A white cane , the international symbol of blindness ICD H H H ... DiseasesDB Blindness is the condition of lacking visual perception due to physiological or neurological factors. Various scales have been developed to describe the extent of vision loss and define blindness. Total blindness is the complete lack of form and visual light perception and is clinically recorded as NLP, an abbreviation for "no light perception." Blindness is frequently used to describe severe visual impairment with residual vision. Those described as having only light perception have no more sight than the ability to tell light from dark and the general direction of a light source In order to determine which people may need special assistance because of their visual disabilities, various governmental jurisdictions have formulated more complex definitions referred to as legal blindness In North America and most of Europe , legal blindness is defined as visual acuity corrective lenses visual field of less than 20 degrees (the norm being 180 degrees) are also classified as being legally blind. Approximately ten percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision. The rest have some vision, from light perception alone to relatively good acuity.

What are the Causes of Blindness?
There are many causes of blindness. Sometimes blindness can be cured or vision improved with medicines, surgery, and special equipment. Below is a list of different causes of blindness and links to sites about them.
Accidents
One basic cause of blindness can be accidents that injure the eye. Sometimes the eye can be saved and sometimes not with medicines, surgery, etc.. It is very important to do the following to preserve good eyesight:
Do not throw objects in people's faces or at their heads.
Be very careful when using sharp objects such as scissors and knives and point them away from your face.
Wear goggles or protective glasses when asked to such as when working with chemicals, etc..
Cataracts
Cataracts are formed in the lens of the eye which is behind the black dot (pupil) in the middle of the eye. As people get older, the lens of the eye gets cloudy. When people have cataracts it is as if they are looking through a fog. As the cataracts get worse, the fog gets thicker. Although older people more often get cataracts, sometimes kids can have them as well. Your grandparents may get cataracts.
Cataracts can be removed by taking out the lens of the eye with surgery and having an artificial lens put in. People can have their vision return to normal after this surgery.

About This Site
Since early 2002, I have been communicating with Dr. Ken Tittle, who founded Mariposa, a Christian ministry to train people with disabilities to work as peer counselors and to facilitate full inclusion in the church community. Mariposa's work was solely with people with mobility impairments until he contacted me and asked if I would be willing to participate and provide some information about blindness and my experiences as a person who is blind. Dr. Tittle's questions about the impact of blindness are very deep and illustrate my reason for developing this site. Assessing a person's visual functioning is often not at all like assessing a person's muscle function. Many factors affect visual functioning. But the impact of blindness is also about much more than visual functioning. The physical impact of blindness can pose a number of challenges socially, and often people who are blind or visually impaired feel the impact of these problems more deeply than they feel the physical impact of their limitations. I suspect that a comprehensive analysis of the impact of blindness would take volumes. I know that all of the 50 or 60 books I have read barely scratch the surfaceand most leave out some very important elements. Visual impairment affects a person in many ways. It affects the way a person learns about, understands, and moves about in the environment (orientation and mobility); the way he accesses information and communicates his ideas; social relationships; accomplishment of daily tasks; perceptions of others about the blind person; and even the blind person's perceptions of himself. My work on this site is an attempt to dig a bit deeper than that surface that has been scratched. Of course, before digging deeper, we must also scratch the surface; and for that purpose I have also provided some basic information about blindness and common adaptations.

Conditions that Affect Sight in Cats:
    Special Needs Cats Profile
Cats' normal vision is superior to humans, but they are also susceptible to many of the conditions that affect our vision:
    • Cataracts
Cataracts (opacity of the lens),left untreated, can lead to glaucoma. Because they are rarer in cats than dogs, it is important to search out and treat the underlying cause if cataracts are found. Surgery to remove the affected lens is possible in qualified cats, and lens implants are sometimes used to approximate normal vision.
    Glaucoma
Glaucoma (increased pressure within the eye) is one of the most prevalent causes of blindness in cats. It can be treated in early stages with medication to help reduce the intraocular pressure. These treatments may require hospitilization. A recently developed calcium channel blocker may also help to prevent damage to the retina and optic nerve. In advanced cases, surgery may be indicated.
  • Tumors Eye tumors include Iris Melanoma, tumors of the eyelid, and other types of tumors. Removal of the eye is often necessary, but a prosthesis may be inserted to retain the normal appearance of the eye. Secondary Glaucoma may be caused by a tumor.

Causes of blindness and visual impairment
In spite of the progress made in surgical techniques in many countries during the last ten years, cataract (47.9%) remains the leading cause of visual impairment in all areas of the world, except for developed countries. Other main causes of visual impairment in 2002 are glaucoma (12.3%), age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (8.7%), corneal opacities (5.1%), diabetic retinopathy (4.8%), childhood blindness (3.9%), trachoma (3.6%), and onchocerciasis (0.8%). The causes of avoidable visual impairment world wide are all the above except for AMD. In the least-developed countries, and in particular Sub-Saharan Africa, the causes of avoidable blindness are primarily, cataract (50%), glaucoma (15%), corneal opacities (10%), trachoma (6.8%), childhood blindness (5.3%) and onchocerciasis (4%). Looking at the global distribution of avoidable blindness based on the population in each of the WHO regions, we see the following: South East Asian 28%, Western Pacific 26%, African 16.6%, Eastern Mediterranean 10%, the American 9.6%, and European 9.6%.

  • How Blind People Use the Web
Obviously, people who are blind are not able to see things as well as those who are not blind. Although it's true that most blind people do have some degree of vision, for all intents and purposes, one can say that people who are blind do not use their eyes to access the web, because whatever vision they have is not useful enough for this kind of task. This means that a computer monitor and mouse would be much less useful to a person who is blind. It's not that blind people are incapable of moving or clicking a mouse; it's just that they don't know where to move it or when to click it, since they can't see what's on the screen. Just how do blind people use the web then?
