Bosnia Hercegovina : Culture
Mediterranean, western European, and Turkish determines are all felt in the cultural life of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and there are considerable variations between orthodox and modern and between rural and urban culture as well. Family ties are strong and friendship and neighbourhood networks well-developed. Great value is placed on hospitality, spontaneity, and the gifts of storytelling and wit. Summer activities include strolling on town korza, and throughout the year popular meeting places are kafane and kafici. Bosnian cuisine is a matter of pride and displays its Turkish determine in stuffed vegetables, coffee, and sweet cakes of the baklava type. Folk songs remain popular and well-known. Bosnia’s various population has made the nation’s cultural life valuable. Epic stories, a form of orthodox oral literature, were still sung throughout the nation well into the 1950s. Bosnian urban love songs, largely Muslim in origin, were popular throughout the former Yugoslavia. Ivo Andric, a Serb who was raised Catholic in Bosnia, won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1961. His novels include Na Drini cuprija, in which a bridge from the Ottoman time symbolically united the peoples of Bosnia. The novelist Meša Selimovic was of Muslim origin but said that he wrote Serbian literature. In comparison with much of eastern Europe, the news media in Yugoslavia were comparatively independent, censorship being achieved more through implicit threat than through direct intervention. Of the many newspapers, magazines, and journals circulating in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the most widely distributed were the dailies Oslobodenje and Vecernje Novine. The republic had almost 50 radio stations and one television station.

Bosnian Muslims
Beginning in the mid-to late fifteenth century, when the Ottoman Empire ruled the region, Islam came to Bosnia. Mass conversions took place, although there is no evidence to support a charge that coercion was involved. However, these conversions were centered within the landowning classes and among the free peasantry, whereas the serfs of the region remained by and large Christian. Bosnia-Hercegovina is predominantly rural and agricultural, and the Bosnian Muslim population is largely involved in agrarian pursuits. Cereal farming and livestock keeping are the centerpieces of the rural economy. Of those animals raised, sheep are the most important. In this Respect, they differ little from their non-Muslim neighbors. Their traditional, patrilocal, extended farm households ( zadruga ) also are of a type common to ethnic groups throughout the Balkans. All household members contribute to their collective economic well-being, with the bulk of the heavy agricultural labor and livestock care falling to the males. In the cities, Bosnian Muslims are heavily represented in craft production and tend to dominate the professions and civil-service posts. In religious matters, Bosnian Muslim practice is similar in most particulars to that of Turkish Muslims. Even after the establishment of the Communist government in the years after World War II, authorities tolerated Bosnian Muslim Religious observance and institutions. This toleration extended to Islamic schools, which were allowed to continue to operate, but only in addition to, rather than as a replacement for, the compulsory state educational system.

    People and Places
Bosnia-Herzegovina is home to an ethnically heterogeneous mixture of peoples, including Bosniaks ('Muslims'), Croats, Serbs, undetermined 'Yugoslavs', Jews, Albanians, Roma and others. Before the war, there were very few ethnically homogenous areas in Bosnia-Herzegovina; indeed an ethnic map of the pre-war republic is as variegated as a Jackson Pollock painting. Bosnia has five main cities (Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla, Mostar and Zenica) and numerous smaller towns. In the course of recent decades the population underwent a decisive shift towards industrialization and urbanization, producing in the main cities a vibrant, sophisticated, and highly educated population. Some of the most successful firms in the former Yugoslavia were located in Bosnia-Herzegovina, while the Winter Olympics, held in Sarajevo in 1984, lifted Bosnia and its capital to a special status. In the countryside, a more traditional rural lifestyle continues to exist. Bosnia is a country of exceptional natural beauty, with dramatic mountains and turquoise rivers, and striking contrasts between the green wooded hills of Central Bosnia, the bare limestone landscapes of Herzegovina and the fertile agricultural flatlands in the north. It is no surprise, then, that Bosnians around the world are proud of their birthplace, which means there is a wealth of on-line resources about Bosnian people and places.

    ... Country Profile
Bosnia has no majority in a single ethnic group, in fact, the 1991 census showed that the country is made up of 44 percent of Muslims, 31 percent of Serbs, 17 percent of Croats, 6 percent of Yugoslavs (people of mixed Muslim, Serb, and Croat ancestry), and 2 percent of others. Bosnia also has a small number of Roma (Gypsies) as well as a small section of Jews. Until independence, most of the people were urbanized, following a well-standard life style while the lesser well-off stayed in rural areas. But the war and the subsequent crash of economy have resulted in a drop in the standard of living and have seen many former working-women being confined to homes as mothers and housewives. The country has a rich and wonderful cultural heritage, where epic stories recited in the form of songs is famous through out Bosnia. The country is also famous for its love songs which have been used to express love over the centuries. The flag of Bosnia consists of a wide medium blue vertical band on the fly side with a yellow isosceles triangle abutting the band and the top of the flag; the remainder of the flag is medium blue with seven full five-pointed white stars and two half stars top and bottom along the hypotenuse of the triangle.

Name of Country Bosnia and Herzegovina Population 4,025,476 (July 2005 estimate) Government Emerging federal democratic republic Ethnic Groups There are three main ethnicities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nearly half the population are Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims), about one third are Bosnian Serbs and 15% are Bosnian Croats. 2% are from other ethnic groups. Religions Approximately 40% of the population are Muslim, 30% are Orthodox-Christian and 15% are Catholic. Languages The official languages are Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian (formerly 'Serbo-Croatian').
    Background
In the course of its history many different groups have ruled the area now called Bosnia and Herzegovina (Bosnia). From 1463 till 1878 Bosnia was under Ottoman rule and throughout that period many Bosnians became Muslim. After years of Austro-Hungarian rule and the turmoil of two World Wars, Bosnia became one of six republics in the new socialist Republic of Yugoslavia led by Josip Broz Tito. Since the Dayton Agreement Bosnian refugees have been returning. They often find that other refugees or returnees now occupy their pre-war homes, or that their houses were destroyed during the war. This poses a big obstacle to the return of refugees. The communities struggle with the effects of the war and it will take many years for trust to return. Before the war, life in Bosnia's cities such as Sarajevo was very similar to that of other industrialised countries. Almost two-thirds of all Bosnia's people lived in small rural villages, where farming was the main source of income.
