Accidents happen. Brain injury happens. Unsolicited. Unanticipated. Unwelcome. In the blink of an eye, everything changes; nothing is as it was before. How will you identify brain injury if it happens to you or to someone you love? How will you cope with it? What resources will you need? Where will you find them? The Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts (BIA-MA) is a not-for-profit organization that provides support services to brain injury survivors and their families, offers programs to prevent brain injuries, educates the public on the risks and impact of brain injury, and advocates for legislation and improved services. On this site, you and your family will find answers to the questions and concerns you have about traumatic or acquired brain injury, and learn about resources that may help you. BIA-MA has more than 30 support groups throughout the state for survivors, families, and caregivers.  These groups offer social, recreational and educational programs.

By November of 2000 she was able to live at home with her husband. She was walking, talking, writing, feeding herself, dressing herself, joking, reading, paying bills, making salad dressing, etc. She retained both long term and short term memory. Some vegetable! The doctors are all saying "It's a miracle". Well, maybe but maybe what I did helped her. I want to lend my support to all family members and loved ones of brain injury survivors because I have been through it and know the pain, frustration and challenge that a loved one can experience, and more importantly, I want to share my theories and information with you all so that you can help to possibly make a miracle happen too.
neuroplasticity.

. You know them better than any doctor, therapist or nurse, and they know you better than anyone. They are affected by your praise more than you can imagine, whether you are a husband, wife, father, mother, sister, brother. son, daughter, or other loved one. In my opinion, you have the power to stimulate their brain and to help in healing it.
. If you consistently tell them that they will recover and constantly tell them how well they are doing, then I think they will do much better than if a family member is negative. Now that my mother is cognitive, she tells me that my praise meant everything to her and that she heard much of what I said when she was in a coma and in the "vegetative" (or non-responsive) state. Furthermore, my mother felt and reacted to pain during the vegetative stage. Families should be aware of this.

How to Recover: Comebacks from Traumatic Brain Injury
Whoever you may be, sometime or other life may well deal you a bad hand. And I can tell you, a traumatic brain injury ("TBI") is indeed a bad one! But it seems that the trick to life is recovering well from bad hands. This blog is about the ups and downs I've had and the lessons I've learnt recovering from mine.

TBI Recovery and a Higher Power

On the question of fatalism versus freewill, I fall very much on the side of free-will: while I believe a greater power might give me a sign as to the right way, I believe it is entirely up to me to follow it. Please let me know if you agree or have any thoughts about my attempting to reconcile fatalism and freewill for TBI recovery.

Greetings from the State of Wisconsin Brain Injury Advisory Council Each year approximately 1.4 million individuals in the United States will sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from motor vehicle-traffic crashes, falls, assaults, or other means.* Annually in Wisconsin around 5,700 people will sustain a TBI.** Although statistics are difficult to obtain, we know countless others will acquire brain injuries (ABI) by other means such as experiencing a loss of oxygen, brain tumor, aneurysm, stroke, or seizure disorder. No matter how a brain injury is sustained, there is a likely to be a significant impact on the life of the person injured, as well as on those who love and care for them. The Brain Injury Advisory Council (BIAC) is a group of committed individuals who have come together to help improve the lives of those affected by brain injury. It is composed of representatives with brain injury expertise, including consumers, family members, providers, state and county representatives and advocates. We are appointed by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Family Services to engage in successful education, training, and legislative and policy advocacy on issues affecting people with brain injuries. You can find information about our work on this website. Please use this site to learn about our efforts. We welcome volunteers to our committees. Approximately 1.5 million Americans per year sustain a brain injury. Of those, 50,000 people will die as a result of brain injury, while 80,000 people per year will experience long-term disabilities as a result of their injury. There are two types of brain injury: traumatic brain injury, and acquired brain injury.

Texas researchers have found that patients with long-standing but stable traumatic brain injury (TBI) show a general improvement in speech, memory and attention after undergoing a series of hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments. Dr. Paul Harch and colleagues presented their findings in Seattle at the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society Annual Scientific Meeting.
The researchers enrolled 11 patients from The Transitional Learning Community in Galveston, Texas, who had chronic stable TBI for at least 3 years. Five of the patients initially had 80 sessions in a multichamber hyperbaric oxygen unit.
