?Red-necked Spurfowl (Francolinus afer), call in distance
Recorded at Speke Bay Lodge in morning, 9-4-2007
African Firefinch dawn song
This clip of the dawn song of African Firefinch was recorded in mixed woodland (Acacia/Commiphora/Combretum/Brachystegia) with a thick understory of Lantana bushes and Hyperhenia grasses at Kigwambimbi, Iringa on 22 April 2008. It was originally (miss) identified as Jameson's Firefinch as this is the only species that had been recorded at this locality over the past 10 years. However, this year it was pointed out to me by Jeff DaCosta that African FF was also present. As the habitat thickens and woodland regenerates at Kigwembimbi, it would appear that African FF is replacing Jameson's FF.

Bird Sounds
August 21, 2010 By Janice VanCleave Whistling is the act of producing a musical sound by holding your lips and tongue in a certain way as you force air out of your mouth. Yes! I know that this sounds a bit vague, and hope someone will send me a better definition. Whistling is something that never mastered. I can make a few pathetic sounds, but they fall very short of being musical. I envy you if you can  can whistle a tune or mimic different bird sounds.
Bird Syrinx
Like you, a bird can inhale air through it nose and/or mouth. The air travels through their wind pipe (the trachea syrinx. Some birds have wonderful control over their syrinx muscles. For example, the nightingale can sing up to 300 different songs. When you sing, you  stop and breath between notes. Birds also do this but instead of a deep breath, they take very quick mini-breaths so there is no apparent break between notes. While sinking, a canary may take as many as 30 mini-breaths a second. • zSB(3,3) Birders who listen carefully to the birds they observe will quickly learn that there are many different types of bird sounds that have different meanings and uses. Understanding these different sounds and being able to distinguish them is the first step in effective birding by ear and identifying birds based on sound.
    Sounds Birds Make
Birds make a variety of calls, songs and nonverbal sounds with a language as complex as any spoken words.
    • Alarm Calls : These sharp, piercing calls are used to warn other birds of danger, and birds will use them when they feel threatened. Alarm calls are typically short but loud and can carry over great distances. Alarm calls may also be used by aggressive birds to threaten others or while chasing other birds away.
    • Begging Calls : Made by young birds, these plaintive calls are designed to draw attention and may include small peeps, whines and chirps. Begging calls are not usually loud, but can be heard clearly in the vicinity of a nest. Juvenile birds will continue to use these calls even after leaving the nest, and begging bird sounds are frequently accompanied by wing flutters and other motions.
