Breast Cancer Most women share a common fear: developing breast cancer. This is not an unfounded fear when considering that, except for lung cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women, accounting for one of every three diagnoses. However, men are also affected by breast cancer. In 2002 the American Cancer Association estimate that 1500 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 400 will die as a result. In 2001 an estimated 192,200 American women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 39,600 women died of the disease (The American Cancer Association). In 2004 an estimated 203,500 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in America. WHAT IS BREAST CANCER? Cancer cells have the ability to leave the original tumor site, travel to distant locations, and recolonize. This process is called metastasis and it occurs in organs such as the liver, lungs, and bones. Both the bloodstream and lymphatic system (the network connecting lymph nodes throughout the body) serve as ideal vehicles for the traveling cancer. Although, these traveling cancer cells do not always survive beyond the tumor, if they do survive, the cancer cells will again begin to divide abnormally and will create tumors in each new location. A person with untreated or treatment-resistant cancer may eventually die of the disease if vital organs such as the liver or lungs are invaded, overtaken, and destroyed.

Information, Symptoms, Treatments and Resources
Overview Information Treatments Posts ... Health Videos Table of contents Next Definition Breast cancer is a cancer that starts in the tissues of the breast. There are two main types of breast cancer:
  • Ductal carcinoma starts in the tubes (ducts) that move milk from the breast to the nipple. Most breast cancers are of this type. Lobular carcinoma starts in parts of the breast, called lobules, that produce milk.
In rare cases, breast cancer can start in other areas of the breast. Many breast cancers are sensitive to the hormone estrogen. This means that estrogen causes the breast cancer tumor to grow. Such cancer is called estrogen receptor positive cancer or ER positive cancer. Some women have what's called HER2-positive breast cancer. HER2 refers to a gene that helps cells grow, divide, and repair themselves. When cells have too many copies of this gene, cells including cancer cells grow faster. Experts think that women with HER2-positive breast cancer have a more aggressive disease and a higher risk of recurrence than those who do not have this type. Alternative Names Cancer - breast; Carcinoma - ductal; Carcinoma - lobular

    What is it?
    Overview What Is It?
Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancerous) cells are found in breast tissues. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, other than skin cancer, and the second deadliest cancer in U.S. women; lung cancer is the deadliest. Approximately 182,460 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2008, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Though an estimated 40,480 women will die from breast cancer, there are about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S., according to the ACS. Fortunately, the number of deaths caused by breast cancer has declined significantly in recent years, with the largest decreases in younger women—both Caucasian and African American. These decreases are probably the result of earlier detection and improved treatment.

I am a nurse with breast cancer
November 6th 2003, letter arrives, time for a routine mamogram, should I bother, examine my breasts once a month, nothing.
Oh well not got anything better to do.
Had mamogram. Forgot it.
Phone call, can you come back for second part of mamogram. WHAT! Rang, why, nothing to worry about probably films not good.
Whoops next day letter confirming they need more tests, at the end says bring a partner or friend with you. Dont like the sound of that. Dont tell husband, dont want to needlessly worry him.
Very strange that night over dinner he asks "had your results from mammogram?"Extra sensory perception ? Tell him. I'm coming with you he says, OK but nothing to worry about. Next day went to Breast care centre, showed what appeared to be a growth in my right breast. Three core biopsys taken, Dr. thinks it is cancer. Don't think so, even when they showed me still couldn't feel it. I'm a nurse I would know. 1 week later see consultant, yes its the "BIG C", could have spread to my lymph nodes, not certain if its invasive. Puts me on the waiting list, do I want just the growth removed, come back later if necessay and have lymph nodes out, or have section on table and if invasive take them out at the same time. Think the 2nd option best. Wait to hear when date is set.

Light-to-moderate drinking appears to have little effect on the risk for breast cancer
  • The relationship between alcohol consumption and breast cancer remains complicated.
  • A new study confirms earlier findings that heavy drinking increases risk for breast cancer, in this case, predominantly among premenopausal women.
  • This risk exists independent of alcohol type (beer, wine or spirits).
  • Light-to-moderate drinking appears to have little effect on a woman's risk for breast cancer.
In an effort to clarify the relationship between alcohol consumption and the risk of developing breast cancer, a study in the July issue of examines the influence of alcohol intake and type of beverage (beer, wine or spirits) on breast cancer in relation to menopausal status. Findings support previous research showing that heavy drinking increases risk for breast cancer, predominantly among premenopausal women; however, this risk exists independent of alcohol type. Light-to-moderate drinking appears to have little effect on a woman's risk for breast cancer. "For a number of years, it has been known that a high alcohol intake implies an increased risk of breast cancer," said Morten Grønbæk, professor of alcohol research at the Centre for Alcohol Research at the National Institute of Public Health in Denmark. "The ongoing discussion has been whether or not there is an increased risk among light-to-moderate drinkers as well."
