  • Meet the "Boards" - Select one or two "boards" per class, all month long. Have each author introduce their "friend" - whoever they selected to feature on their bioboard - to the class. Each presentation should be about 1-2 minutes. (When you present your "friend", pretend you know them. Introduce your friend with warmth and delight. Suggested Grades:
3rd Grade - 4th Grade - 5th Grade - 6th Grade Lesson Procedure Print the reading comprehension passage and questions (see below).
Students should read the passage silently, then answer the questions. Teachers may also use the text as part of a classroom lesson plan. Lesson Excerpt Since 1976, the month of February has been called Black History Month. Before 1976, Negro History Week was observed in February during the week in which the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas falls. Abraham Lincoln was the President of the United States when the slaves were freed in 1862. Frederick Douglas was a slave who later helped lead the fight for freedom. He was a great speaker, writer and advocate of brotherhood for all mankind.
Carter G. Woodson, director of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in the 1970’s, is credited with expanding Negro History Week to a month-long celebration.

The following lesson plans were developed for the Delaware Black History Project. These lesson plans are separated to coincide with each unit.

LESSON PLANS
Prepared by Kevin White
Howard Career Center The following lesson plans were developed for the Delaware Black History Project. These lesson plans are separated to coincide with each unit. They are, by no means, exhaustive. Because each individual who teaches these units has his or her own instructional methods, these lesson plans are to be used as a guide for the instructor. Each plan shares certain commonalities. Students should begin each unit by reading the material prepared by the authors. This serves as an introduction to the topic for the students. Furthermore, students are asked to define key terms and concepts. They are directed to primary source material. They are encouraged to analyze applicable charts, graphs, and maps. Lastly, critical thinking questions are included, along with research topics to be developed. The critical thinking questions are designed to measure the student's mastery of the topic. Although there is no day-to-day format for the implementation of these lesson plans, the various resources and activities presented are conducive to the development of two to three 45-minute class periods.
