The 411 on Boa Constrictors Boa constrictors have become highly popular nowadays as pets; however, how much about them do you actually know? Here are the most important facts about boa constrictors that you really need to know: - The difference between common boa constrictors and red-tailed boa constrictors Common boa constrictors are medium to large in size and come from Central America, while red-tailed boa constrictors happen to be slightly bigger. Although their markings are similar, the latter has deeper red colorations on its tail. Both of these species are common pets nowadays; however, real red-tailed boa constrictors are more wanted, in general, making them much more expensive in the pet market. The size of boa constrictors Several boa constrictors can grow up to twelve feet long, while other species like rosy boa constrictors can only grow up to twenty inches long in their adult form. The most common species of boa constrictors can grow up to nine feet long in their adult form, with males being around a foot shorter compared to their female counterparts. The food that boa constrictors eat Boa constrictors are strictly carnivorous. They consume selected rodents and mammals, lizards and birds. In captivity, you can exclusively feed them rodents like rats, mice, rats, and rabbits for bigger specimens. The majority of captive snakes get fed defrosted prey.

Red-Tail Boa Care
Take a moment....
There has been a disturbing increase over the past year or so (1996 to present) of boas being dumped by their owners (many of whom tried to sell the 6+ foot boa only to find that, no matter how much they reduced their price, no one was interested in buying) on animal shelters and reptile rescues. Many of these snakes are in terrible condition, with respiratory infections, riddled with endo- and ectoparasites, many suffering severe injury and infection from untreated rat bites and thermal burns. This is a clear indication that many people who are buying boas shouldn't be. Take another moment...
....and read about inclusion body disease , a virus that affects only boas and pythons and that has become increasingly widespread as stores and too many breeders and dealers fail to take proper precautions when integrating new stock. It is always fatal to pythons and generally fatal to boas. If you have a boa or python and are considering buying another one, quarantine it for at least 6 months! By this I mean strict quarantine. Follow proper cleaning routines when doing maintenance with your quarantine animals - you can read about it in my article on cleaning and disinfecting . If you think you are safe because you are buying from a reputable shop or breeder, think again. Read about

Red-tail Boa Constrictor ( Boa constrictor constrictor Paul Whitten The red-tail boa is distributed from the Amazonian forests of Colombia to northern Argentina. It is very polymorphic and reaches an average size of six and a half to ten feet. The disposition of the red-tail boa and its beautiful coloration has made it a popular species in the pet trade and it is regularly bred in captivity Captive red-tail boas most commonly mate from November to February and give birth in July or August. In the wild however, this varies quite a bit according to region. Boa constrictors give birth to live young as do 30% of the world’s snakes. Gestation is from four to eight months. Neonate red-tails are about one foot long when they are born and their first meals consist of small warm blooded animals such as mice or young birds. Red-tail boas are one of many species of snakes that use the method of constriction to kill their prey. Within seconds after seizing its prey with its needle sharp curved teeth, the boa quickly wraps a portion of its body around the animal. Each time the prey exhales, the coils of the snake tighten putting pressure on the circulatory system and preventing expansion of the lungs. In a short time the animal dies from asphyxiation. Like other snakes the red-tail boa is able to swallow food items that are much larger than its own head. This is because the bones of the lower jaw are not attached to the skull. The elasticity of the skin, ligaments, and muscle allow the snake’s mouth to stretch around a large prey animal as the jaws alternate

Boa Constrictor, Constrictor Gary Ruplinger The Latin name, Boa constrictor constrictor, refers to a snake commonly kept as a pet. The name "red-tailed boa" is sometimes given to the same snake, although there is a true red tailed boa. These snakes originate in Mexico and South America. Another species from Honduras is a smaller snake, not getting more than three feet long. The Boa C. constrictor, however, can get quite large, although not as large as some reports indicate. Ten feet is a common adult length, but longer snakes, even up to fifteen feet long, are seen. A large boa constrictor can be dangerous so it is very important that you treat them with respect. It is also important that you follow proper precautions when feeding or handling these pets. A newborn is likely to be only 14 to 22 inches long. It can get by on one mouse every week. The size of the mouse should equal the girth of the snake. As they get a little older, they might need two mice every week. After they pass three feet in length, they are probably ready for a rat of appropriate size when feeding. Beyond six feet long, they can handle a rabbit, but should only be fed every ten to fourteen days.

Species: Boa Constrictor Foound from Argentina to Mexico, the boa constrictor ( photo ) lives near water, but can also live in deserts, wet tropical forests, open savanna, and cultivated fields, and from sea level to moderate elevation. Boa constrictors are both terrestrial and arboreal. These snakes are solitary and nocturnal. Like all snakes, they are cold-blooded and their body temperature adapts to the external temperature. Boa constrictors are pinkish or tan in color, with dark crossbands. The varying patterns of cream, brown, tan, gray, and black with ovals and diamonds offere effective coloration. Sensors on the tongue detect odors while those on the upper lip detect heat, or warm blooded prey. Boas are not poisonous. They kill by constricting the prey until it can no longer breathe. Like all snakes, they swallow the prey whole, head first. The boa's top and bottom jaws are attached to each other with stretchy ligaments, which let the snake swallow animals wider than itself. Snakes don't chew their food, they digest it with very strong acids in the snake's stomach.

Detroit Blues With A Detroit Attitude
The Boa Constrictors are a hand-assembled band of Detroit's very best musicians. All of the members came from the cores of many of the very best Blues bands that Detroit has to offer.
The Boa Constrictors are a Detroit Blues band with a true Detroit pedigree. When you come to a Boa Constrictors show, you are hearing PURE Detroit Blues with a PURE Detroit attitude
Members of the Boa Constrictors have been fortunate to share the stage and to open shows for Luther Allison, Junior Wells, Sugar Blue, Charlie Musselwhite, Jason Ricci and New Blood, and the legendary Motown session-band, the Funk Brothers, as well as acting as backing musicians for ex-Fleetwood Mac guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Jeremy Spencer.
Detroit Blues has it's own distinctive style. It is very greasy, grimy, and lowdown. It's industrial sound evolved from Delta Blues with the northern migration for factory jobs during Detroit's industrial revolution. It's birthplaces and homes were Paradise Valley and Hastings Street.
Our main course recipe comes from the harmonica bands of Little Walter, Jerry Portnoy, Junior Wells, Paul Butterfield, and Sonny Boy Williamson (1 and 2). We also throw in a dash of Rockabilly for flavor.
