Bosnia Culture
Upon entering a Bosnian household, of any religious background, it is advised that you take your shoes off. Traditionally linked to the Muslim religion, it is a standard practice amongst all the different ethnic backgrounds as a remark of respect. If you have the pleasure of entering a Bosnian household you will without a doubt be offered Turkish coffee as it is central to the social culture. Coffee is usually followed by a variety of traditional cakes, and then something of a stronger nature. The fridge is always full of different pies, cheeses, meats and salamis as if they always anticipate a guest or two. A meza (platter of different delicatessens) is always at hand and once more it would be unnatural for the hosts not to shower you with food and drink until you are ready to burst. Bosnians can have a very persuasive nature and hence a 5 minute visit will often turn into a 5 hour gathering. The hospitality can be seen as overwhelming to a western bystander, however traditionally Bosnian’s measure of affluence has never been linked to the accumulation of wealth but to the character of their friendships. That’s why ones friends feel more like family in this country that’s full of soul.

The two regions are culturally indistinguishable and for much of their history have been united under one government. Although cultural variations in Bosnia and Herzegovina are minimal, cultural identity is currently extremely divisive. The three main groups are Muslims (Bosniacs), Serbs, and Croats. Before the recent civil war, many areas of the country had mixed populations; now the population has become much more homogeneous in most regions. Location and Geography. The climate varies from cold winters and mild, rainy summers in the mountains to milder winters and hot, dry summers in the rest of the country and a more Mediterranean climate near the coast. The entire region is vulnerable to severe earthquakes. Bosnia also suffers from air and water pollution because of poorly regulated industrial production in the years before the civil war. Important Notes: The language formerly known as Serbo-Croatian has split into three separate standard languages: Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian (BCS). However, all of these standards continue to be based on the same basic dialect type. While recognizing the countries of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia-Montenegro as separate, independent states, users of the current webliography are encouraged, as is the Academic norm, to treat BCS as one language and examine such sites as country-specific national corpora and language-specific online dictionaries.

    15. Biological Theories Of Sexual Assault
    The Advocates' Home
    http://stopvaw.org/biological_theories_of_sexual_assault.html
The Advocates' Home Feedback The VAW Monitor About the Site ... Biological Theories of Sexual Assault Biological Theories of Sexual Assault last updated February 1, 2006 The unfortunate prevalence of the "impulse" model has been fostered, in part, by the recent resurgence of more sophisticated biological theories of sexual assault. These theories assert that while there is no "gene" that causes men to rape, the existence of a predisposition to rape may be a consequence of evolution. According to this theory, men who are predisposed to rape may have more reproductive success (such as a higher number of offspring). Over long periods of time, this reproductive advantage results in a widespread predisposition to rape among males. Other theorists argue that predisposition to rape is not an adaptation itself, but the side-effect of reproductive adaptations, such as the pursuit of a number of partners. Paired with these biological explanations of the perpetrator's behavior have been biological explanations of the behavior of a victim of sexual assault. For women, sexual activity with a limited number of partners is desirable and thus women have evolved to resist rape. Further, these theorists argue, the experience of "trauma" associated with sexual assault was a reproductively successful response because women who experienced such trauma subsequently avoided being raped. Although some biological theorists maintain that acknowledging a biological basis for rape does not excuse rape, such theories can contribute to and perpetuate beliefs that excuse perpetrators from responsibility their actions and blame the victims. For example, some proponents of biological theories argue that because men cannot control their irresistible impulses to rape, it is women's responsibility to avoid dressing provocatively. According to this view, women who are raped must have put themselves in circumstances that led to rape and the appropriate response is to teach them how to avoid being raped.

What background information would have been helpful prior to your student teaching experience?
More information on the culture and educational expectations the students brought with them. Also the difference between Croatian and Bosnian - I ran into some conflicts within the classroom that could have been avoided had I known the strong emotions. (MJ) I believe that having acquired a basis of their language before entering the teaching environment would have been extremely helpful! It would have also been helpful to first meet with the parents to hear their expectations of the classroom environment and instruction. (AMR) I had researched the war and knew what had happened there, but I knew very little about their culture including how women were treated and the Islamic religion. Being ethnocentric I assumed they were Christians and was really confused when they said Christmas was not in December. (TAS) I feel I could have benefited from a little more cultural awareness training. One thing that was helpful was Human relations class, however this was halfway into student teaching! I could have been helped also by more exposure to various ESL programs and classroom experience. I felt only partially prepared to teach in a classroom. (AM)
