    Bird Breeding
The first eggs are usually laid the day after the breeding pair completes the nest. Eggs may be laid daily or on alternate days, even up to five day intervals depending on the species. For the breeding of birds to be successful, the eggs must be incubated. The parents transmit heat to the eggs by means of brood spots (bare patches on underbelly with many blood vessels). Eggs are turned as often as 12 times an hour and incubation periods vary according to species. When they hatch, some chicks are completely dependent on their parents, these are called altritial. Others are able to run and feed themselves immediately, and these are called precocial. The basic concepts discussed above also apply to breeding birds in captivity. For example, when breeding love birds it is important that they receive the correct amount of sunlight so as to stimulate breeding. Breeding love birds can be done in aviaries or individually in bird breeding cages. Bird breeding cages must have enough space for the birds to move around comfortably and continue with normal behaviour. Ensure that breeding pairs are fed properly so that they remain in good condition and that the eggs will not have defects. Once the young hatch, they too require suitable nutrition. Breeding, whether in captivity or in the wild, is vital for the continuation of bird species and our continued pleasure in these beautiful feathered creatures.

The Welfare of Breeding Birds
The bird breeder's primary tool is the power of observation. Both the permanent staff, whether it consists of employees or family members, and any temporary workers need guidelines to be sure all the birds' needs are taken care of and no indications of problems are overlooked. The bird breeder is keenly aware of the need for sanitary conditions and proper handling of animals. Protocols vary according to the physical facility, the climate, the types of birds being kept and preferences for ease of work. Basic feeding and watering routines are usually simple to follow, but perpetual attentiveness to upkeep and details is equally important. If one part of the system fails, especially if the owner is incapacitated, conditions can quickly get out of hand. If it is necessary to rely on a supporting staff during times of absence, they should receive training which includes the fundaments behind the owner's choices so that mistakes are not made in his or her absence.
Aviary Structures and Layout
The outdoor aviary with suspended breeding flights has many advantages, especially for ease of caretaking. Sunlight is a natural sanitizer which also provides a source of vitamin D3, a vitamin which birds do not manufacture without UV rays. Rain gives the birds the incentive to bathe, cleans perches and keeps dust at a minimum. Breezes refresh. In warm to tropical climates, if adequate shade is supplied, the birds will be able to maintain proper body temperature as long as water is supplied. A more enclosed area, containing the nest box, may be added in cooler climates, or the nest box itself may suffice to keep the birds warm.

Breeding birds introduction:
March-July Many breeding species are restricted to unique habitats along the Trail. Only in mature Longleaf Pine can you see the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker. Although expanding its breeding area, Mottled Duck has a fairly restricted range along the Gulf Coast. Some birds, less common elsewhere, are easy to find in Louisiana. Our state bird the Brown Pelican, extirpated from Louisiana as a breeding bird, has rebounded and now commonly breeds on several barrier islands. Bottomland hardwoods support a number of interesting breeding species, including the Neotropical migrant raptors Swallow-tailed and Mississippi kites, and Broad-winged Hawk. These join resident Red-shouldered Hawks to nest in or just below the treetops of the forest. Woods are alive with the songs of nesting Neotropical migrants and resident breeding birds. Songs of Northern Parula or Yellow-throated Warbler originate from Spanish moss-draped trees where resident Barred Owls roost and are often easy to locate during the day. Impressive egret and heron rookeries and concentrations of colorful roadside songbirds such as Painted and Indigo buntings and Dickcissels await those traversing the WETLAND Birding Trail. Note: You can see the distribution of breeding birds on the Louisiana Breeding Bird Altas website at http://www.manybirds.com/atlas/atlas.htm.

Breeding Birds of the Platte River Valley
of Nebraska
Craig A. Faanes , U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
and
Gary R. Lingle , Platte River Whooping Crane Trust The Platte River Valley in central Nebraska is known throughout North America for its concentrations of sandhill cranes and waterfowl during spring migration. Fully three-quarters of the world's population of lesser sandhill cranes, nearly all of the Central Flyway population of greater white-fronted goose, and over one million Canada geese spend most of the period from mid-February to early April along the Platte River. The yearly spectacle makes the Platte River a birdwatcher's paradise. The main objective of this study was to determine the numbers and kinds of bird species nesting in the area, their populations, habitat preferences, and the geographical distribution of each species across the area. Included are information about species status (including nests, fledglings, and nesting attempts), distribution, habitat use during the breeding season, the effect of habitat alteration on species distribution and abundance. From 1981 through 1986, the State of New York was divided into about 1300 blocks, 5 x5 km. in area, and each was surveyed for breeding species. This was the first breeding bird survey in New York history. The results were published in a book, The Atlas of Breeding Birds in New York State . During that survey period, despite a lack of coverage in many remote areas of the town, Otselic emerged as one of the richest breeding bird areas in the state. In addition, many species found breeding here are outside their "normal" breeding areas. For example, the White-Winged Crossbill was never known to breed outside the Adirondacks in New York State until 1985-6 when young were found in Spruce forest on the Ridge Road. Each bird species must nest in a particular habitat. While the requirements of some birds, such as the Robin, are very broad and they can nest almost anywhere, most have very narrow requirements. For example, the Louisiana Waterthrush , a Warbler that comes here from South America, can only breed in forested gorges with fast flowing mountain brooks. In Otselic, these birds breed at Buck's Brook, Thompson Brook, and Gorge Brook. They can't nest anywhere else. In most areas, these gorges and ravines have been filled, bulldozed, and cleared so the

Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Tennessee
Charles P. Nicholson
This atlas provides ornithologists, ecologists, and birdwatchers with an invaluable resource for monitoring birds within the state. It offers the first fully documented account of distribution patterns for 170 species confirmed as breeding in Tennessee, as well as for several unconfirmed or extirpated species. The species list includes permanent residents, short-distance migrants, neotropical migrants, and endangered species. Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Tennessee is based on research conducted from 1986 through 1991 by the Tennessee Ornithological Society and is the first study of its kind ever published for the state. It reviews the methodology employed in the study, which included innovative miniroute censuses. It features detailed accounts of individual species which include both grid maps that plot their distribution and contour maps that reflect their relative abundance. The accompanying text for each species discusses its geographical and historical occurence, cites habitat preferences, and offers notes on breeding biology such as nest placement and clutch size. Line drawings accurately portray the birds in the nesting cycle. In addition to this wealth of data on individual species, the atlas provides background information on the physical and cultural geography of Tennessee and on patterns of land-use change that followed the arrival of European settlers. It also presents the most comprehensive history of ornithology in the state yet published.
