The Gardens
The Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens held its grand opening in March 2010. The Gardens sit on 19.71 acres of property on the west side of Westmoreland Boulevard, just south of Port St. Lucie Blvd. The property was acquired through the joint efforts of the City of Port St. Lucie, St. Lucie County, and the Florida Trust for Public Lands. The site boasts a pond with a fountain, paved public paths, beautiful gardens, a pavilion, a gift shop and a special place for weddings, as well as ample public parking. Just south of the property is a proposed hotel site that, along with the Gardens, sits on the banks of the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. This site is comprised of Scrub, Scrubby Flatwoods, Bay-Gall and Wet Flatwoods, with a mangrove fringe along the North Fork. The 12.87 acres south of the hotel site will be maintained as undisturbed Florida wetlands, subject only to the removal of exotics and maintenance of a walking trail. Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens
City Park, Dunsmuir, California The Botanical Gardens is located in the heart of the Dunsmuir City Park in far northern California, encompassing about ten acres of a hilly, wooded area with a meadow, a playground area, and picnic sites bordering the beautiful Upper Sacramento River. Our native white dogwood is prolific in the park and provides a glorious show in the spring. Unique to this area are many Shasta lilies growing on the hillsides and the beautiful, fragrant native azaleas that grow along the river. In addition to the many beautiful native species , a variety of other perennial plants and shrubs have been introduced. These include rhododendrons, hostas, ferns and Japanese maples. During the spring and summer, various annuals greet visitors with a rainbow of colors. Numerous walking trails meander through the park, allowing good viewing of the native and introduced plant material. The Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens enhance the natural setting and provide a tranquil environment for visitors. The meadow is the venue for the 'Tribute to the Trees' concert, and other events throughout the year.

Introduction Biological diversity is of vital importance for the health and well being of all life. Yet natural habitats are being destroyed at an alarmingly accelerated pace, threatening the source of the diversity on which we depend. In protecting biodiversity, the importance of plants must not be overlooked. With the ability to harness energy from the sun and produce oxygen, plants are the basis of life on earth. To adequately protect plants and their habitats, conservation efforts and public awareness of these efforts must improve. Canadian Botanical Gardens host over 4.5 million visitors per year and are important science and educational facilities, providing leadership in plant conservation and public education.
        Project Description
Investing in Nature: A Partnership for Plants in Canada programme came to an end after four-year of activities (2003 to 2006). The mission of Investing in Nature: A Partnership for Plants in Canada was to build a Canadian network to increase public awareness of the importance of plants, the threats they face, and the actions needed to protect them. Through the course of this project we developed several educational resources, enhanced plant conservation and biodiversity education efforts and linked Canadian botanical gardens to international conservation and environmental education networks (read more details in

what makes a good botanical center. good botany : a botanical center must be focused on the study of plants. It is best if that study is regional in that the local flora is the primary focus or is the launch pad for broader study, For example Denver Botanical has focused on plants that grow in high elevation xeric environments. They have a great collection of native cacti and local plants in which to build an international collection that is useful to landscapers, and patrons of the center good connections to other botanical centers: Kew gardens is probable the best at this because of its historic relationship to the crown and the British Empire. You will see the Kew relationship all over the world as is true of the Huntington and The New York Botanical. a qualified staff that has a true love of plants and an intimate knowledge of plants: San Antonio is a good example of this dicotemy Paul Cox who was the interim director for a time should really be the director because of his knowledge and enthusiasim for plants. The present director has shown more of an affinity for bedding plants and planning weddings. These things sometimes are necessary to a botanical center but should never over shadow the primary importance of botany. If you look at the great centers you will always see a great botanist at the forefront. Sometimes this is hard for patrons to swallow who are more interested in throwing parties and using botanical centers as backdrops for society parties.
