Bonds can be a wise investment for your portfolio, but as with any investment, you need to know what you’re getting yourself into. For that very reason, here’s a simple primer on bonds:
Q: Why would I want to invest in bonds?
A: In a nutshell, security. Bonds can give you a level of security, because typically, there is a steady stream of payments and repayment of principal. You can predict a level of dependable income with bonds that can provide more stability to your portfolio.
Q: Where does this security for bonds come from?
A: Unless an issuer defaults, your bond will be redeemed at par if you hold it until its maturity date. Its value does not depend on current interest rates. It’s a hedge against disaster.
Q: How much money do I need to invest in bonds?
A: As little as $1000 is all you need to invest in bonds. Generally, though, because of the security, most bonds are sold in $5000 increments.

August 20, 2010 Source: Wall Street Journal - March 14, 2000 Siegel compares 1999 stock prices with 2010 bonds Unlike a lot of economists, Jeremy Siegel, Professor at the Wharton School of Business, is not bashful about making contrarian calls (see other Siegel article ). Just days after the Nasdaq index peaked 10 years ago at a level above 5,000 (below 2,200 today), Siegel called the large capitalization technology market a “Sucker’s Bet” in a Wall Street Journal article dated March 14, 2000. Investors were smitten with large-cap technology stocks at the time, paying balloon-like P/E (Price-Earnings) ratios in excess of 100 times trailing earnings (see table above). Bubblicious Boom Today, Siegel has now switched his focus from overpriced tech-stock bubbles to “Bubblicious” bonds, which may burst at any moment. Bolstering his view of the current “Great American Bond Bubble” is the fact that average investors are wheelbarrowing money into bond funds. Siegel highlights recent Investment Company Institute data to make his point: “From January 2008 through June 2010, outflows from equity funds totaled $232 billion while bond funds have seen a massive $559 billion of inflows.”

Can I give someone a percentage of my income (suppose we are talking royalties from a book I am writing or something else involved in creative arts) for a specified period of time in exchange for a sum of money. Are there any key words that would assist my research on this subject. Thank you.

    Bonds
One of the most well-known strategies for investors to make money is through bond investments. These can be defined simply as loans where the bond buyer or lender lends a certain amount of money to the bond issuer or borrower. Bonds work through interest payments done at a pre-determined amount of time. Once the payment is complete, the principal or the money that was initially borrowed will be paid back to the original investor.
    What Is A Bond Investment?
A "bond" is a term commonly used for debt issues that have repayment periods for more than ten years. If the repayment period is less than ten years but more than one year, this is more properly called a "note". However, if the repayment period is less than one year, this can be referred to as a "bill". Bond investments are typically issued similarly as stocks. Investment banks buy bond offerings and re-sell them to investors. If you are referring to government bonds, these are generally auctioned off. There are several reasons why investment companies issue bonds. The primary reason is to raise funds. Though they have the option of issuing stocks, an advantage companies can experience with bonds is that control of the company or any profits gained won't be lost.

Two words come to mind following the historic action on wall street this past week. The first is oversold, and the latter is bargains. Two such examples are Ebay $16.73 (EBAY), and Adobe $27.12 (ADBE) as of close on Friday October 10, 2008. These two companies are prime examples of across the board slashing experienced on wall street. Neither of the aforementioned companies are credit dependent. In other words, they don't need credit to operate, and their consumers don't need credit to buy their products which is the core problem in the economy. In many ways, these two companies are immune from the current credit dilemma.

    Bonds Investing
Jul 22nd, 2010 by TypesOfInvestment Bonds and stocks are similar in that they both provide a way for people to invest money.  However, both bonds and stocks also have features and characteristics that make them distinct.  The primary difference between the two is that stocks rely on current market conditions.  Therefore, if the market were to fluctuate in either direction, stocks would follow by going up or down.  On the other hand, bonds do not depend on market movement and because of this they are a safer way to invest.  Unfortunately, the level of return on financial investment would generally be less with bonds. Although people have been involved with bond investing for many years, today’s economy has prompted a growing number of people to invest money this way.  The best way to understand how bond investing works is to look at bonds as a type of loan coming from the government, a business, or perhaps a city.  When a bond is purchased, you are lending money to the organization or entity from which the bond was purchased. In exchange for this arrangement, the organization or entity formally agrees to pay a fixed interest rate to you that would be spread over a set time frame.  Once the bond reaches the established maturity date, you would receive the value of the bond, as well as the agreed upon interest.  If handled properly, bond investing can be an excellent way to make money but it is important to realize this is not a short-term return on investment but something that takes years.

Bonds - Investing in Bonds for A Secured Future
There may have been more than one occasion when you might have had to borrow money from a friend: at the coffee shop, in the office, or even for the cab service. When you run out of money, borrowing is usually your only way out. Juxtaposing the same with big corporations and the federal government, one would find it is not that easy for them. Not only have they to repay the money owed, but to top that amount with interest. That is why companies are made to sign a ''bond'' by law, promising the repayment of the money owed. It is a formal kind of security to ensure due payment.
However, certain criteria ought to be considered before investing in a bond. Let us take a short tour through how investing in a bond could benefit you.
    Before Investing
The working of a bond primarily depends on whether you need to invest money for a long or short term. Besides, it also depends on your tax status, the period and investment goals. There are some basic strategies on hand, which should be considered before making any investments. For instance, putting all your assets and risks in one single asset class would not be a good idea. It is better to diversify the risks by creating a portfolio of several bonds within the bond. By choosing different issuer''s bonds, you could protect yourself from the possibility that one of the issuer''s may not be able to pay back the amount owed.
