He was reelected in 1998, but his second term saw increased popular dissatisfaction with economic austerities and inequities, struggles in his four-party coalition, and legislative intransigence that hindered his effectiveness. Nonetheless his years in office saw the solidification of Brazilian democracy, a reduction of patronage in the government bureaucracy, improvements in education and rural health care, and the resettlement of nearly 600,000 landless peasant families.

History of Brazil The Native American peoples who were the original inhabitants of what is now Brazil included the Arawak and Carib groups in the north, the of the east coast and the Amazon River valley, the Ge of eastern and southern Brazil, and the Pano in the west. For the most part these groups were essentially seminomadic peoples, who subsisted by hunting and gathering and simple agriculture. Those groups in the more remote areas of the interior maintained their traditional way of life until the late 20th century, when their existence was threatened by the advancing frontier. See Native Americans European Exploration and Early Settlement Line of Demarcation also reached the coast of present-day Brazil and formally claimed the surrounding region in the name of Portugal. The territory was named Terra da Vera Cruz (Portuguese for "Land of the True Cross"). An expedition under the command of the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci was sent to Terra da Vera Cruz by the Portuguese government in 1501. In the course of his explorations Vespucci named many capes and bays, including a bay which he called Rio de Janeiro. He returned to Portugal with a cargo of brazilwood, and from that time forward Terra da Vera Cruz bore the name of the valuable wood Brazil. In 1530 the Portuguese king John III initiated a program of systematic Brazilian colonization. As a first step the king divided Brazil into 15 districts, or captaincies, and granted each of the districts, in perpetuity, to a person prominent at the Portuguese court. The grantees, known as

Brazilian History After Columbus reached America in 1492, the Portuguese and the Spanish agreed to divide the new world into two halves by an imaginary longitudinal line at 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands. According to this agreement every land found east of the imaginary line belonged to Portugal and west to Spain. The Portuguese navigator Pedro A. Cabral landed in Brazil on April 22nd, 1500. At that time there were numerous native populations all over South America. The indians living in Brazil, however, were not socially organized as, for example, the Incas in Peru. At the beginning, the European colonizers were only interested in quick profits. But as they didn't find anything, they began to exploit a red-colored wood from which dye was obtained. They called this wood 'pau-brasil' (Brazil-wood or literally blazing wood) and named the country after it. The extractive exploitation of this wood was Brazil's first economical cycle. Only when the profits of the commercialization of spices from India and the Western coast of Asia began to decrease the Portuguese turned their eyes to the new territory. A systematic accupation and exploration of it was set about, and pieces of land were donated to friends of the court. Later, a centralized government was nominated and the second economical cycle was initiated with the cultivation of sugar cane. Attempts were made to use the native indians as slaves in the plantations, but it wasn't too hard for them to run away, given that they knew the land better than the Europeans. Also, the catholic church was against the use of native indians as slaves, for they thought they could convert them. So African slaves were brought over to work in Brazil.

Brazilian history
Most native tribes who live and lived within Brazil's current borders are thought to descend from the first wave of migrants from North Asia that crossed the Bering Land Bridge at the end of the last Ice Age around 9000 BC. In 1500 AD, the territory of modern Brazil had an estimated total population of nearly 3 million Amerindians divided in 2,000 nations and tribes. Initially Portugal had little interest in Brazil, mainly because of high profits gained through commerce with India, Indochina, China and Japan. Brazil's only economical exploitation was the pursuit of brazilwood for its treasured red dye. After 1530, the Portuguese Crown devised the Hereditary Captaincies system to effectively occupy its new colony, and later took direct control of the failed captaincies. Although temporary trading posts were established earlier to collect brazilwood, used as a dye, with permanent settlement came the establishment of the sugarcane industry and its intensive labor. Several early settlements were founded across the coast, among them the colonial capital, Salvador, established in 1549 at the Bay of All Saints in the north, and the city of Rio de Janeiro on March 1567, in the south. The Portuguese colonists adopted an economy based on the production of agricultural goods that were exported to Europe. Sugar became by far the most important Brazilian colonial product until the early 18th century.Even though Brazilian sugar was reputed as being of high quality, the industry faced a crisis during the 17th and 18th centuries when the Dutch and the French started producing sugar in the Antilles, located much closer to Europe, causing sugar prices to fall.

Booms and Busts in Brazilian History
Brazil's economic history, as least up until recent times, has been characterized by a pattern of booms and busts; i.e.,
Sugar
The sugar industry was established in northeast Brazil in the 16th century and it brought great prosperity to the region until competing sources of sugar were created in the Caribbean by the French (Haiti) and the British (Jamaica) in the eighteenth century. The sugar industry consisted of sugarcane plantations and plants for processing the sugarcane into sugar. The sugarcane plantations were worked by slaves brought from the Portuguese-controlled areas of southern Africa (Angola and Mozambique). Most of the prosperity of the sugar boom went for imported luxuries for the plantation owners. One element of the ostentatiousness of the wealthy was that they shipped their dirty laundry to Portugal rather than having it done locally. Thus the wealth of the sugar industry was concentrated in the hands of the elite and very little spread to the rest of the economy. After the end of slavery the seasonality of sugar growing and processing created special problems. The large labor force that was necessary to plant and harvest the sugar cane was largely idle and destitute through much of the year. Sugar cane growing also required the land to be left fallow at frequent intervals. Thus in the sugar cane areas there was a great deal of idle resources.
