The Balkan Crisis: A brief history
The roots of the Balkan crisis of the 1990s, particularly those in the area identified as Bosnia-Hercegovina, are found in the history of what we call Yugoslavia beginning long before the birth of Christ, continuing into the Middle Ages and were exacerbated by developments before, during and after World War II. Here's an overview of the conflict:
BEFORE WRITTEN HISTORY
Anthropologists agree that the first people that we know for sure settled in the Balkans area that at various times has been called Yugoslavia were Illyrians, an Indo-European collection of tribes.
IT WAS ONCE ROMAN
The Romans conquered the area before the time of Christ, named it Illyricum and made it a province of its far-flung empire. Because of its crossroads location on the stage of Balkan trade and commerce, the rocky, hilly area has long been fought over, not because of its rich resources, but as a geo-political pawn.
THE SERBS CLIMB ONTO THE STAGE
A FURTHER COMPLICATION
SARAJEVO AND THE CROWN PRINCE
Most European schoolchildren are familiar with the story of how the assassination of archduke Ferdinand and his consort, the Duchess of Hohenberg, on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo launched World War I. The gunman, Gavrilo Princip was a Bosnian Serbian student who was an active member of the Mlada Bosna, group which had been formed among university and secondary school students to advance revolutionary ideas which, the group hoped, would lead to independence.

D E C E M B E R 20. After three-and-a-half years of trying, but failing, to keep the peace in Bosnia, United Nations commanders turn the job over to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Operation Joint Endeavor, NATO's largest military mission since its founding in 1949, begins. Peace agreement between the Bosnians, Croats and Serbs signed in Paris , ending a war that engulfed the Balkans for nearly four years, claimed more than 200,000 lives and made six million people homeless. "Bosnia must find a way, with God's grace, to lay down the hatreds, to give up the revenge, to go forward together," said President Clinton. President Clinton's Full Remarks 4. First official NATO peacekeeping troops arrive in Sarajevo aboard three camouflaged C-130 transport planes; two Americans are part of this advance contingent. As many as 13,000 other American soldiers, mostly from the Army's First Armored Division based in Germany, begin loading trains and trucks with equipment bound for Hungary, Bosnia and Croatia. 3. President Clinton gives the official order for the first group of American soldiers to go to Bosnia. French General Jean-Rene Bachelet, leader of French peacekeeping force in Sarajevo is called back to Paris for a tongue-lashing after Bachelet criticizes the terms of the Dayton peace accord. Senator Bob Dole dares rival GOP presidential candidates to support the troop deployment plan.

(Damir Sagolj/Reuters) Among those saved that day was Albert Musafia, age 11. Over the weeks and months that followed, non-Jewish friends and neighbors repeatedly helped the boy and his family. For a while, they lived hidden in an apartment in the center of Sarajevo; their neighbors all knew but no one turned them in to the authorities. Today there are only about 700 Jews left in Bosnia. Tauber fled to Israel in the early 1990s, but never forgot his homeland or the stories of how his parents survived the Holocaust. About 70 other members of his family perished, many of them in the notorious Croatian concentration camp Jasenovac, where Serbs, Jews, Roma and communists were killed.

The judges of the War Crimes Tribunal at The Hague called on Professor Paul Garde to give an historic overview of the Balkans region and Garde then fielded questions from the judges. Garde's testimony was given June 27-28, 1996. He is a professor of Slav literature and languages and has written many lingustics books. Since 1991 Garde's research and writing have focused on the break-up of Yugoslavia.
Q. What are some of the key events in the history of the former Yugoslavia? A. In the former Yugoslavia, in the western part of the Balkans, you have different peoples living there that speak the same language or similar languages the southern Slavic languages and you have peoples who for a long time have belonged to different cultural areas. You have the Serbs and Macedonians that belonged to eastern Christianity or orthodoxy, then you have the Croats that belong to western Christianity, to Catholicism. So, basically, you have different cultural backgrounds and you have sociological different habits, as it were. Back in the Middle Ages at different times you had Serb states, you had Croat states, you had Bosnian states, at different times, and covering different areas. And in modern times, as applied to the rest of the Balkans, you had the Ottoman Empire, and the regions in the north west were excluded from the Ottoman Empire and belonged to the Habsburg Empire.

