From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search British literature refers to literature associated with the United Kingdom Isle of Man Channel Islands , as well as to literature from England Ireland Scotland and Wales , prior to the formation of the UK. By far the largest part of British literature is written in the English language , but there are bodies of written works in Latin Welsh Scottish Gaelic Scots ... Guernésiais and other languages. Northern Ireland has a literary tradition in English, Ulster Scots and Irish . Irish writers have also played an important part in the development of English-language literature. Literature in the Celtic languages of the islands is the oldest surviving vernacular literature in Europe . The Welsh literary tradition stretches from the 6th century to the 21st century. The oldest Welsh literature does not belong to the territory we know as Wales today, but rather to northern England and southern Scotland . But though it is dated to be from the 6th, 7th, and 8th centuries, it has survived only in 13th- and 14th-century manuscript copies.

Both Lassner and Schneider are American scholars who have joined a growing number of predominantly British academics whose research challenges the idea that British literature of the 1930s and 1940s was paralyzed by history, undermined by politics, and doomed to obscurity. Readers who have been eagerly following developments in this field may be tempted to compare Lassner's study to Jenny Hartley's survey, Millions Like Us: British Women's Fiction of the Second World War (London: Virago, 1997), and compare Schneider's study to Gill Plain's readings in Women's Fiction of the Second World War (New York: St. Martin's, 1996), but they will quickly discover that any similarities between these books are structural rather than substantive. Eponymophilia in rheumatology
An eponym is the name of a drug structure or a disease based on or derived from the name of a person. Eponyms are widely used in medicine to denote both specific disease states and to honour those who discovered, described or best characterized them. Despite the attempts of some editors and medical schools to rationalize medical terminology and expunge many eponyms, eponymophilia lives on, mainly for reasons of convenience and, as many medical students suspect, to serve as a means by which one can either shine on rounds or be shamed by not knowing an eponym important to the consultant. The enthusiasm for particular eponyms has waxed and waned over time. Increasing medical knowledge and changes in classification have made some of them obsolete while new eponyms continue to appear. Political events have influenced the use of some eponyms while others just fell out of fashion. A few examples of eponyms’ use and abuse in rheumatology will serve to make the point that eponyms are often misapplied and falsely attributed. Some of them tend to excessively honour the eponymee while others appear quite simply arcane. Some eponyms are tendential and fraught with political or even jingoistic context. To make matters more complicated, eponyms are inconsistently applied across regions, countries and medical specialties, and some diseases have been linked to more than one name.

Author Profiles Background Articles ... About Us Twentieth century Black British literature by West Indian authors has its beginnings with the arrival of the SS Empire Windrush in 1945. With a small immigrant population agreeing to work menial jobs, Britain witnessed a phenomenal growth of a first generation West Indian population. It is the children of these immigrants that we refer to as the Black British generation. Black British writing was then born out of the struggles and dislocation of this new generation of British citizens.
