Cover photograph showing the sternwheeler 'Nasookin' almost at the Gray Creek wharf in about 1942. Since I usually travel by bus, I love this quirky British Columbian image! Just imagine how exacting those bus drivers must have been to 'balance' the bus just right every time so it would fit. British Columbia History , published quarterly by the BC Historical Federation (BCHF), Spring 2010, Special Transportation issue, Volume 43, Number 1.
Here I am at the British Columbia Historical Federation's annual conference. And right now I'm at the Book Fair which is open to the public today.
Available here is British Columbia History , the BC Historical Federation's journal, which is available to individual subscribers, or on some newstands, and at events like the BCHF Book Fair. British Columbia History is an excellent journal - if you have an interest in British Columbia's history and/or British Columbia families, you should be reading this regularly and checking back issues for articles of interest.
One of the most exciting things to happen recently in BC history and genealogy is the announcement that earlier issues of British Columbia History are now available free on-line.

About Historica Fairs The BC Historica Fairs Program is an educational initiative of the Historica Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to helping Canadians discover the fascinating stories that make our country unique. Since its beginnning in 1993, the Fairs Program has grown to include more than 300,000 students across Canada each year. We invite you to discover your place in history at www.histori.ca The Historica Fairs Program:
  • celebrates cultural diversity and multiple perspectives
  • reveals connections between past and present
  • inspires Canadians to celebrate their place in history
  • creates an environment where students are excited to learn and share
  • provides recognition for student achievement
Organization The Fairs Program is typically divided into three components. There are Class and School Fairs that take place between February and April, the Regional Fairs during the second week of May; and the National Fair/Camp hosted each July by a different community in Canada. Each regional Fair selects one or two students in Grades 4 to 9 (fifteen students across the province) to represent BC at the National Historica Fair.

Early British Columbia History
The Chung Collection traces the history of the province of British Columbia from the first voyages of discovery by Europeans to the North Pacific, made by Spanish explorers as early as 1542. More than 200 years later, interest in land possession and fur trade intensified exploration and many voyages were made by Russian, Spanish, French, and British explorers. The British eventually established possession of the coast, and Fort Victoria was established on Vancouver Island. Travel narratives of explorers such as James Cook, George Vancouver, Dionisio Galiano, Ivan Kruzenshtern and Etienne Marchand show the international nature of our province's history.
Historical documents, photographs, books, maps and pamphlets illustrate British Columbia's political, social and cultural history. The scope of these documents include everything from 18th-century documents and books to tourism brochures from the 1950's and 60's. The collection includes archival records related to the explosion of the S.S. Greenhill Park in the Port of Vancouver in 1945. Another highlight of the collection includes Order in council constituting the Supreme Court of Civil Justice of Vancouver Island (1858), thought to be the first book published in B.C.

Captain James Cook first made contact with the area now known as British Columbia in 1778. The colonists who followed soon realized they needed a written history, both to justify their dispossession of Aboriginal peoples and to formulate an identity for a new settler society. Writing British Columbia History traces how Euro-Canadian historians took up this task, and struggled with the newness of colonial society and overlapping ties to the British Empire, the United States, and Canada. This exploration of the role of history writing in colonialism and nation building will appeal to anyone interested in the history of British Columbia, the Pacific Northwest, and history writing in Canada.
Chad Reimer is an independent historian and author in Chilliwack, BC.
