Automotive ... Real Estate Story last updated at 11:37 a.m. on Sunday, March 7, 1999 Botanical Garden breathes life into Athens By Wayne C. Wehunt Correspondent For more than 30 years, Athens-Clarke County has been home to a natural treasure yet to be discovered by many area residents. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, off South Milledge Avenue a short distance outside the Athens Perimeter, is the realization of a dream that took root more than three decades ago. The idea for a botanical garden in Athens was first proposed to the University of Georgia by its Campus Planning and Improvement Committee on Dec. 14, 1967, according to Francis E. Johnstone Jr., the first director of the garden. After receiving approval from the Board of Regents, UGA President Fred Davison appointed a 10-member Faculty Garden Committee to select a suitable site, prepare a program of major requirements and develop a budget and plan for financing the garden.

Welcome to the University of Bristol Botanic Garden
The University Botanic Garden has been created within the grounds of The Holmes at Stoke Bishop, just off Durdham Down and major landscaping has now been completed. Planting commenced in 2005 and further planting is transforming the site. The 1.77 hectare garden, which opened in March 2006, focuses on four themed plant collections: (i) Plant Evolution , (ii) Plants of Mediterranean Climate Regions , (iii) Useful Plants , and (iv) Local Flora and Rare Native Plants , carefully chosen to fulfil the teaching, research and conservation requirements of a small University Botanic Garden in the 21 st Century. As well as enhancing the teaching of Plant Sciences within the University, this investment by the University of Bristol together with generous donations from alumni and the friends of the garden provides a unique teaching resource for local schools and a new cultural attraction for the City of Bristol.

Welcome to the National Tropical Botanical Garden
The importance of plants to life on earth is immeasurable. We depend upon them for the air we breathe, for the food we eat, for shelter, and for medicine. Ninety percent of all plant and animal species on our planet exist in the tropics that warm moist belt that circles the earth. And it is in these regions where the extinction rate is the highest. Species are disappearing faster than anyone knows. They cannot be replaced. The National Tropical Botanical Garden is dedicated to preserving tropical plant diversity and stemming this tide of extinction - through plant exploration, propagation, habitat restoration, scientific research, and education. NTBG's gardens and preserves are safe havens for at-risk species that otherwise might disappear forever.
