Bonsai gardening is the art or hobby of developing and growing trees or shrubs that are dwarfed by pruning the roots and branches, and are grown in a pot or other container.

Bonsai Tree Gardening
ultivating bonsai trees has been a Japanese tradition for hundreds and hundreds of years. Literally translating to “tray planting,” cultivating a bonsai tree involves actively working to shape a tree into a dwarfed, artistic version of itself. Bonsai trees are not special hybrids or dwarf species of common trees; they’re genetically the same as their taller brothers and sisters. It’s the careful cultivation that keeps these trees small. However, the trees are not sick or damaged. In fact, given the proper care, the dwarfed version of a tree can live longer than the same tree if it was allowed to grow in the wild.
Growing Bonsai Trees
Bonsai trees can either be grown from seeds or from cuttings of trees, and they usually range in height from two inches to three feet. They are kept small through pruning both branches and roots. They’re also repotted periodically, and new growth is often pinched off. Cultivating bonsai trees is actually as much about art as it is about horticulture. Bonsai trees are not only kept small, they are also formed into pleasing shapes. They often follow a number of different growth patterns, from simple triangles to waterfall shapes cascading down over their pots. The shapes are usually a product of both the pruning of the tree and through the use of wrapping the trunk and branches with wire, pushing the tree into its desired shape. The pots themselves are part of the art as well, chosen to compliment the shape and color of the tree itself. Mosses and rocks are often added to the base for aesthetic appeal.

Discover The Roots Of Bonsai Gardening
Learn the history of the art of bonsai and become familiar with some of the different styles and techniques. The word Bonsai can be translated literally into "container planted", and is used to describe the art of aesthetic miniaturization of trees that is achieved by growing them in small containers. Western culture uses "bonsai" as an umbrella term to combine the Japanese "bonsai" form, the Chinese "penjing" form and the Korean "bunjae" form of miniaturized tree cultivation. Either way you look at it, bonsai gardening is a popular pastime and has been for centuries.
The Chinese appear to have been the first to miniaturize trees around the year 200 AD. Though it is not certain, it is speculated that the art form has been derived from healers who transported medicinal plants in small containers. The early focus of this art form involved displaying stylized trunks by shaping them into mystic and animal figures. The practice spread to Japan from China during the Heian and Tokugawa periods, which is when landscape gardening began to gain importance and cultivating azalea and maple plants became a treasured pastime for the wealthy. The container plants of this time were inappropriately large, until the Meiji period where the term "bonsai" was coined, and dwarf potted trees, or "hachi-no-ki" became popular.
There are two main aesthetic schools of Bonsai gardening, the Japanese and the Chinese. The Japanese aesthetic centers around the phrase "heaven and earth in one container", which combines truth, essence and beauty, which is known as shin-zen-bi, together to create a good bonsai. In the Japanese school of Bonsai, the plant should always look natural and never show that human hands intervened in any way, which is meant to evoke the essential spirit of whichever plant is being used. In the Chinese aesthetic, the essence and spirit of nature are supposed to be captured through the use of contrast. The Chinese bonsai is influenced by Taoism, especially the Yin and Yang. Inspiration also comes from poetry and visual art.

Bonsai Gardening
What's It All About? by Guy Starbuck
Guy Starbuck introduces us to Bonsai Gardening and some of the gardening techniques we will need to grow a healthy and successful plant. We are pleased to bring you a very good Bonsai Gardening for beginners article. Enjoy. Bonsai is a Japanese art form which has been handed down over the years and it can be translated to mean "tray garden". It is an art that focuses on growing trees in small pots or trays and then pruning the branches and the roots. This way you train the plant to grow the way that you want it too look. A bonsai plant will end up looking like an old looking tree in a miniature shape. Bonsai plants have to be taken care of properly and if they are they live to be older than larger scale versions of the same species of plants. Bonsai plants aren't naturally small and they are trained to achieve this appearance. After Bonsai training training, they tend to look like dwarfs. Their height ranges from as small as 2 inches up to 3.33 feet. These plants include those who have already been trained by a real bonsai artist or the untrained starter plant that needs little or no training. It is essential that you find the species that you have bought so that you can find out the particular care that they require in terms of watering, pruning and re-potting.

