British Columbia History
The Fascinating History
of Vancouver Island
British Columbia history, for Vancouver Island seems to have started in a mist, which is quite appropriate for the west coast of Canada. It’s a “mist” because there is a great deal of uncertainty about any starting point. When the ice age withdrew, about 8 000 years ago, humans arrived. Who was first seems to be debatable. Explorers from Japan arrived very early on, as did Chinese Priests and at least one Buddhist Monk (about 499 A.D.) On the other hand there are large stone figures and petroglyphs on the east and north-east coast which pre-date the present First Nations that were forming settlements on the island during the 1700’s.
March 25th 2008:
An article in the local newspaper (Vancouver Sun) points to a series of discoveries on Vancouver Island, of bison bones, suggesting the existance of food for ice-age hunters as early as 14 000 years ago. Fourteen separate finds of this ancestor of the plains buffalo, include bones that appear to have been "butchered" by humans, which suggested west coast shoreline hunters, who were seafarers, probably from Siberia, coming across the Bering Strait.

Culture The culture of British Columbia is extremely varied, ranging from Aboriginal to European roots. British Columbia holds the largest Asian population in Canada, and you will find many cultures to celebrate.
History The modern history of British Columbia begins with the First Nations people who have lived and flourished on the lush natural resources of these lands for over ten thousand years, since some time after the end of the last Ice Age.
There are three prominent First Nations groups of the Pacific Northwest who have divided the land between themselves for thousands of years: the Nootka, the Coast Salish, and the Kwak'wala Speaking Peoples. The rich land and marine resources enabled them to develop complex societies and the intricate aboriginal art forms that are now internationally acclaimed. To the east, in the region now known as the British Columbia Rockies, the Kootenay were the original keepers of the land, having fought fiercely for possession of the precious hot springs found in these mountains. The Carrier nation roamed the interior valleys, the Tsimshians ranged the northern coast, and the Tlingits occupied southern Alaska and northern British Columbia. The Sekani and Beaver occupied the eastern region of the north while the Haida lived on the Queen Charlotte Islands.

Home Welcome to the British Columbia History of Nursing!
In 1989 interested registered nurses banded together and formed the BC History of Nursing Professional Practice Group under the umbrella of the Registered Nurses Association of BC (now the College of Registered Nurses of BC.) The mission of the founders was to discover, disseminate, and preserve BC's nursing history. In 2008 the organization became registered under the Society Act of British Columbia and is now known as the BC History of Nursing Society (BCHNS). The current Society members are mainly B.C. registered nurses and nursing students, but also include interested historians, researchers, registered nurses and nursing students from across Canada. Current Events and Newsletter sections are regularly updated to keep members abreast of news and events. The Archives section contains a wealth of information on nursing, such as historical documents (photographs, letters and diaries) and information on specific nurses and nursing organizations, as well as selected nursing artifacts, books relevant to nursing, and memorial and dedication pages to nurses who have made significant contributions to nursing in British Columbia. Note Cards are for sale to raise funds for Scholarships and for the Archives.
