Celebrate Black History All Year with Quality Lesson Plans
February is Black History Month. Black History Month is an excellent time to share books, music and other resources that celebrate notable African Americans. While February is a wonderful time to emphasize and celebrate black history, it should not be a time to bottle up black history. Black history should be celebrated all year long!
So as you read these lesson plans, consider where and when they may connect with other lessons you have planned through out the year and use them during a time that they will be a beneficial accompaniment to your other lessons. These plans are written with first through third graders in mind, but can easily be modified for younger or older learners.
Besides timing and consistency, quality of resources is another consideration when planning for

Provide paper, watercolor paints and space for each child to paint. Play one of Dizzy Gillespie's many CDs that are available at your local library, music or bookstore. Let them listen to a song first and then play it again while they paint. Encourage children to paint to the beat. Ask them to consider what "color" a song feels like. Be sure to have them write the title of the song, along with their name and date on their musical masterpiece.
    MOVEMENT:
Along with of course free style dance time, here's list of ideas for movement that can be used with Dizzy Gillespie's music or generalized to any other music.
    Dancer in the Middle:
The group should form a circle. One brave dancer should be given a token, such as a beanbag or shaker, and they go in the middle and dance to the music. When ready, they pass the token to someone in the circle. Although everyone should be encouraged to move, children should have the option to pass the token on if they are not comfortable dancing in the middle.

Lesson Excerpt Oprah Winfrey is one of the most famous people in America. It can be said that no other black person or woman in history has had as much influence and success as Oprah. Born in 1954 in Mississippi, Oprah lived in poverty for the first six years of her life. Her parents were teenagers and were not married, so Oprah was raised mostly by her grandmother, Hattie Mae. Hattie Mae taught Oprah to read before she was three years old. She learned to recite bible verses and was nicknamed, “The Preacher” by members of her grandmother’s church. Oprah also liked to pretend to interview her dolls and the birds that would perch on her grandmother’s fence. Continued...
