Contrary to legend, female black widow spiders rarely devour the male black widow spider after mating. Color: Black, with characteristic red "hourglass" on back Legs: Shape: Round Size: 3/4" length; 3/8" in diameter Antennae: False
      Habits
Black widow spiders spin their webs near ground level. They often build their webs in protected areas, such as in boxes and in firewood.
      Habitat
Black widow spiders are often found around wood piles and gain entry into a structure when firewood is carried into a building. They are also found under eaves, in boxes, and other areas where they are undisturbed.
      Threats
The venom of a black widow spider is a neurotoxin and is used as a defense. Black widow spiders do not bite humans instinctively. The black widow spider bite can cause severe pain. Young children and the elderly are especially susceptible to a severe reaction to a black widow spider bite.
      Prevention
Avoid black widow spider bites by wearing heavy gloves when moving items that have been stored for a long period of time. Spiders often hide in shoes, so check shoes and shake them out before wearing. When spider webs are visible, use caution before putting your hands or feet in that area.

A 'LOST WORLD' BATTLE: sun scorpion caught in the web of a black widow spider (all photos by Dan Johnson, 2004) The region near Lost River, Alberta, Canada, is a semi-arid grassland that allows survival of various arachnids, including sun scorpions and the northern scorpion. Black widow spiders ( Latrodectus hesperus is the main species in the west, including Alberta) are commonly found in small mammal burrows, and between pieces of eroded sandstone and shale. While hiking near Lost River, I found a web of a black widow spider at the top of this hill. Here are some photos that tell the story of a battle. The female black widow spiders tends two egg sacs in a rock fissure at the top of the peak. Black widow spider webs are typically messy, and may at first appear abandoned. The female spider reacts to the threat of a visitor by aggressive movement, and holding web threads with each foot in order to detect movement. In the background, a recently killed prey item is visible: a sun scorpion, genus

  • About Black Widow Spiders Black widows have earned an infamous reputation and with good reason. In 1933, a doctor decided to study the effects of black widow venom personally and his several days of intense pain finally convinced the scientific community that the black widow was truly dangerous. Ever since, people have feared black widows as a genuine monster... What Are the Treatments for Black Widow Spider Bites? The venom of a black widow spider (female) is a potent toxin to the nervous system, but you receive only a small amount of toxin with a spider bite, so you are rarely in danger of dying. However, you may experience a range of symptoms, including severe pain, sweating, headache, itching, salivating, chills and high blood pressure.... Black Widow Spider Bite Symptoms There are approximately 50,000 different species of spider in the world, and few ramp up as much fear as the black widow does, despite the fact that its bite is usually nonlethal. All spiders have fangs and venom. The black widow is no exception. Black Widow Spider Bites in Cats A bite from a black widow spider can severely injure a cat or even kill it. Know how to identify a black widow and how to recognize the symptoms of a bite. Available treatment is limited, so it is best to keep your cat from being bitten.

DAMAGE BIOLOGY EGGS The eggs sacs can be constructed by the females in one to three hours and are approximately 1 cm in diameter. Each female can produce 10 to 20 of these sacs during a lifetime, and each sac may contain 200 to 250 eggs. The eggs hatch within the sac in about two weeks. ADULTS The spiderlings undergo their first molt three to four days thence. In approximately 10 days they emerge from the sac through one to three holes that are about 1 mm in diameter. The spiderlings remain in the nest area for several weeks (135-240 days) where they undergo six to nine molts before reaching maturity. Female black widows can live 850 to 950 days when food is readily available. BEHAVIOR The brown widow spider is the most abundant and is commonly found in urban areas. It may be found indoors; however, favorite outdoor hiding places include the crawl space beneath homes and amongst piles of stored lumber, hollow tile blocks, abandoned vehicles, storage sheds, and stored items on shelves. Within the home, the brown widow may be found beneath tables and desks, behind shutters, in the angles of doors and windows, in the folds of clothing, in shoes, and under objects in dark, little-disturbed areas. The black widow spiders are less common and are generally associated with arid areas (western black widow) and higher elevations (southern black widow). Both can be found in crawl spaces, under rocks, in tiny voids, and in utility ducts.

Spiders are considered a beneficial insect because of their prey to other insects and many people do not consider spider control measures for most spiders. However their are two North American species that are dangerous to humans: Black Widow Spiders and Brown Recluse Spiders , and should consider spider control. Most spiders are harmless, but we do include recommended treatment and products for general spider control at the end of the section.

Spider bites
There are at least 50,000 spider species in the arachnid family. Spiders are defined as having eight jointed legs, no wings, no antennae and only two body sections: the thorax and the abdomen. Spiders spend their entire life span capturing and eating other insects (about 2,000 in a year). Even though spiders do a great deal of good for our environment, spiders are greatly feared by most of the population. Most spiders are killed only because they scare people, not because they are actually dangerous to humans. All spiders have some amount of venom with varying degrees of potency. The fangs of a spider are hollow. The venom is injected through the fangs into the victim (usually an insect). The venom will rapidly paralyze the victim and aid in digestion. Fortunately, most spiders are not dangerous to humans because their fangs are either too short or too fragile to penetrate human skin. Spiders do not attack in herds. Spiders do not lay in wait and attack people. Spiders do not lift the covers at night and crawl into bed to bite people as they are sleeping. Some spiders can jump but they are not intentionally jumping at humans to attack them. A spider generally bites a human because it was scared and bites to defend itself. Spiders generally prefer to live in undisturbed areas such as corners of the house or the eaves or in the garden where they can catch insects in peace.

Black widows are identified by red hourglass markings on the underside of their abdomens. Black widows are shiny black in color. Females are larger than males and can measure up to 10 millimeters in length. These spiders are members of the genus Latrodectus. Black widow spiders favor dark, secluded areas such as crevices and woodpiles. They thrive primarily in temperate zones and are known to live in the American South. They may also be found in locations as remote as Canada.

Illustration of a Black Widow Five species of Latrodectus or "widow" spiders are present in North America. The most common is the southern widow, or Latrodectus mactans , and is found in the American South and Northeast. The Latrodectus Hesperus is more populous in the west and the Latrodectus variolus , or northern widow, is found more commonly in the American Northeast. There are two species that are primarily found in Florida. These are the "red widow" or Latrodectus bishopi and the "brown widow" or Latrodectus geometricus Although black widow spiders are named for the female's propensity to kill the male after mating, this behavior rarely occurs outside of captivity. In laboratories and cages, females and males are kept in extremely close proximity. In natural conditions, males almost always successfully elude females after mating.
