The Basic Facts You Need To Know
The boa constrictor is a non-venomous, constricting (you'd never guess, huh?) snake. There are many different sub-species but the one most commonly seen on the market, and the one best advised for beginners, is the BCI ( boa constrictor imperator ), also known as the common boa constrictor. For more information on sub-species see www.boa-contrictors.com.
Before you consider getting this snake, bare in mind that you are looking at a pet that can grow up to 10ft long and live over 20 years. Not only will it need a large enclosure that will take up a considerable amount of your space but it also needs a specific environment that you will need to maintain for the rest of its life. There are also the vet bills to consider (is there a reptile vet near you?) and you are going to have to feed your snake dead rodents several times a month.
Boa constrictors won't eat salad, so if you can't handle this and/or don't have the time, space or money to house this reptile then please think again.
Enclosure Size and Type
Size
For boa constrictors the appropriate enclosure size can be worked out as such: total length of snake = length of vivarium + width of vivarium.

Why Study This Topic?
What I want to find out is the Boa Constrictor's habitat; it's length, ability, strength, and how dangerous it is. I want to know if it is easy for them to find food, and if it is, what do they eat? Why do I want to know this? I'll tell you. I think snakes are interesting, even if I think they're scary. Boa Constrictors sound amazing, and that's why I'd enjoy studying them.
What Was Already Known
I already knew Boa Constrictors were dangerous. I knew they could wrap themselves around animals and suffocate them. They are likely to crush one's bones by doing this. Boa Costrictors are endangered probably because humans are scared of them and want to get rid of them. I know that Boa Constrictors are able to grow to be heavy snakes. These are snakes you don't want to meet up with in the wild.
Search for Information
On the internet, I learned that Boa Constrictors are typically grey or silver with a series of brown or deep red saddles along their back. They are found in the warmest parts of the Americas, from Mexico to Argentina, and can reach lengths up to eighteen feet. Boas feed on birds, reptiles, and mammals. A Boa Constrictor will sieze its prey with his mouth, swiftly coil around it, and tighten its grip so that the victim can not expand its chest to breathe. Then, he will eat the victim.

CALZOO'S REFERENCE SHEET > Boa Constrictors Latin name Boa constrictor Maximum length 6 - 8 feet (approx) Native to Colombia Approximate life span 20+ years GENERAL INFORMATION
This is one of the most popular pet snakes due to their great temperament and beautiful markings. All the baby boas sold by California Zoological Supply are captive or farm bred. The baby season starts in January and ends around June. Boas are arboreal (tree climbing) snakes, so provide lots of climbing branches so they can move about. They are also nocturnal (active at night) so you will more than likely not see them move much during the day. These are great animals for anyone who wants something impressive and of a nice size but one that doesn't get too large. Albino Boa Constrictors are also slowly showing up on the market. The price is still prohibitive for most hobbyists, but should decrease in a few years.
ENCLOSURE
The enclosure should be no shorter than ½ the snakes body length. Baby Boas can live in a 20-gallon aquarium for up to a year but be prepared to get a larger enclosure later on. Boas are notorious escape artists so your enclosure can never be too secure. To avoid respiratory infections, the enclosure should provide plenty of ventilation. A secure hiding place is also important.
SUBSTRATE
As a substrate you can use Zoo Med REPTI-BARK™, Zoo Med CAGE CARPET or pine shavings. But DO NOT, under any circumstances, use cedar shavings! Its oils are toxic to reptiles. The substrate should remain dry.

Common Name: Boa Constrictor
Latin name: Boa Constrictor
Native to: Mexico through South America, including the surrounding islands.
Size: Boa constrictors are a large snake, reaching lengths of 8 to 12 feet and weighing up to 30 to 60 pounds. Females tend to be larger than males.
Life span: If properly cared for boa constrictors usually live 20 to 30 years.
General appearance: Due to the vast variety of subspecies and different genetic morphs, exact description is difficult. Generally boas exhibit saddle like patterns running the length of the body to a red tail. Coloration can vary from grays to browns with younger snakes being lighter in color than adults.
Housing requirements: Enclosure: Hatchling boa constrictors can be housed in a 20-gallon aquarium, but they will soon out grow this enclosure. Usually only custom-built cages are the only suitable enclosures for adult specimens. Cages should at a minimum be 8 feet long by 2 to 3 feet wide by 4 feet tall. When constructing cages it is important to not use unfinished wood or other porous materials since these are difficult to clean and can harbor disease.
Temperature: Daytime temperatures should be 80° to 85° F with a basking temperature of 95° F. Night time temperatures should be 75° to 80° F.
