Brazilian Culture return to the interest links index The Brazilian population today comes from four ethnic groups: the indigenous Indians, the colonizing Portuguese, the African Negroes, and a number of immigrant European and Oriental groups that have come to Brazil since the 1850's. The most important of these cultures is that of the Portuguese, from whom the Brazilians acquired their language, their religion and most of their traditional customs. The indian contribution to Brazilian culture is perhaps most apparent in the Amazon Basin. Evident in northern coastal regions are religious cults of African origin. African influence is also reflected in Brazilian popular music, especially in the rhythmic samba. Brazil is a country that adapts readily to rapid changes and new opportunities. Brazilian Culture
Brazil
Brazil is a country full of surprises and delights but also full of corruption and mystery. (João) In fact, it is not unusual to witness prostitution in Brazil's larger cities. (Lonely Planet) When meeting a Brazilian, they seem "normal" to an American; such was the case when I met my partner, João. This paper will cover various cultural aspects of Brazil, my partner's home country.
There are many customs and courtesies one should understand to ideally communicate with a Brazilian. When greeting a Brazilian you kiss a woman once on each cheek, from left to right and you greet a male but giving him a handshake. Long handshakes are common in Brazil and good eye contact is important. (Maria-Brazil) There are a number of gestures specific to Brazilians. One is a greeting gesture, in which a person gives the "thumbs up" to signal ok or thank you. Another is "não-não" finger wagging, which is the most daunting if done right under the other person's nose but it is not a threat. (Lonely Planet) If a Brazilian doesn't want something they simply just slap the back of their hands. (Lonely Planet) These are just a few of the many gestures Brazilians use.

Brazilian Culture through Brazilian Eyes
Whenever you are vising a foreign country, you will have opportunities to learn, to enjoy, to be surprised. However, you will also find reasons to complain, if you keep looking for them! After working in multi-cultural projects in Brazil, and as a Brazilian myself, I have noticed that those who come to our country with a positive attitude and an open mind ALWAYS get the most out of their stay. ;-) It works like a mirror: the more you try to understand us, the more willing we will be to understand you. And believe me, when in a foreign country it is much better to live among friends!
When Meeting People...
  • Men usually shake hands when greeting one another, and keep eye contact.
Women usually kiss each other on their cheeks. Twice when both are married, three times when one of them is single. On this case, the married one says "Três, pra casar!", meaning 'three kisses, for you to get married".
Hugging is a very common way of expressing acceptance and friendship, especially when you haven't seem your friend for a long time. Backslapping is a little more common in business and in casual relationships.

    Brazilian Culture
    Culture
Brazilian culture is a Latin American culture of a very diverse nature. It's main influence comes from Portuguese, due to colonial ties with the Portuguese empire that spread the Portuguese language, legal system and other cultural inheritances. Other important influences came from African and Amerindian people creating a diverse multicultural and multiethnic society.
Religion in Brazil is very diverse, about ninety percent of Brazilians declare some sort of religious affiliation. Roman Catholics make up the bulk with over seventy percent of the population. Brazil has a large number of Jehovah's Witnesses and Latter-day Saints. Among the field of other religions were Buddhists, Jewish people and Muslims. In the same field were those who practice a mixture of different religions, such as Catholicism, Candomble, and other American religions
Portuguese is the official language of Brazil. It is spoken by nearly the entire population and is mainly the only language used in schools, newspapers, radio and TV. Brazil is the only Portuguese-speaking nation in the Americas. However, many minority languages are spoken daily throughout the vast national territory of Brazil. Some of these are spoken by native people. Others yet are spoken by people who are for the most part bilingual. Brazilian Portuguese has had its own development. It was influenced by the Amerindian and African languages. Due to it, the language is somewhat different from that spoken in Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking countries, mainly for grammatical differences.

      Brazilian Culture
Culture Brazilian culture has been shaped not only by the Portuguese, who gave the country its most common religion and language, but also by the country's native Indians, the considerable African population, and other settlers from Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Brazilian music has always been characterized by great diversity and, shaped by musical influences from three continents, is still developing new and original forms. The samba, which reached the height of popularity in the 1930s, is a mixture of Spanish bolero with the cadences and rhythms of African music. Its most famous exponent was probably Carmen Miranda, known for her fiery temperament and fruity headdresses. The more subdued bossa nova, popular in the 1950s and characterized by songs such as 'The Girl from Ipanema', was influenced by North American jazz. Tropicalismo is a mix of musical influences that arrived in Brazil in the 1960s and led a more electric samba. More recently, the lambada, influenced by Caribbean rhythms, became internationally popular in the 1980s. Among Brazil's writers of fiction, Machado de Assis stands out with his terse, ironic style. The son of a freed slave, Assis worked as a typesetter and journalist in 19th-century Rio. Brazil's most famous 20th-century writer is the regionalist Jorge Amado, whose tales are colorful romances of Bahia's people and places.

Get used to kissing strangers. For American's kissing anyone other than your SO or an immediate family Get used to unsolicited opinions. I noticed this more once i became pregnant in Brazil. Simply everyone has an opinion about what you should or shouldn't be doing during pregnancy. Whether it is about food, exercise , medication, what you need to buy for the baby, or how you should feel at any given moment. This is beyond annoying and at times overwhelming. Even people who have never even been pregnant, even MEN for that matter, has an opinion about you and your pregnancy. And once you have that bundle of joy snuggled up in your arms, FORGET about it. You thought the unsolicited opinions of people where bad during pregnancy, once you have that child the advise DOUBLES. It is quit easy to become frustrated when you have opinions coming at you from all angles, this is where the patience and open mindedness comes into play. Brazilians are only trying to be helpful. I found that if you just smile and nod your head even if you disagree you will survive the overload of nonsense.
