Botswana Culture
Botswana culture is rare, making Botswan one of the few countries in sub-Saharan Africa with a fairly homogeneous ethnic background. The country's population is mainly Tswana, who speak a Bantu language and are divided into eight major groups. There are also small minorities of Kalanga, Basarwa, Kgalagadi, and other peoples. English is the official language, but Tswana or Setswana is also widely spoken. Although Setswana is the most spoken native language, the other indigenous languages are also used. These are often very similar to Setswana. More than 70% of the population follow Christianity and about 10% adhere to traditional practices. Western food is readily available in restaurants, hotels, lodges and in cities, families have adopted the western diets. Traditional food is still the main diet of the locals irrespective of the financial status. A wholesome home made meal of paleche (porridge), morogo (a greeny leavy vegetable) similar to spinach and nama or as known in English, meat makes up the staple food of the Bastwana people. Botswana is a landlocked country and has a total area of 602,957 square kilometres.

Botswana Culture Guide, Cultural Safaris in Botswana, People and Language Tswana
For the past years, Botswana has longed to get its own state-run culture, not until it was achieved that the country settled in peace. There are different types of cultures in Botswana and among these include the Setswana and many others. The standard as well as development of  safaris in Botswana has been credited for its nationalized culture along with the post colonial English culture. Of recent, the prominent state-run culture of Botswana represents a mixture of two legacy and these include Tswana along with the English cultural sector.Surprisingly, all people from different ethnic origins in Botswana are well versed and comfortable in both languages. A few things that used to made Botswana culture beautiful in the ancient years included the following; the customary Tswana had exciting entertainment due to the fact that people used to their human voices to sing accompanied with string instruments. The drums were available although they produced minimum sound so as to listen to the sweet voices. Unfortunately during the colonial period, the traditional music and dance started to turn down because they believed that it was not developmental to the country. The Setswana people could not just sit and watch their culture collapsing rather they did all they would to revive their culture in schools and this has been acknowledged when official visitors are welcomed with a traditional dance.

Introduction
It is a truism to say that all countries are multicultural but at the same time are linked to globalized culture. But the recognition of multiculturalism in Botswana has been blocked, until the later 1990s, by the need to develop a unifying national culture. That national culture is based largely upon Setswana (Tswana language) culture. It represents the growth of a distinct Botswana nationality defined within state borders, and embraces elements of postcolonial English culture. Tswana national culture can be traced back to the incorporation of diverse peoples under a string of Tswana states, beginning in the later 18th century and reaching maturity by the time of British colonization at the end of the 19th century. The Tswana states, linked by the the kinship ties of their rulers speaking linked dialects of a common language, were brought together in allianceagainst common enemies between the 1850s and the 1890s. Such'tribal' federalism continued into the colonial period. Everyone within the colonial boundaries of Botswana came to be regarded as a Motswana, regardless of ethnic origin. Hence many outsiders assumed that Botswana was a monocultural entity with only one 'tribe'. But it was not until the end of colonialism that the old Tswana states were incorporated into a unitary state, under a powerful central government, between 1964 and 1969.

Western dress has been general among people in Botswana, except at the poorest level. Families in rural villages live in orthodox compounds, usually with two or three small houses of cylindrical clay walls and conical thatch roofs, set around an open fireplace and surrounded by low clay walls. Most recent houses are square with metal roofs, while many houses in the northwest are made of reed. Central Chobe Ghanzi Kgalagadi ... AskBabyNames @ 2008 MapZones

Richness beyond diamonds
Cattle ownership
The most prominent status symbol for the majority of people in Botswana is cattle ownership. The larger and healthier the herd, the more the owner is respected by those around him. Attaching wealth and status to cattle herding is an ancient tradition that goes back to the first herders who lived in Botswana and the settlements that sprung up around their corrals.
Music and dance
From an early age, children are taught to appreciate and hold dear the customs of music and dance. In primary school, children are taught traditional music and dance, and large competitions are held on a regular basis as schools around the country showcase their talents. Skins and beaded jewelry are a standard part of any traditional Botswanan dance costume. You can experience traditional Botswanan dance at the Kuru San Dance Festival in the Kalahari Desert or at the Maitisong Festival in Gaborone.
Crafts
Basket-making The basket-weavers of Botswana are considered some of the best at their craft. Using boiled and dyed mokolwane palm, the weavers create patterned baskets in a variety of colors and shapes. Some of the patterns on the baskets, often geometric or animal shapes, mimic the designs of traditional beaded aprons and skirts. The basket-making industry brings a degree of income to rural peoples, and the baskets themselves are considered valuable souvenirs by Western visitors. Carvings The skilled craftspeople of Botswana create carvings from a variety of media. Bone- and woodcarving are popular trades that are seeing a revival from the tourist industry. Jewelry, small statuettes, bowls and tools are all fashioned out of these materials, and they showcase the tremendous skill it takes to excel in this ancient art.

Botswana Culture, Map, Flag, Tourist Places
The 17th Century brought the Tswana, or Batswana from the South, a Bantu people related to the Sotho of Transvaal and Lesotho. The Tswana now make up over 50% of Botswana's population and the remaining peoples have been heavily absorbed into this culture. This may be one of the main reasons for Botswana's cultural and social stability over the last two centuries. No accurate records exist of the first ever inhabitants of Botswana, although tool fragments and other evidence of human activity have been uncovered which are thought to be around 27,000 years old. The Basarwa, also known as San Bushmen, were among the first recognised people to inhabit the country although only 40,000 remain today. Botswana has never been colonised, but it has been heavily influenced by the surrounding countries and by England whose protection was sought in the 1880's. A strip of land to the east of the country, in the Tuli block, was, however, conceded to the BSA company in order to work on the Cape to Cairo railway. Botswana's population numbers around 1.6 million with 80% living in the fertile eastern areas near the borders with Zimbabwe and South Africa. The growth rate is high at around 3.4% and over 50% of the population are under 16 years old. Most people live in central villages surrounded by widely spaced cattle posts which the men tend for the majority of their time. Many younger people are drifting towards the two cities and smaller towns in search of employment, unfortunately this is limited and unemployment is a growing concern. Life expectancy is now 37 for men and 39 for women. This has fallen from around 65 in 1995, largely due to the AIDS pandemic. Setswana is the Botswana's national language while English is the official language. a Bantu language understood by over 90% of the population.
