Home Library Science Dictionary of Scientists Russian–German climatologist (1846–1940) Köppen was educated at the university in his native city of St. Petersburg and then at Heidelberg and Leipzig. Although he began his career in 1872 with the Russian meteorological service, he moved to Germany shortly afterward where, in 1875, he was appointed director of the meteorological research department of the German Naval Observatory at Hamburg, a post he retained until the end of World War I when he was succeeded by his son-in-law Alfred Wegener. Köppen is mainly remembered today for the mathematical system of climatic classification he first formulated in 1900 and subsequently modified several times before 1936. He began by distinguishing between five broad climatic types – tropical rainy, dry, warm temperate, cold forest, and polar – symbolized by the letters A to E respectively. He further defined three patterns of precipitation : a climate with no dry period (f), with a dry summer period (s), and with a dry winter period (w). Four geographical zones were also introduced –

Background
Fries is considered to be, after Persoon, founding father of modern mushroom taxonomy (see mycology ). His taxonomy of mushrooms was influenced by German romantics (see Goethe). He utilized spore color and arrangement of the hymenophore (pores, gills, teeth etc.) as major taxonomic characteristics. The first three years of school, Mohr spent at the paedegogium of his home town. In 1833 the family moved to nearby Denkendorf where August Mohr founded a mustard and vinegar factory. On September 10 of the same year, August Mohr died suddenly. Early in life, Mohr worked in the family business. He developed an interest in botany through his great-uncle, a forester at the Denkendorf convent, and his uncle's son, a student at the agricultural college in Hohenheim. Through the self-study of several books on botany, Mohr furthered his knowledge in this area and developed a taste for natural science. Following his mother's wishes, he attended the Polytechincal school in Stuttgart in autumn of 1842. There he studied chemistry under Professor
