Tennessee Blues and Gospel: From Jug Band to Jubilee

by David Evans and Richard M. Raichelson
Sacred and secular Black music traditions have existed side-by-side in Tennessee since the arrival of large numbers of slaves to Mississippi River lowland plantations in the early 19th century. Although church-oriented music has remained separate from entertainment and work-related musics in performance, meaning and genre, it has influenced and, in turn, been influenced by them over time. Many well-known blues performers have "gone to God," and an equally large number of religious performers are attentive to the style, if not the ideology, of blues.
By far the most important Black secular folk music in Tennessee has been the blues. in the early years of this century, folk blues singers were probably active in every Black community in the state. Memphis was the largest of these and became the place where blues music first gained popularity. W. C. Handy, who led a Black orchestra that played the popular tunes of the day for Anglo- and Afro-American audiences, published his "Memphis Blues" in 1912, following it with many more blues "hits" in the next few years. Beale Street, the main Black business and entertainment street where Handy's publishing company was located, became renowned for its blues music; consequently, Memphis gained the reputation as the "Home of the Blues."

Blues Music
Blues is a vocal and instrumental form of music based on the use of the blue notes. It emerged in African-American communities of the United States from spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The use of blue notes and the prominence of call-and-response patterns in the music and lyrics are indicative of African influence. The blues influenced later American and Western popular music, as it became the roots of jazz, rhythm and blues, and bluegrass. In the 1960s and 1970s, a hybrid form called blues rock developed from the combining of blues with various rock and roll forms. wiki Blues Music
Blue note
In jazz and blues, blue notes are notes sung or played at a lower pitch than those of the major scale for expressive purposes. Typically the alteration is a semitone or less, but this varies among performers. Country blues, in particular, features wide variations from the tonic but still with the blue-note feeling. The blue notes are usually said to be flattened third, flattened fifth, and flattened seventh scale degrees, although they approximate pitches found in African work songs. These blue notes are what turns a major scale into the blues scale. The same transformation of notes transforms the minor scale into the minor blues scale, as heard in songs such as "Why Don't You Do Right?". The blues scale is used in almost all twelve-bar and eight-bar blues, but it is also used in blues ballads and in conventional popular songs with a "blue" feeling, such as Harold Arlen's "Stormy Weather".

Blues Music
The South: Negro Music
Piero Scaruffi While we will never know for sure, it is likely that music originally developed (thousands and thousands of years ago) as a means to coordinate and synchronize collective human movement, such as for hunting or farming. Even today, it comes natural to start singing a rhythmic song to accompany the activity of a group of people, whether hiking in the mountains of building a roof.
Presumably, great singers held an important social status just like shamans or top hunters. Later, as percussion instruments developed to accompany music, individual percussionists may have also emerged. Then new kinds of instruments, not only percussive, emerged that further enabled virtuoso playing.
Sometimes during the evolution of civilizations, "solo music" was invented to admire and appreciate the music of the best singers and instrumentalists. It is likely that, initially, their performances were mainly for the aristocracy and were purely musical. At some point it came natural to merge solo music and solo poetry to entertain the aristocracy (and later the masses) with stories that people were familiar with. During the classic age of Greek theater, these stories became more abstract and metaphorical, and the music became less straightforward. Christianity further bent the purpose of music to sing the praise of the Lord and to call the faithful to prayer. Music, basically, became the vehicle for a message. The message (even when it was an epic) was not just a story, but a whole ideological system.

Online Radio Stations - Blues Music
Blues music is the quintessential form of American music. Coming from the spirituals and work songs sung by African-Americans in the Deep South at the end of the 19th century, blues music conveys powerful emotions of pride, pain and the harsh realities of the world. Without blues music, genres such as jazz, country and rock and roll never would have come into existence and the world would have been robbed of such incredible talents such Robert Johnson, Howlin Wolf, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton. But even though artists such as Robert Cray, Jonny Lang and Keb Mo continue to produce powerful blues tracks, its becoming increasingly difficult to find the blues on the radio
If youre a fan of the blues, your best option is to come to OnlineRadioStations.com. Weve assembled a collection of the best Internet radio stations from around the country and all over the world playing nothing but the best in blues music. The blues comes in a wide variety of styles, and OnlineRadioStations.com has you covered whether you want to hear Delta blues, Chicago blues or contemporary fusions of blues and rock. Best of all, this is entirely free music streaming straight to your computer, meaning you can enjoy some great blues without paying a dime.
