Each bonsai tool performs a specific task related to the shaping and training of bonsai trees. The sheer number of bonsai tools available makes it difficult to decide which ones to purchase. Luckily, bonsai gardeners need only a few key tools to get started.
  • Shears
  • Bonsai enthusiasts utilize different types of shears (or scissors) for controlling the growth of tree specimens. Specialized shears come in a range of sizes. Large shears allow the user to prune thick branches from the bonsai, but cannot manage delicate shaping work. Small bud scissors fit into tight spaces to trim delicate growth like leaves and buds.
  • Concave Pruner
  • The concave pruner performs an essential function for the bonsai cultivator. This pruner removes branches by creating a depression wound on the trunk or branch of the bonsai. The elongated cut of the concave pruner ensures rapid healing and minimal scarring.

    The Basics of Bonsai Gardening
Bonsai trees may look serene and very peaceful to you but they take a lot of time and effort to grow and cultivate. Bonsai gardening is an art form that has been around for several centuries. It originated in Asia and made its way around the world. Beginners in the art of bonsai gardening need to learn a lot before they can really perfect cultivating a bonsai tree. It takes a lot of patience to cultivate a bonsai tree. Choice of Trees Japanese Snowdrop is one of the most recommended novice trees for bonsai gardening. It is hardy and grows extremely well outdoors under the full sun. Maintenance is easy as long as you water it well and make sure that the ball root system does not ever dry out completely. This bonsai tree will need yearly pruning as well as constant monitoring of the roots. The Japanese Pagoda tree is another tree that is great to work with for beginners to bonsai gardening. It is relatively easy to maintain and grow and also flowers beautifully in season. This bonsai tree will appreciate full sun with some partial shade as well as keeping the roots damp most of the time. It does not like it too hot or dry. Bonsai gardening requires that the ball root system not be allowed to dry up completely. Tips and Tricks for Bonsai Gardening You need to bear in mind that not all species of indoor bonsai trees have the same preferences for watering and sun exposure. Make sure you are aware of the needs of your specific bonsai plant to be successful in bonsai gardening. In bonsai gardening, some trees need to be repotted regularly at least every one to three years. This helps to maintain the roots and keep them free from pests and other threats to their root system.

Bonsai Gardening Basic Styles - Kengai and Han-Kengai
    Kengai (Cascade)
The Kengai style is one of the most beautiful and admired, but also one of the most difficult bonsai styles to achieve. You will notice that the tree trunk grows below the bottom level of the container and often twists in a lovely, unique style. While in Nature, a tree that grows near a cliff will be subject to harsh weather and elements, including heavy snowstorms, avalanches and forceful winds. Through these influences, they will be inverted as they grow. The typical bonsai artists cannot simulate a snowstorm, but there are training techniques, such as wiring and plenty of patience from the artist that will accomplish the same look. In order to remove any obstacles that will allow the tree to grow in the preferred style and direction, you will want to be sure that the tree and pot are near the edge of a table or bench so that the tree trunk can hang horizontally without problem. The trunk will be on its side and off-balance, so you will need to make sure that the pot is very heavy to compensate for the lack of stability. The trunk will be encouraged to grow in a u-shape downwards. The corresponding branches will be needed to grow horizontally in order to give the tree a full appearance. Typically, the bonsai artist will plant the species in the center of the pot and not near the edge. The tree will frequently be trained to go up and over the pot, rather than just limply over the edge. In this way, the tree will give a flowing look and have a tip that resides directly above the center. The branches should be trimmed carefully to create a stair-step pattern in order to complement the cascading look and give it a look that simulates a meandering river, flowing.

    Bonsai Gardening
Bonsai trees and plants can create a striking decoration, whether they are the outdoor type or indoor type, and there are many different species and varieties to choose from. Bonsai gardening can be as simple or complex as you want to make it. A bonsai is not a specific species of tree and plant but rather a process and group of techniques used to create certain traits in a large number of different trees and plants. The plants and trees used to make bonsai must meet certain qualifications, because bonsai is an art form that is created by following certain steps and practices.
Bonsai gardening can bring joy and relaxation into anyone's life, and couldn't everyone use a little more of this? One technique used to create bonsai trees and plants is to use a small shallow container to keep root development low, because over time this will stunt the growth, but not the health, of the plant. Pruning and trimming the branches and leaves to shape the bonsai, and pruning the roots to keep them smaller, all help to slow down the growth of the plant. The whole concept behind bonsai is to create mature or old plants that are smaller, sometimes miniature, compared to their usual size. Flowers, fruits, and colorful leaves are all commonly found on bonsai trees and plants.
Only trees and plants that meet a strict criteria can be used to create new bonsai trees and plants, which are classified as being younger than twenty years old. There are a number of plants, however, that meet the qualifications for bonsai gardening. This is because these trees and plants have visible roots, small leaves or needles on the branches, a thick and woody trunk which grows rapidly, and it must stand up to constant cutting and trimming. Any fruit or flowers on the Bonsai must be to scale, and not overly large and distracting.

Bonsai Gardening began in China in the 5th Century and then gradually increased in popularity around the world, moving to Japan and then France. Nowadays and fortunately for the Bonsai enthusiast, it has become fairly easy to learn about and source different types of trees.
Bonsai literally means 'tray and planted or growing' and is designed to grow plants in miniature, although people tend to only associate trees with this art form.
If you are intent on having Bonsai Gardening as a hobby, it is very important that you take time to learn about the hobby prior to investing in any financial outlay. There is a wealth of information available on this topic and this information can be sourced by purchasing a good book on the subject or by typing in 'bonsai gardening' into a search engine on the internet.
When looking to purchase a tree for your first attempt, try to source some bonsai suppliers on the internet as there are often great savings to be made this way. Another way of saving money and possibly increasing the discount received is to source all available materials needed and to buy it all from the one place.

The art of Bonsai gardening All About Bonsai
    The art of Bonsai gardening
Oriental culture shares with the world many wondrous and beautiful forms of art. None may be so alluring as the Japanese art of Bonsai. Bonsai gardening is ancient in its origin. Generally associated with Japanese culture, there are references to gardens of trimmed and potted plants from as long ago as the Roman and Egyptian empires. It is believed the migration of this type of gardening proceeded through India into China and then Japan. A common misconception is that bonsai trees are dwarf plants. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Japanese art of bonsai is in training and maintaining full size species in shallow confined pots. This process does not produce a dwarf but instead a miniature. All aspects of a normal size plant or tree are kept intact. The specimen must be proportioned, must have all the affectations of its life cycle, appeared to have met with the elements and it must function as if it were full size. The ability to obtain this level of horticultural theater is truly the embodiment of this garden art. As demanding as the above statements may seem, it is not difficult to grow bonsai and if cared for properly they can live as long, if not longer, than their full size cousins. These trees or plants can be of almost any variety. Once the basic understanding of how to maintain a bonsai is learned, you can determine the types of trees or plants your area can support and you should be able to grow a bonsai of those species.
