Safety Tips for Farming with a Brain Injury
Easter Seal Society

It is very important to determine the exact nature of the limitations and how these limitations may affect performing farm tasks safely. The following is a list of general tips that farmers with brain injuries have shared to help prevent additional injuries.
  • If the doctor says that you shouldn't drive a car, then you shouldn't operate farm machinery. If the doctor says that you can operate an automobile with modifications, then you can also operate farm machinery with appropriate modifications. Please consult with a rehabilitation professional regarding the appropriate modifications. Head protection, such as helmets, should be worn at all times when performing farm related tasks. If the injury has resulted in limited mobility, appropriate mobility aids should be selected to prevent falls. These aids may include: a used golf cart; lawn mower with adaptations; an appropriate wheelchair; and special cane tips for maneuvering around ice, snow, and loose gravel.

    BIRD
    25 years of hope
Before BIRD we had no thoughts for the future and saw our little girl being unable to have any independence or choice of life but since coming to BIRD her quality of life is excellent. Julianne from Scotland having been told by doctors that there was 'no hope' for our son, BIRD has helped him enormously, he can now do things that a year ago we never thought possible. Wendy from Shropshire Looking back now we feel that it is nonsense for medical people to have told us that autistic children cannot be helped, through BIRD our son's behaviour has been changed forever. It hasn't been a cure, our son still has his own little ways but he has gained in confidence, is a lot happier and we now feel that there is a good chance that he will live independently as an adult. Simon from Cheshire I came to BIRD as a last resort. A few days after starting the programme we saw small improvements, after two years we have never looked back, thank you BIRD a million times over!

Every 30 minutes, a child or young person will acquire a brain injury. This could be the result of:
    • An accident An illness such as meningitis or encephalitis A poisoning A stroke A brain tumour
A brain injury has a devastating and life-long impact on the child and their whole family. Bones can mend and scars can heal but a brain injury stays with you for life and impacts on everything you think, feel and do. Established in 1991, the Child Brain Injury Trust helps children, young people, their families and professionals to come to terms with what has happened and how to deal with the uncertainty that the future holds. An acquired brain injury will affect each person differently. However, there are some common issues that children and young people may face: Memory loss Mobility problems Fatigue Concentration Personality changes Behavioural issues Changes in the way that they perceive themselves and others We provide information, support and training to anyone affected by childhood acquired brain injury. This includes the child or young person themselves, their family and the professionals who support them.

    95. Introduction
In November, 1999, Richard suffered horrific brain injuries in a car crash and was given no chance of survival. His father describes the on-going battle with TBI.
    http://www.richardsstory.co.uk/
Richard in May 1999 Preface Fortunately most of us will go through our lives never knowing what a traumatic brain injury is. Until fairly recently most people that suffered one died without regaining consciousness. A traumatic brain injury occurs when the head is hit hard enough to cause tears and fissures within the brain itself, blood vessels may rupture allowing blood to spill into the brain causing further damage. Imagine if you will a blancmange on a plate, now imagine what will happen to that blancmange if you give the plate a sudden violent jerk, splits and tears will appear randomly throughout the blancmange. Imagine now that the blancmange has a series of blood vessels within it and that some of these have likewise torn, and that blood is spilling from them into the blancmange. It’s a ghastly mess. Probably the most common cause of traumatic brain injury comes about as the result of a road traffic accident. Typically the car (and it usually is a car) will be being driven by a young man aged somewhere between 18 and 25, the car will be a high-performance model, and the driver will be inexperienced. This concoction of testosterone, speed, and inexperience can combine to produce a scenario the results of which provide the transplant surgeon with more organs than does any other scenario that society currently accepts. Over the last 20 years with the increasing skill of neurosurgeons, and with the increasing level of expertise and equipment available within intensive care units and with the dedication of the nursing staff and doctors that work within these intensive care units, many of the people that would have died as a result of such accidents now survive, but this survival is not without cost. Typically the survivor will remain in a coma for many days or even weeks, sometimes even months and then slowly, very slowly he will emerge from his coma into an unknown world.
