during this project that a bird's vocalizations can be nearly as complex in the information they contain as our own. Individuals of a species sing different songs with different "words" and "phrases" than another individual, and the same species from different territories sing about different things in different ways. One of my ongoing trials is what to call the sounds birds make. They sing, they talk, they whinny and squawk and squeak. They chip and chirp and chack, and the cry and crow and caw. Some ducks quack, some whistle, some peep or screech. Some birds bark or croak or grunt or grumble. Many species, at one time or another mutter and mumble and whisper. You could fill volumes, write epic speeches and set up courses for online universities based on the sounds our amazing feathered friends make. I find myself making up onomatopoeic names like "Chack" and "Pipe" and "Chuckerring". Flickers have a "Klear" call, Great Blue Herons "Gronk". If you have a name for some bird's sound, share it with me - some day I'll write a bird call thesaurus!

Information and Directions
Please read below before clicking here to go to Bird Sound Library.
The AZFO Bird Sounds Library features recordings made in Arizona or, for selected rarities, from nearby areas. Its purpose is to provide a tool for learning local song dialects and calls of species that occur in Arizona and to (eventually) post multiple recordings from throughout the state to document geographical variation in song dialect. We encourage contributions of additional recordings or write ups. See link on sidebar. Excellent advice on getting started making your own recordings is available at the Wildlife Sound Recording Society website Note before using: Connection Speed: These are LARGE files, NOT recommended over dialup connections Browser Compatibility: The Sound Library works best on the PC in Internet Explorer. There have been problems in the past with running it on the PC in Firefox, although these seem to have been resolved. Upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Flash Player if you experience problems. It is reported to work fine on the Mac in both Safari and Firefox.
To Quickly Play a Song: Click on the play button to the left of each species
  • On some browsers you have to click twice (once to activate, once to play)

The sound is very hard to localize, since it is so low, quiet and "generic" (high-pitched sounds are much easier to find), and they are generally closer to you than they seem to be. (72K) This species gets together in a kind of lek - several calling at once, and occasionally flying up in a fluttering courtship display while singing this strange song . An introduction to bird song, the apparatus and the reasons behind it.

Bird Sounds
For information on
bird ears and hearing
see :- Bird Ears Bird song is one of the wonders of the natural world. It has uplifted and cheered human beings for as long as history has been recorded and its beauty continues to charm us more than ever in this modern technological world. Most urban homes play host to some song birds and to hear the dawn chorus at the same time as watching the sunrise is a truly beautiful experience. Birds however do not sing to charm humans. Song birds evolved around 60 million years ago, long before any humans were around to listen. For birds, singing is a means of communicating with the world, and mostly this means 'other birds'.
How do Birds make Noises?
Birds do not have a larynx like we do. Instead they have an organ called a syrinx. The syrinx is located much deeper in the bird's body than our larynx is and for many years scientists had little idea how birds actually made sound. Even today there is a lot we do not know. However, by dint of making birds do lots of unnatural things, like sing with fibre-optic scopes down their throats, sing in a helium oxygen atmosphere or sing with their beaks held open, while watching them with infra-red and x-ray cameras scientists have learned a little about how this amazing instrument works.
A bird's syrinx is a double instrument that sits deep in a bird's chest at the point where the trachea divides into two bronchi. A part of it rests in each bronchi and each of these halves is capable of making sound. This means that a bird can sing two different notes at the same time, or even sing a duet with itself.

Bird Sounds - Songs and Calls
While bird watching is enjoyable, learning the songs and calls of birds adds an exciting dimension to it. Being able to identify unseen birds from a distance, when they are hidden in the bush or a wooded habitat, by listening to their songs and calls is very satisfying. Many people do what is called spishing, where they make a (spis) sound with their lips. Another technique is kissing the back of your hand to make a squeaking sound. Some songbirds such as chickadees and warblers will come to check out the sound. A Bit of History

The first record of bird song recording was by Ludwig Koch in 1889. At the time Ludwig was eight years old. He recorded the Indian Shama, a member of the Thrush family. Many years later after Dr. Koch moved to Britain from Germany he worked with E.M Nicholson. E.M Nicholson became the director of the Nature Conservancy creating the book “Songs of Wild Birds.
Dr. Koch’s sound recordings became the base for the BBC’s natural history library. As you can imagine the recording equipment at that time was very cumbersome.
