Boa Constrictor Snakes - Natural History
George's Herpetological Home Page
George Knaack Boa Constrictors belong to the family Boidae, which includes 5 genera of boas, 3 genera of sand boas, 8 genera of pythons. Some of the Boa Constrictor species are less than 1 meter; others are the largest snakes in the world. Boa Constrictors are also called "Red-Tail Boas." Pet stores and snake aficionados use this name to detract people's attention from their proper name that can sound threatening. Many, but not all Boa Constrictors are red-tailed. Mostly Boa Constrictors are imported from Brazil, Columbia, Amazon, Guyana, and Surinam. In South America they are kept as house pets to kill rats. Nowadays Boa Constrictors are very popular as house pets.

World Wonders Atlas Wildlife Celebrities ... FAQ BOA CONSTRICTOR The boa constrictor kills its prey by constriction. Once it catches its victim, the snake wraps its body around the prey in coils, tightening its grip each time the victim breathes out. Eventually no longer able to breathe, the prey dies by suffocation. HABITAT The boa constrictor's preferred habitat is rainforest, but it it also found in semiarid savannah. Because its range covers such a large area, the boa constrictor varies considerably in color, marking, and size. On Hog Island, off Central America, the boa constrictor is seldom longer than 3 feet; in most of Central America, it reaches 10 feet, while in Trinidad and Venezuela, it can grow to 20 feet. In the warmer areas, the boa constrictor is active throughout the year. However, in the cooler climes, it may spend long periods of time inactive. BREEDING After fertilization, the eggs remain in the female's body, where they develop over several months inside thin membranes. Unlike its close relative, the python, the boa constrictor gives birth to live fully formed young. The protective membranes rupture as the young are released. As many as sixty snakes are born at one time, each measuring 17-20 inches. The young boa constrictor begins feeding within a week or two after its birth and grows quickly, usually reaching a yard in length after several months. It is sexually mature at 2-3 years when it reaches 6-10 feet.

Boa Care Sheet
by Steve Byrd
Originally published in ARK'Type , the newsletter of the Alberta Reptile Keepers, pp. 18-21, Sept./Oct. 1995.
As reprinted in the Cold Blooded News , Vol.22, No.11, November 1995. The following (assuming you have intelligently made the decision to purchase a Boa constrictor) are basic guidelines for proper care and maintenance of your new pet. Red Tailed Boas (or Boa constrictor constrictor B. c. imperator , and a few others) range from Colombia, Mexico, Central America, and others. It should be noted that "Red Tailed Boa" is a trade name interchanged with just about all the ssp. The true Colombian Red Tailed Boas tend to be rare, and it is speculated by some that the name Red Tailed Boa was coined for its appeal over the constrictor name and the negative image it may imply. SELECTION
If possible, captive bred animals should always by selected. They tend to be much healthier and make better pets overall. This also helps to help encourage breeding rather than collection. Always deal with reputable dealers and high quality pet stores. If the snake must be an import, be very careful when it comes to selection.

North America South America
The boa constrictor belongs to a specialized grouping of reptiles: the first class of vertebrates to evolve to become completely independent of water. Boas still have vestiges of a pair of hind limbs, which are the most striking evidence of a link to their lizard origin. These pelvic remnants are clearly visible and are called anal spurs. Boa constrictors often reach lengths of up to 4 m (13 ft.), and even-longer specimens have been recorded. They can live about 20 to 25 years. Boas are pinkish or tan in colour, with dark crossbands. These snakes become sexually mature in three years. They give birth to live young rather than lay eggs; each snake is born encased in a sac-like membrane, which it must break open soon after. A boa constrictor will birth 15 to 40 young at a time. The boa constrictor is found in the tropics of Central and South America, from Mexico to northern Argentina. It lives in deserts, wet tropical forests, open savannah and cultivated fields. Some boas live in underground holes, while others live in trees.

Introduction to the Boa Constrictor From Lianne McLeod, DVM , former About.com Guide
    See More About:
Boa Constrictor Lianne McLeod zSB(3,3) There are several subspecies of boa constrictor (species name boa constrictor ) that are found in the pet trade. Red tailed boas ( Boa constrictor constrictor ) are commonly found in the pet trade, and Boa constrictor imperator can be found as well, among other less common subspecies. The care for all the species is fairly similar. Before committing to ownership of a boa constrictor, be sure you will be able to handle the size and strength of a full grown snake for the 25-30 years your snake might live. A full grown boa constrictor (red tailed) will reach 8-10 feet long and weigh up to 50 pounds. These are very muscular and thick bodied snake. While generally quite docile in temperament, it is important to respect the inherent strength of these animals and that could inflict serious injury to a person. As a general rule, for a constricting snake over 6-8 feet it is a good idea to have a second person present while handling the snake, just in case assistance is required. Keep in mind also that large, secure housing is required for these snakes, and as adults need large prey such as large rats or even rabbits.
