Bird songs and sounds in Knutsford Northwest England
http://www.10x50.com/sounds.htm
The addition of a counter to this page revealed quite a few visitors to this part of the Knutsford Ornithological Society website! Initially (1995) it was an exercise in the production of .wav and .ra sound files for inclusion on a website so others could download them to their own computer. Encouraged by the number of visitors I'll perhaps try and add a few other examples of the songs and calls of British birds in the months to come.
For most of these sounds two types of file are available (now three - some newer files will be in MP3 format)
. wav file - slightly better quality than Real Audio, but larger and will therefore take longer to download. No special player required, your system will have one installed.
.rm file - this is a Real Audio file, smaller and quicker to load. Requires RealPlayer a simple (relatively) FREE download from the BBC and not only will you be able to listen to these recordings but also explore the cutting edge of technology, with real- time video and 100's of radio stations broadcasting live in RealAudio.

Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs: Eastern Region
audio CD These are sound recordings of 374 birds of eastern North America, to play on your audio cassette player or audio CD player. Most of these songs were recorded by Lang Elliott, a passionate and inspired recordist. For most species, several different sounds are given, with an average of 3-5 different sounds per bird, and about 40 seconds per bird. The sounds are in the same order as the birds in the Stokes Eastern field guide, so it's easy to follow along in the book. The CD version has the useful feature of most species' having separate track numbers, so that they can be instantly accessed. Diane's evaluation: One of the wonderful things about this collection is the accompanying 64-page booklet, which describes each bird's sounds in words. This is a great help to people who find it easy to learn by reading. The booklet also describes the contexts in which the sounds are given, such as "the song of a territorial male," or "begging calls of the young at the nest."

BIRD SOUNDS
With everyday sounds the subconscious catalogs and stores and appreciates them. Repetition in the background is needed to make the sound memory indelible. How often do we really listen to the sounds we hear every day? I have been hearing some new sounds lately and that led me to review some earlier sound memories. Minnesota's winter nights will for me always have a sound of soft, insistent, rampant tinkling. The cold, high pitch of the metallic notes comes from tiny ice crystals, like glass powder, blowing across the surface of the hard-crusted snow banks. The crystals bang into one another and abrade every object that sticks above the snow, including your face and clothes. It is endless little xylophonic notes; it is cold; it is Minnesota winter. The hills of Extremadura in daylight will always have for me a bright, bell sound. The bells are tied to necks of unseen sheep browsing through the dense brush and short trees of the hillside chaparral. We come upon our destination, a riveting sight: three hundred big messy stick nests on a cliff face at Penafalcon, each occupied by a Griffon Vulture with a six foot wing-span. The sun is glaring, the birds glide in and out of the canyon landing on the nests, the air seems to only move with the effort of the birds' wings. And around it all is the sound of the distant tinkling bells, as if the oaks and cistus scrub had voice. The unseen sheep remain to this day an article of faith. Their bells are concrete.

Vocal Communication in Birds
It's early morning and you're out taking a walk. Every now and then you see birds, and their sounds fill the air. Do you wonder which birds are making which sounds? Or what they are saying to each other?
Listening to birds is a fascinating way to learn about animal communication. And identifying birds by ear is an indispensable birding skill. Many people enjoy learning the songs of birds in their backyard. Expert birders go even farther, collecting a mental library of bird songs and using sounds to lead them to more sightings. (Legendary birder Ted Parker could identify more than 4,000 species by ear.) Researchers study sounds in detail, trying to understand howand whybirds developed their effusive communication skills. Learn more on our bird sounds pages:
Why do birds sing? and Why do they call?
Birds communicate for many reasons, including to
  • impress and attract a mate
declare territorial boundaries identify family members announce the presence of a predator convey information about food
Most birds draw on a repertoire, or variety of sounds, to convey these meanings. Typical sounds fall into two main groups: relatively long and elaborate
