Historians believe there was a forerunner to the present Brunei Sultanate, which the Chinese called Po-ni. Chinese and Arabic records indicate that this ancient trading kingdom existed at the mouth of the Brunei River as early as the seventh or eighth century A.D. This early kingdom was apparently conquered by the Sumatran Hindu Empire of Srivijaya in the early ninth century, which later controlled northern Borneo and the Philippines. It was subjugated briefly by the Java-based Majapahit Empire but soon regained its independence and once again rose to prominence.
The Brunei Empire had its golden age from the 15th to the 17th centuries, when its control extended over the entire island of Borneo and north into the Philippines. Brunei was particularly powerful under the fifth sultan, Bolkiah (1473-1521), who was famed for his sea exploits and even briefly captured Manila; and under the ninth sultan, Hassan (1605-19), who fully developed an elaborate Royal Court structure, elements of which remain today.
After Sultan Hassan, Brunei entered a period of decline due to internal battles over royal succession as well as the rising influences of European colonial powers in the region that, among other things, disrupted traditional trading patterns, destroying the economic base of Brunei and many other Southeast Asian sultanates. In 1839, the English adventurer James Brooke arrived in Borneo and helped the Sultan put down a rebellion. As a reward, he became governor and later "Rajah" of Sarawak in northwest Borneo and gradually expanded the territory under his control.

Wednesday, July 11, 2007 FROM the 14th to the 16th centuries Brunei Darussalam was the seat of a powerful sultanate extending over Sabah, Sarawak and the lower Philippines.
Thus, the current Sultan represents one of the oldest continuously ruling dynasties in the world.
By the 19th century, the Brunei Darussalam Empire had been whittled away by wars, piracy and the colonial expansion of European powers.
In 1847, the sultan concluded a treaty with Great Britain and in 1888 Brunei Darussalam officially became a British protectorate.
In 1906, the Residential System was established in Brunei Darussalam. A British Resident was nominated as a representative of the British government to advise the sultan in all matters except Malay customs, traditions and Islamic religion.
The 1959 agreement established a written constitution which gave Brunei Darussalam internal self-government. In 1971, the agreement was amended and revised to assert full internal independence except defence and external affairs.
In 1967, His Highness Sultan Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien abdicated in favour of his son Pengiran Muda Mahkota Hassanal Bolkiah. On January 1, 1984, Brunei Darussalam resumed full independence. Now, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam sits as the Prime Minister, Finance Minister, Home Affairs Minister, and Defense Minister. Later, there was a brief war with Spain , in which Brunei was victorious. The decline of the Bruneian Empire culminated in the nineteenth century when Brunei lost much of its territory to the White Rajahs of Sarawak , resulting in its current small landmass and separation into two parts. Brunei - History
Brunei and Borneo were among early the European references to the state and the island.
The Brunei ruling dynasty descends from the 1360s when Awang Alak Betatar became the first Brunei ruler and the present ruler is his direct descendant.
Awang Alak Betatar was the first Brunei Raja to accept Islam, and changed his name to Sultan Muhammad Shah (1363-1402) in honour of the Prophet. With the advent of Islam, Brunei’s trade and territories grew in line with the spread of Islam to encompass existing Malay kingdoms in Borneo and the Philippines.
A golden age dawned with the reign of the fifth sultan, Nakhoda Ragam who was an avid adventurer. His seafaring took him to Java, Malacca and the Philippines. His rule extended over the Sultanates of Sambas, Pontianak, Banjarmasin, Pasi Kotei, Balongan, the Sulu Archipelago, and Islands of Balabac, Banggi, Balambangan and Palawan. Strong trade and royal relationships were established with China during the reign of the first and second sultans until about 1425.
Sultan Bolkiah, whose conquests covered the whole of Borneo and as far north as Luzon in the Philippine Islands, where he initiated the spread of Islam, succeeded Sultan Sulaiman. He was known as Nakhoda Ragam. His queen was known as Puteri Laila Menchanai.

    Brunei History Books
On this Sunday, I thought I will talk about history books of Brunei. Someone mentioned the Hussainmiya book on my post on the History Centre's publication Jurnal Darussalam
Hussainmiya wrote three books so far, one is a semi-autobiography of our 28th Sultan, Sultan Haji Omarali Saifuddin published in 1995 entitled " Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin III and Britain: The Making of Brunei Darussalam ", the second entitled " The Brunei Constitution: An Inside History " published in 2000 and the very recent one entitled " Brunei: A Revival of 1906 " on the issue of the 1906 Agreement between Brunei and the British. For those who do not have prior or little knowledge of Brunei history, the books are well written and will give you all you need to know about what happened since 1906. However I would term the books more on the line of what is termed by Graham Sauders, now a Professor at Hull University but used to be a History teacher in Brunei, 'the official Brunei history'. You will not learn much things new from Hussainmiya's books apart from what has been officially written despite the very detailed explanation. Bottom line, I enjoyed his books but I do wish for a far more critical and independent assessments.
There are many other historians who have written books, though the focus tended to be more on the MIB side of things rather than the pure history. For a sampling of other history writings, you can get various takes written by other historians which I have put up on the