Bonsai Gardening A Short Introduction
Bonsai gardening is certainly one of the most unique and beautiful forms of art in existence. Since its early beginning in ancient China to present day, it has developed into many striking individual styles. Once miniaturized, however, maintaining the look and well-being of the bonsai requires a bit of care and attention on the part of the gardener. Brief History of Bonsai Bonsai gardening is the ancient art form of literally miniaturizing trees. Their trunks are straight, like those of the formal upright style, but lean at a slant from the surface of the soil. Cascade style bonsai are intentionally groomed to resemble trees that can be found on the sides of mountains. Literati bonsai were inspired by ancient brush paintings of trees that grew in inhospitable climates. They therefore have few branches. What branches they do have are generally clustered at the top of the trunk, which is usually contorted. Forest style bonsai are relatively self explanatory. They are comprised of several trees planted together in odd numbers. This type of bonsai gardening is intended to mimic the diversity of age and height that you would find in nature. In the root-over-rock style, the roots of the bonsai are wrapped around a rock at the base of the tree. Caring for Bonsai An important part of bonsai gardening is knowing how to care for your bonsai. Watering is not done as you would typically water your average houseplant. Bonsai trees require immersing the entire pot or tray in water for several minutes. Once taken out of the water, allow the bonsai to drain. During the summer, bonsai need to be watered daily, and every other day during the cooler months.

BONSAI GARDENING
Bonsai Gardening and Bonsai Tree Garden
Gardening is an essential part of the bonsai plant. In order to get the bonsai tree growing in a specific aesthetic pattern, gardening is an indispensable aspect. A bonsai tree gets a fine shape and size, an art, a glow and a photogenic personality after the Bonsai tree is trimmed and taken care of through proper gardening. In case proper care and gardening is not given to the bonsai plant, it will appear like any other tree and will not have a distinguished name. Gardening has some important aspects: sunlight, pruning and watering. These three elements of gardening can make or break a bonsai dream. They help the plant to keep healthy and sturdy. Watering
Watering plays the most important role in bonsai gardening. Watering is important as it helps the plant to keep healthy and fit. Water is an indispensable element for any plant. Watering is an essential and a basic need for the bonsai tree and needs t be given prime importance. An outdoor bonsai tree may need more watering in order to prevent drying away. However, when there are signs of the soil drying away around the pot, watering needs to be done immediately for the bonsai tree. You must not wait for the whole soil to dry out. Watering as a part of gardening assumes an important role in maintaining a proper check of over and under watering. Over watering can seriously harm the plant by choking the roots that take in oxygen for respiration. At the same time under watering can kill the plant.

The Art Of Bonsai
The Art Of Bonsai Gardening Today
Comments (0) By Bonsai Gardening , November 13, 2010 8:51 pm People that are not yet completely familiar with the art and horticulture of bonsai suppose that bonsai trees and plants must be grown indoors. This belief may be because all bonsai trees and plants are planted in small pots rather than planted in the garden, or perhaps they saw their first bonsai at an indoor garden show. indoor bonsai tree , while others are more suited to be grown outdoors. The trees and plants that are generally considered to be indoor bonsai are those that are native to tropical and subtropical climates, and they are being grown as bonsai in a more temperate climate. If you want your indoor bonsai trees and plants to thrive then you must be sure to keep them in a warm and humid environment, similar to that environment where they come from. Providing the appropriate levels of humidity is usually the largest challenge for the indoor bonsai gardener. One easy way to keep the humidity levels up for your indoor bonsai is to spray it frequently with a mister. The methods of pruning and training indoor bonsai is much the same as with outdoor bonsai, with the exception being the timing of the training and pruning. Pruning, cutting, grafting and other training methods are usually only done during preiods of growth and dormancy on outdoor bonsai plants. Indoor bonsai often have a continuous growing period, although they tend to be more active in the spring and summer.
