The word bonsai is Japanese and it means “potted plant.” Mention of the word bonsai brings Japan to mind for most of us. Indeed, the Japanese people have been cultivating bonsai trees since the ninth century. The country of Japan is actually a collection of very small islands, more than 1,500 of them. On these tiny islands, there isn’t room for much of anything that is of enormous size. This compactness of available space is believed to be one reason bonsai gardening plant cultivation is so widespread in Japan. In spite of the way most people associate bonsai and Japan, it was actually the Chinese who shared their Growing bonsai secrets with the Japanese more than 1,000 years ago. European hornbeam bonsai Imperial China shared its secrets of pen-zai (potted plant) and pen-jing (tray scenery) with Japanese travelers who then honed the Chinese techniques to new levels of aesthetics and skill. Bonsai trees Mastery - Different styles in Bonsai Gardening
Do you know there are dozens of Bonsai styles? Knowing about different Bonsai trees will add to your experience.
Enlarge Image We all know about the basic Bonsai gardening, but that's just the beginning. To really own a masterpiece Bonsai, one must require good styling skills. Styling in Bonsai trees can be broadly categorized according to the number of trunks they the tree has. This can be divided to single trunk and multiple trunks.
    Single trunk styling
The single trunk styling in Bonsai can be further classified into four types namely, Formal upright, Slanting, Cascade, and Twisted style.
    Formal upright bonsai gardening
The formal upright style is also called the Chokkan style. This style is adopted only by the experienced Bonsai artists. If you are a beginner you are advised not to go for this style. The Chokkan style is considered as the most complex style of Bonsai trees. Tachiki, Hokidachi, Sabamiki, Saramiki, Sekijoju, Ishitsuki, and Neagari are some the sub categories in the Chokkan style.
    Bonsai gardening style for beginners
The slanting style called the Shakan style is more common for the beginners to use. In the slanting style all the branches can come to one side of the trunk (windswept style) or a few branches will come out of the top while the main trunk is long.

Introduction to the Art of Bonsai Gardening
You will need to have extreme care and patience to grow your own bonsai since these are the full species grown in a very small pot. You will need to be very specific and careful with the soil type and temperature, which you will need to maintain at a certain level. Pruning alone can take years to master and the plant has to be at a certain temperament to handle the pruning effectively. In addition, potting and re-potting are very complex and advanced techniques to master. Watering might seem like the simplest task, but in the world of bonsai, this too becomes very complicated and precise. You will have to confront this complex science head-on to succeed with bonsai. If you have too much water, your bonsai will be water-logged, drowning in its own roots, developing fungi and root rot. On the other hand, if you have too little water, your soil will become dry, the leaves will wilt and the tree will die. Soil and potting techniques overlap with the watering needs of your plant since the drainage is a critical element. Your pruning technique will intermingle with your shaping technique because it will be affected by the soil maintenance, watering and look that you want with your bonsai tree or plant.
