45. Birding In San Marcos

Birding in San Marcos, Texas
The ponds at Southwest Texas State University, and the headwaters of the San Marcos river at Aquarena Springs
Sites: Area description
  • San Marcos sits at the foot of the Balcones escarpment where the view to the south and east from the highest point in this river city reveals prairie flats all the way to the coast.
    • The opposite view, if you could see forever, would reveal the hills, rivers and lakes to the north and west from San Marcos to Kerrville. This unique geographic setting, dividing birding into east and west, allows convergence of major flyways of migratory birds which stop to feed and rest near the San Marcos River and area ponds. Many species winter here, attracted by the constant temperature of the unique spring-fed river. Brushy thickets, abundant vegetation and tall trees provide a rich diversity for different bird species throughout the year.
    The Great Blue Heron
The Black-crowned night heron and the Belted Kingfisher Directions
Click on corridor map below for reference San Marcos is located between Austin (25 miles) and San Antonio (45 miles) along the IH 35 Corridor. The community was named because of its discovery on St. Mark's day when Spanish explorers arrived at the springs and river. This area had been occupied for centuries by Indians and there is an archeological dig under the dammed river in that portion called Spring Lake.

46. Birdwatching In Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland Tourist Board site with brief details of the best birding locations in each county.
http://www.geographia.com/northern-ireland/ukibrd01.htm
Birdwatching in Northern Ireland Original Official Site of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board O rnithologists from Britain and Western Europe come to study the birds of Northern Ireland every year, and with good reason. The province's position on the western fringes of Europe, and the sheer size of many of the flocks that breed or visit, have made it of particular interest both to the experts and the increasing number of birdwatching visitors who are able to combine their special interest with a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. Huge flocks of ducks, waders and geese come south from Arctic Canada and Greenland and other northern vastnesses to pass mild winters on the Ulster wetlands. In spring and summer large numbers of breeding seabirds feed on the fish-rich waters off the north-west coast. Chough and corncrake have some of their last strongholds in Ireland, but are rare in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is the first landfall for autumn migrating American waders, ducks and gulls blown off course, and there is always the chance for keen-eyed birders to spot rare visitors, especially at coastal sites.

phil jeffrey:: Michigan, June 11-14th 2004
David Speiser and I took a trip to Michigan for Kirtland's Warbler and various boreal species over a long weekend June 11-14th. Trip planning for the northern Lower Peninsula was easy - a simple choice between the Grayling and Mio tours. Since the ABA "Lane" guide to Michigan's Upper Peninsula had not been published, most of the trip planning was based extensively on trip reports from Bob Royse and other online sources (see below). I've got to emphasize that DEET (and possibly a bug hat) are an absolute necessity on a trip like this - mosquitos were aggressive everywhere in the Upper Peninsula and late in the day in boggy areas you could get 50+ mosquitos as close personal friends within 15 seconds of exiting the car.