A Brief History of Bosnia-Herzegovina
by Andras Riedlmayer, Harvard University Area 19,741 sq. mi. / 51,130 sq. km (about the size of West Virginia; 1/4 larger than Switzerland). Picturesque mountain scenery (Bosnia's capital Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics), much of it covered by forests; some coal and minerals, no oil. Bosnia's traditional borders, established in the medieval period, are: the Sava River (in the N), the Drina River (E/SE), and the Dinaric Alps (in the W). Herzegovina ("the Duchy") is the historical name for the country's southwestern region (around the town of Mostar). Located in the heart of Europe (as the crow flies, Sarajevo is closer to Rome than Milan is). Population Until the late 19th century, people of all three faiths identified themselves simply as Bosnians. Most Bosnians today are in fact highly secularized, and about a third of all urban marriages in Bosnia in recent decades have been between partners from different religious/ethnic backgrounds. While there were some villages in the countryside where one group or the other predominated, Bosnia's towns and cities have traditionally been the shared home of people from all ethnic and religious groups. The latter include Jews, who found a haven in the tolerant city of Sarajevo in 1492, following their expulsion from Spain. Unlike Jews in Venice and elsewhere in Europe, Sarajevo's Jews were not confined to a ghetto. The city's principal mosques, its synagogues and Christian churches are all located in close proximity to each other, a visible sign of the intermingled public and private lives of its ethnic and religious communities.

Roots of the Balkan troubles:
a history of ethnic skirmishes
More than four years of war have turned once-beautiful Yugoslavia into a living nightmare, and into one of the bloodiest battlefields in Europe's recent history. We see the images refugees bearing children and suitcases, war-wearied elderly women, crying soldiers. But many of us don't understand exactly how the turmoil began. Here's a brief look. The rivalries between Serb, Croat and Muslim communities in Yugoslavia date back centuries. Created in the aftermath of World War I, the country was first known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The name Yugoslavia was adopted in 1929. During World War II, Croats joined the Nazis in exterminating Serbs and others. The Serbs took up arms and hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians were killed on both sides. Josip Broz Tito, a partisan leader, led the resistance against the Nazis, ultimately driving them from Yugoslavia. Following the war, Tito was elected to lead the newly created Yugoslav Federation. Tito ruled with an iron fist, keeping ethnic rivalries in check. Despite such problems as astronomical inflation, the nation held together for a decade after Tito's death in 1980. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, democratic movements swept across much of Eastern Europe, including Yugoslavia. With the election of non-communist governments in four of Yugoslavia's six republics, the Federation began to crumble and ethnic divisions resurfaced.

It lies next to the Adriatic Sea, to the south of Croatia and west of Serbia. Its population is less than half that of London. Bosnia was part of the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire until 1878 and then of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the First World War. After the war it was united with other Slav territories to form Yugoslavia, essentially ruled and run by Serbs from the Serbian capital, Belgrade. By 1980 the population of Bosnia consisted of 1.3m Bosnian Serbs (Orthodox Catholic Christians), over 1m Bosniaks (Sunni Muslim), and 0.7m Bosnian Croats (Roman Catholic Christians), all with strong historical and local claims to a homeland there. In 1980 Yugoslavia's communist president Tito died. His rule had held the federation together. Now Croats and Bosniaks began to look for independence, and Serbian nationalism, never dead, took on a new lease of life from 1987 when Slobodan Milosevic became Serbia's leader (and thus effectively Yugoslavia's as well). He encouraged Serb nationalism not only at home but also in the other republics where there were large Serb communities.

    • Summary: Serbian efforts to force Bosnian Muslims from cities and villages throughout the Balkans have only recently lodged ethnic cleansing in the public mind. But in the annals of history such atrocities are far from new. From ancient Assyria to modern Serbia, campaigns to homogenize populations within inviolate borders have been carried out variously in the name of God, nation or ideology. Yet ethnic cleansing remains difficult to define. Less understood is the compulsion for national "purity" at such horrific costs. The most likely outcome of the Balkans war is a patchwork of ethnically distinct regions, with few minority populations. Perhaps then the violence will end. Login or Register to leave a comment.
