These wind instruments are used in all types of music, from classical to pop, and they are necessary to seat a full symphony orchestra. How to Clean a Brass Instrument Brass instruments, including trumpets, cornets, trombones, French horns, and tubas, need regular cleaning and maintenance to keep them in good musical condition. Ziggy Kanstul knows more about brass instruments than most people. As an important part of the manufacturing end of the FE Olds Company, Ziggy became an expert on model designs, the specifications for each and every product, and the measurements of the horns made by their competitors. He later formed the Kanstul Musical Instrument Company in Anaheim, CA, and soon established a respected product line that includes trombones, trumpets, and tubas. Ziggy has also brought together some of the biggest names in instrument design to work on the task of improving his products. This impressive list includes Byron Autrey, Mudge Miller, and Doc Severinsen (all of which have also been interviewed for this video collection).

Brass instrument (lip reed) acoustics: an introduction
Trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba... This page explains the physics of brass instruments (technically the lip reed family). It requires no mathematics beyond multiplication and division, nor any technical knowledge of acoustics. For a range of background topics in acoustics (waves, frequencies, resonances, decibels etc) click on "Basics" in the navigation bar at left. (1.9 Meg) To set the mood, listen to Anthony Heinrichs playing part of the cadenza from the trumpet concerto by Joe Wolfe.
Overview
  • The player provides air at a pressure above that of the atmosphere (technically, from a few kPa to perhaps tens of kPa: from a few percent to a few tenths of an atmosphere). This is the source of power input to the instrument, but it is a source of continuous power. In a useful analogy with electricity, it is like DC electrical power. Sound is produced by an oscillating motion or air flow (like AC electricity).
  • In the lip reed instruments, the lips act as a vibrating valve: technically we say that they form a control oscillator that, in cooperation with the resonances in the air in the instrument, produces an oscillating component of both flow and pressure: it converts some of the DC power of the breath into AC sound power.

Discover the unique way in which musicians play brass instruments, and how valves and slides can be manipulated to change the instruments’ pitch. You’ll find out why these instruments include so many twists and coils, why so-called “natural” brass instruments are rarely used anymore, and which brass instrument is the hardest to play.
