outgoing Looking for Leks Early on any given spring morning somewhere between the Dakotas and the eastern flanks of the Cascades or the Sierras, where the sagebrush grows high and thick far from highways and houses and oil wells, there will be a clearing where a group of large chicken-like birds with long pointed tails and feathered legs will start to sing and dance Their music, made with air sacs in their puffed up chests, sounds something like the hollow sound made when you purse your mouth and slap your cheeks or the noise made by a loudly burbling water cooler. Their dance isn't much more than a brief strut: a couple quick-steps, wings raised and lowered, tail feathers displayed like a peacock's. Each dance lasts but a few seconds, but the audience of female sage grouse watch with rapt attention, judging each performer with an inscrutable ranking system that produces a single winner an American Idol , if you will. The champion (the "master cock") will mate with most of the judges. The runners-up will watch and wait for another year. People are not invited to these competitions, but with some planning and a little luck it is possible to spy on the dancing sage grouse from a distance at a few well-known "leks" across the country. Leks are the ballroom floor for the sage grouse dances. They are usually open areas adjacent to stands of tall and dense sagebrush. The best known leks have been used by grouse for decades; others may only last a year or two. In any given year at any lek, the grouse may or may not show up.

World Series of Birding 2010 LINKS 2010 Birds by Location 2010 Check List 2010 WSB Photos WSB 2009 ... WSB Official Website Wow!! What a turnaround from last year’s disappointing run. We had a great WSB surpassing our target of 150 birds by 1. We decided not to do the entire state and concentrate on Cape May County and that paid off as we spent a lot less time driving (260 miles vs 600) and more time birding. At the end everyone in the team was happy with our run. The heavy rain and lightning that persisted for a number of hours before the race stopped right before midnight. We arrived at Cedar Swamp Creek at around 11:35pm and when we saw that the Cornell team (The Redheads) was also there, we knew that Bob had picked a good starting point. Soon after midnight a King Rail called and that was followed by Clapper Rail call. We stayed in the area until 1:10am and we ended up with 11 species including American Bittern, Great-horned Owl, Seaside Sparrow, Veery and Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Next stop was Butler Rd where we stayed for 15 minutes but did not add to our count (we heard King Rail and Great-horned Owl). We arrived at Jakes Landing at 2:20am and stayed there through 3:10am. Whip-poor-wills were calling non-stop and we also had Virginia Rail but no Black Rail although we listened for it intently in a number of areas. Sharp-tailed Sparrow was another bird that we had no luck with. Next we arrived at Bellplain State Forest and we had a distant Chuck-will’s-widow along with a Wild Turkey and a Catbird at Thomas Field Rd, Sunset Rd and Long Swamp Rd between 4:10am and 4:50am. We then moved to the BSF main office area at around 5:00am. With daylight came an onslaught of bird calls. We had the local breeders we wanted to get at this area (Acadian Flycatcher, Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Yellow-throated Warbler) as well as Wood Thrush and a number of common birds.

Late November 2002 I traveled as a volunteer to the DRC from Nairobi, Kenya to join a bonobo ( Pan paniscus Field Guide to the Birds of East Africa . It proved that since it covers also Uganda's rainforest species it was of good use in the heart of the Congo, too. For most of the time, bird-watching was done opportunistically. My main work was on the bonobo feeding ecology project on and the conducting of a monthly mammal census of the forest in the study area. Whenever I observed any birds in the forest I would try to ID them as accurately as possible with the guide back in camp. There were also quite a few observations made around the research camp itself. ARRIVING IN KINSHASA - N'DJILI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT The Kinshasa airport is a bit run-down but overall is not too hostile to travellers. Most immigration officers checking passports speak only French. They don't make too much trouble but take some time reading very carefully all the pages in your passport. On the return flight from the interior (which is also operated from this airport) one of the officers, quite fluent in English, hassled a Chinese volunteer of the research project. He kept asking her nonsense questions such as 'So you're coming back from the forest!? You' must have been eating a lot of meat there! Have you brought something for me!?' (all people in towns apparently love bushmeat!). After a Congolese colleague of ours spotted that she is being kept so long for no obvious reason he approached and kindly got her passport back from the immigration officer.
