the Electronic Clocking System! Sampson Brothers is actually a father and son team. For many years it was John alone, then John flew partners with his cousin Bob Sampson, present day it is John and his son David. John has three sons but only David has shown great interest in the pigeons. Although John’s success was always on a Champion level since 1967, many feel the present day team with his son has brought them to their highest level. They are considered o ne of the best racing/breeding lofts in all America today. Every year they have many visitors from Europe, Asia and other parts of the World to see the pigeons that have made Sampson Brothers World famous. Photo:

Ni ck Bolgiano The most extensive bird study in Rothrock State Forest has been the three Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) routes begun in 1992-93 by Greg Grove and the Special Area Project (SAP) trips to selected places by Greg and the author. Greg has continued to run two of the routes each year, namely the Rothrock State Forest and Broad Mountain routes, while the author took over the Tussey Mountain route in 1999. Each route covers 24.5 miles of state forest road, with 50 stops one-half mile apart. These are run once a year, usually in early June. All birds observed within a three-minute period are noted. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service assesses the status of North American birds from data collected on approximately 2000 routes. Eighty-eight species have been observed on the BBS routes, though four are probably not breeders. Another eleven species probably breed here in small numbers, for a total of about 95 breeders. The most common breeding birds are typical of central Pennsylvania. Red-eyed Vireo and Ovenbird , which together comprise about one in three breeding birds, can be found almost anywhere in the state forest.

Ontario Programs of Bird Studies Canada Main Page
B ird Studies Canada, and formerly Long Point Bird Observatory has been running Ontario-wide programs for many years, beginning with the Ontario Bird Feeder Survey, launched in 1976, which later became the continental Project FeederWatch program. The Canadian Lakes Loon Survey also had its beginnings in Ontario. We ran the Great Lakes Beached Bird Survey for several years in the early 1980s; this international program was designed to provide us with information on the numbers, species and distributions of birds found dead along shorelines throughout the Great Lakes. At about the same time, we launched the Ontario Heronry Inventory, which is still repeated every 10 years. A Great Lakes Colonial Bird Registry was later conducted. Together with the Federation of Ontario Naturalists , we launched the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas project (1981-85), which then evolved into the Ontario Rare Breeding Bird Program, and which has in turn continued as the Ontario Birds At Risk program. Other current projects in Ontario include the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program, the Nocturnal Owl Survey. Wherever possible, Ontario projects have a large, and very important, volunteer component.

Many of the aquatic birds, especially in the heron/egret order (Ciconiiformes) undergo startling color changes as breeding season approaches. There are rookeries of many species around the edges of the flow-way, and some great blue herons were on nests as early as January. Others begin later. But in most species, breeding is not only accompanied by changes in plumage, but by the development of often brilliant colors on exposed areas of skin, especially on the legs and around the eyes and bill. This is a cattle egret in breeding plumage. The buffy feathers on the head, chest and back are only present in the spring, and the bright violet skin around the eyes and base of the bill is a striking change. Below are two shots of another common bird, the anhinga. On the left is a typical looking bird in a typical looking posture. On the right is a female in breeding plumage - the bright blue-green around her eyes is only present for a fairly brief period, but is amazing when seen well. White ibis are spectacular in all seasons, but as breeding season nears the reds of their beak, the hues of their head and feet become incredibly vivid and saturated. The birds below were shot as they jousted for position on what was obviously a preferred perch.

Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
Avian Use of Forest Habitats in the Pembina Hills of Northeastern North Dakota
Craig A. Faanes and Jonathan M. Andrew Abstract: North Dakota has the least extensive total area of forested habitats of any of the 50 United States. Although occurring in limited area, forest communities add considerably to the total ecological diversity of the State. The forests of the Pembina Hills region in northeastern North Dakota are one of only three areas large enough to be considered of commercial value. During 1981 we studied the avifauna of the upper valley of the Pembina River in the Pembina Hills. Field work extended from 20 April to 23 July; breeding bird censuses were conducted 7 June to 2 July. Of the 120 bird species recorded during the study period, 79 species were recorded during the breeding season. The total breeding population was estimated at nearly 76,000 breeding pairs. The wood warblers (Parulidae) were the most numerous family, accounting for about 28,000 breeding pairs. The yellow warbler ( Dendroica petechia ) was the most abundant breeding species, making up 19.4% of the population. American redstart (

    Obtaining the atlas data:
Associated with the atlas is the underlying database from which the distribution maps are derived. Over the past 10 years, the atlas data has been used by a wide variety of researchers and conservationists for purposes ranging from estimating hotspots of species occurrence to predicting the effects of climate change. Use of the data is administered via the EBCC Executive Committee and the data extraction and handling is currently done by staff at SOVON in the Netherlands or the BTO in the UK, according to agreed rules. There are countless possibilities for using this valuable dataset, and those interested should contact the EBCC Chair EBCC-chairman about the conditions for obtaining the data. Requests will be reviewed by the Executive Committee and there are usually costs for its provision and to cover data handling. EBCC Atlas of European Breeding Birds data are now available in UTM or GIS-format.

Don and I have been breeding birds since 1980. As you can see, I have been a bird lover for a really long time. This picture was taken in 1953! We work hard to do things right and consider it a labor of love since we enjoy them so much. We started exhibiting at bird shows in 1984..took seven out of ten on the top bench, including Best in Show, at that first show, and don't you know we were hooked.
We took many years to accumulate our breeding stock, selecting only the very best of each species. As a result our babies are of excellent quality. We never breed two birds just to produce more.. the goal is always to improve on their beauty and confirmation. I serve the hobby as an American Cockatiel Society Panel Judge. We breed many species of exotics including African Greys, Conures, Pionus, Cockatoos, Macaws, Quakers, Ringnecks and Amazons. Please check out our baby birds for sale. .you may find we have just the bird you are looking for. This list is updated frequently.
Over the years I have published ten different booklets on birds.
