Botswana : History
Batswana, a term also used to denote all citizens of Botswana, refers to the country's major ethnic group (the "Tswana" in South Africa), which came into the area from South Africa during the Zulu wars of the early 1800s. Prior to European contact, the Batswana lived as herders and farmers under tribal rule. In the 19th century, hostilities broke out between the Batswana and Boer settlers from the Transvaal. After appeals by the Batswana for assistance, the British Government in 1885 put "Bechuanaland" under its protection. The northern territory remained under direct administration and is today's Botswana, while the southern territory became part of the Cape Colony and is now part of the northwest province of South Africa; the majority of Setswana-speaking people today live in South Africa. Despite South African pressure, inhabitants of the Bechuanaland Protectorate, Basutoland (now Lesotho), and Swaziland in 1909 asked for and received British assurances that they would not be included in the proposed Union of South Africa. An expansion of British central authority and the evolution of tribal government resulted in the 1920 establishment of two advisory councils representing Africans and Europeans. Proclamations in 1934 regularized tribal rule and powers. A European-African advisory council was formed in 1951, and the 1961 constitution established a consultative legislative council.

San (Bushmen) were the aboriginal inhabitants of what is now Botswana, but they constitute only a small portion of the population today. The Tswana supplanted the San, who remained as subjects. Beginning in the 1820s, the region was disrupted by the expansion of the Zulu and their offshoot, the Ndebele. However, Khama II, chief of the Ngwato (the largest Tswana nation), curbed the depredations of the Ndebele and established a fairly unified state. A new threat arose in the late 19th cent. with the incursion of Boers (Afrikaners) from neighboring Transvaal . After gold was discovered in the region in 1867, the Transvaal government sought to annex parts of Botswana. Although the British forbade annexation, the Boers continued to encroach on native lands during the 1870s and 80s. German colonial expansion in South West Africa (Namibia) caused the British to reexamine their policies, and, urged on by Khama III Britain provided for the eventual transfer of Bechuanaland to the Union of South Africa; in succeeding years, however, South Africa's attempts at annexation were countered by British insistence that Bechuanaland's inhabitants first be consulted. The rise of the National party in South Africa in 1948 and its pursuit of

Botswana History
The history of Botswana provides us lot of information about the original country and its gradual development in all the major spheres. Botswana history tells us that the original inhabitants of Botswana were the bush people. They actually moved from north to the south. The bush people were followed or succeeded by the Hottentots, who spoke Bantu language and belonged to almost 2,000 years ago. These groups of people lived quite peacefully, happily and trade flourished well among them. Botswana history is supplemented with a good number of facts and figures, which make the people inclined to know more about this African country. From Botswana history it has been deciphered that the people, who used to speak Shona language, got settled in the north eastern part in and around the 10th century AD.
The Tswana ethnic group of people came from the south to the south east in the 15th century and got well established in that area in the 18th century. During the year 1820, different groups assembled together to form a nation in the place, which is presently the border between South Africa and Botswana. Botswana got independence in the year 1966 and it is largely dependent on South Africa for its food and wages of mine workers. In the present time, there has been a sea change in the economic growth of the country and Botswana currently has a huge reserve of foreign currencies. The biggest problem here is the alarming increase in birth rate. However, steps are being taken to minimize that also.

In June 1964, Britain accepted proposals for democratic self-government in Botswana. The seat of government was moved from Mafikeng, in South Africa, to newly accomplished Gaborone in 1965. The 1965 constitution led to the first general elections and to freedom in September 1966. Seretse Khama, a leader in the freedom movement and the legitimate claimant to orthodox rule of the Batswana, was elected as the first president, re-elected twice, and died in office in 1980. The presidency passed to the sitting vice president, Ketumile Masire, who was elected in his own right in 1984 and re-elected in 1989 and 1994. Masire retired from office in 1998. The presidency passed to the sitting vice president, Festus Mogae, who was elected in his own right in 1999.

Information guide to history in Botswana. The ability to view animals at very close quarters within Botswana's wildlife areas, and the presence of the last remaining wilderness area in Africa, has ensured that tourism is the second largest industry in Botswana. In 1956 the Botswana Government created the first game department for wild animals. The next 10 years saw the Moremi and Chobe reserves established and an up-to-date Fauna Proclamation promulgated. These two factors were responsible for the change of attitude amongst the local population toward wildlife. In 1962 the first safari operators obtained concessions and started to conduct safaris similar to those being operated in East Africa. In 1966 the Game Department was expanded and its policy was changed. The next eight years saw huge tracks of land declared wildlife reserve. Today some 17% of Botswana is wildlife area. Cultural History Man-made stone tools, some over 300 000 years old, have been found throughout the country, suggesting the whole land has been inhabited sporadically for a very long time. To the people of Botswana, the preservation of the different tribal cultures are of great importance, it gives the nation pride and is considered to be the root of their existence. Based on this, different peoples have different stories concerning their origins.

To BHP Index To end of page Back to History Home Page Site Index ... 15: Media Comments on History of Botswana Provisional version by Neil Parsons April 1999 The direct inspiration for these pages was The Botswana Pages , a personal web-site set up by Vishvas Q. Sethi through the Stuart School of Business in Chicago. At the beginning of April 1999 it featured just two links - one to Stockbrokers Botswana and another (including video) to SABC TV News' Channel Africa. If he could do it, so could I, and better. To be fair to Sethi the site has grown in the last couple of weeks, including some overlap with Africa Informatix's Botswana Online , and promises much more to come - including soccer results. Sethi's brief history of Botswana is now supplemented by a useful list of events and dates. But the history of Botswana is not well served by other web-sites. Most ignore the history of Botswana, and some are positively misleading.
