British Columbia Government Plans to Revise Family Law
The British Columbia government has plans to make what the Vancouver Sun calls “revolutionary changes” to family law in the province. These changes will better reflect modern society, to update the Family Relations Act that was passed 30 years ago. The government’s proposal will revise the legal definition of a parent, and it will update property rules, children’s interests in parenting disputes, and even the terms that come with family legal issues, like “custody,” “access” and “guardianship.” The proposed revisions will also look to change the nature of the separation process, rendering it less adversarial than it is now. The hope is that these revisions will make it easier for couples to find solutions to problems out of court. Such issues that they would like to move out of the courtroom would be matters like child custody and division of assets. Vancouver lawyer Georgialee Lang had strong feelings about the proposed changes. “This is groundbreaking, absolutely groundbreaking,” she told the Vancouver Sun. “I think they’ve done a very comprehensive job.” She also said that herself and many other lawyers have wanted revisions like these for a long time.

British Columbia government slashes corporate taxes, breaks strikes
      By Keith Jones
4 August 2001 British Columbia’s newly elected Liberal government is pressing forward with the implementation of its aggressive, anti-working-class agenda. Just days after presenting a Throne Speech that baldly declared, “Our province is under new management that believes in competition and embraces the principle of profit,” the Liberals tabled a mini-budget Monday that slashes corporate taxes by close to $250 million this year and more than $600 million next year. In all, the Liberals are cutting or outright eliminating seven corporate taxes. Manufacturers and resource companies are henceforth exempt from having to pay provincial sales tax on new machinery and equipment, the corporate capital tax is to be phased out over two years, and effective January 1, 2002 the income tax rate for corporations will be cut by three percentage points to 13.5 percent. Needless to say, big business has hailed the tax cuts. The president of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, John Winter, said that the Liberals have delivered the “big bang” for which corporate B.C. has been hoping. “Most governments in Canada phased in their tax cuts,” enthused Jock Finlayson of the Business Council of B.C. “This government has fast-tracked” them, he said.

British Columbia Government Review Confirms Pioneer Grace Property Condemned and Supports NovaGold's Development at Galore Creek Project
      Market Wire October, 2006
NovaGold Resources Inc. (TSX: NG)(AMEX: NG) announced today that the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources concurs that NovaGold's drilling on the Grace Property over the past 3 years is sufficient to confirm that there is no economic mineralization in the area of the Grace claims proposed to be used for a tailings and waste storage facility for NovaGold's Galore Creek project. The Ministry's memorandum, dated September 26, 2006, states that: "The results of exploration and geotechnical drilling on the Grace claims have been summarized in a report prepared for NovaGold... The ministry has reviewed this report and concurs that sufficient condemnation work has been done to extinguish the probability of an economic mineral resource underlying the area of the proposed tailings facility." "NovaGold is pleased that the B.C. Government concurs with our conclusions on the Pioneer claims based on our reports on the condemnation drill results," said Rick Van Nieuwenhuyse, President and CEO of NovaGold. "We continue to advance our Galore Creek project, with the Feasibility Study due to be completed on schedule this quarter. We believe that the permitting process is proceeding well and that we are on track to meet our objective to make a construction decision immediately following receipt of all necessary permits by spring of 2007."
