On April 21, 1500, Pedro Alvarez Cabral, a Portuguese explorer, accidentally discovered Brazil while trying to find a western route to the Indes. He first landed in modern-day Bahia. In this period in the Early Renaissance, Portugal and Spain were basically rivaling each other over who would get more land in the New World. Hearing of Columbus' failure in finding the Indes, but rather finding a New World, Cabral got excited. He set off from Portugal and headed Southwest, hoping he could reach the Indes by going a southerly directions. Like Columbus, he resulted in finding another part of the New World.

Brazil's name past in English has been:
    (1) Brasilia (the modern capital's name)
    (2) Brasil (modern Portuguese name)
    (3) Brazil (modern English name)
Brazil's past similar names all derived from the abundance of Brazilwood, a major export in Brazil's early history.

Just like British Georgia and Australia, Brazil was a place to where Portugal sent its criminals.

Brazilian History Beyond the Cultural Turn: Rethinking Elite and Subaltern in a Postcolonial Society
Date: December 13, 2006 Time: 6:00 – 7:30 PM Location: S-250 , 1730 Cambridge Street
The Boston Area Latin American History Workshop and the Harvard University Brazil Studies Program present:
Barbara Weinstein
Professor of History, University of Maryland and President-Elect of the American Historical Association Wednesday, December 13, 6:00 – 7:30 PM
David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies
1730 Cambridge Street, Second floor, S-250
A light dinner will be served before the presentation. There has been an explosion of historical research on post-colonial Brazil, by Brazilian and North American scholars, over the last two decades.  This presentation attempts to identify some themes and trends in this ever-expanding historiography. Particular emphasis is given to the impact of the "cultural turn" and the gradual shift toward seeing the political and cultural  relationship between Brazilian elites and popular classes as not merely one of subjugation and oppression, and historical agency as not always equivalent to resistance. This article is part of a series Indigenous peoples Colonial Brazil United Kingdom with Portugal ... e The history of Brazil begins with the arrival of the first indigenous peoples , over 8,000 years ago by crossing the Bering land bridge into Alaska and then entering the rest of North and Central America It is widely accepted that the European first to discover Brazil was Portuguese Pedro Álvares Cabral on April 22, 1500. From the 16th to the 19th centuries, Brazil was a colony of Portugal. On September 7, 1822, the country declared its independence from Portugal and became a constitutional monarchy, the Empire of Brazil . A military coup in 1889 established a republican government. The country has been nominally a federal republic ever since, except for two periods of overt dictatorship (1930–1934 and 1937–1945) and a period of military rule (1964–1985).

BRAZIL
History
T
he Portuguese were the first European settlers to arrive in the area, led by adventurous Pedro Cabral, who began the colonial period in 1500. The Portuguese reportedly found native Indians numbering around seven million. Most tribes were peripatetic, with only limited agriculture and temporary dwellings, although villages often had as many as 5000 inhabitants. Cultural life appears to have been richly developed, although both tribal warfare and cannibalism were ubiquitous. The few remaining traces of Brazil's Indian tribes reveal little of their lifestyle, unlike the evidence from other Andean tribes. Today, fewer than 200,000 of Brazil's indigenous people survive, most of whom inhabit the jungle areas.
Other Portuguese explorers followed Cabral, in search of valuable goods for European trade but also for unsettled land and the opportunity to escape poverty in Portugal itself. The only item of value they discovered was the pau do brasil (brazil wood tree) from which they created red dye. Unlike the colonizing philosophy of the Spanish, the Portuguese in Brazil were much less focused at first on conquering, controlling, and developing the country. Most were impoverished sailors, who were far more interested in profitable trade and subsistence agriculture than in territorial expansion. The country's interior remained unexplored.

Activity Three: Africans in Brazil
In this activity, you will read about Africans in Brazil. Several questions and activities follow the reading.
How did they get to Brazil?
Brazil's population includes the largest number of people of African descent in the entire Western Hemisphere. How did Africans get to Brazil, a country in South America ? As in Mexico and India, in Brazil, Africans were transported to the country as slaves. Here, slavery lasted longer than in any other country in the New World. When the Portuguese arrived in Brazil in 1500, 2 - 5 million indigenous Brazilians were living in the territory. To learn more about Portuguese colonization, click here . The Indians and the Portuguese battled for land, and the Indians resisted against the Portuguese as they tried to enslave them. The growing Portuguese presence in Brazil after 1530 brought with it more disease and caused an increase in the number of slave raids. Many of the Indians were killed and many others were forced to migrate into the interior of the country. What caused more Portuguese to come to Brazil around 1530? The Portuguese began to cultivate sugar and settle on the east coast of Brazil. The growing number of sugar plantations demanded more workers, and the Indian population had become smaller because many Indians had died. To deal with this labor shortage, the Portuguese began to import slaves from Africa into Brazil to work on the plantations.

    - During some centuries the actual territory of Brazil has been home of some hundreds of thousands of Indians, belonging to Tupi, Ge, Aruak, and Carib groups. Human territorial density was very low, and the concentration of power and the degree of organization was far under those attained by Incas or the Mayas. - April 22, 1500: Pedro Alvares Cabral, a Portuguese explorer, reached the coast of Brazil, at Porto Seguro, in Bahia, where they met the Pataxos Indians, the first tribe ever contacted by Europeans in South America. They still can be visited locally. - The name of Brazil is associated to the name of a particular tropical hard wood, explored by the first Portuguese. - Indian population was highly scattered in the territory. Calculations diverge substantially, ranging from 1 to 5 million. - The insufficient number of Indians (aggravated by diseases and warfare with colonialists) stimulated the Portuguese to the importation of African slaves.
