Brunei : History
Historians believe there was a forerunner to the present Brunei Sultanate, which the Chinese called Po-ni. Chinese and Arabic records indicate that this ancient trading kingdom existed at the mouth of the Brunei River as early as the seventh or eighth century A.D. This early kingdom was apparently conquered by the Sumatran Hindu Empire of Srivijaya in the early ninth century, which later controlled northern Borneo and the Philippines. It was subjugated briefly by the Java-based Majapahit Empire but soon regained its independence and once again rose to prominence. The Brunei Empire had its golden age from the 15th to the 17th centuries, when its control extended over the entire island of Borneo and north into the Philippines. Brunei was particularly powerful under the fifth sultan, Bolkiah (1473-1521), who was famed for his sea exploits and even briefly captured Manila; and under the ninth sultan, Hassan (1605-19), who fully developed an elaborate Royal Court structure, elements of which remain today.

Historians believe there was a antecedent to the present Brunei Sultanate. Chinese records suggest that this ancient trading kingdom existed at the mouth of the Brunei River as early as the 7th century A.D. It was defeated briefly by the Java-based Majapahit Empire but soon regained its freedom and once again rose to prominence. In 1967, Sultan Omar renounced in favor of his eldest son, Hassanal Bolkiah, who became the 29th ruler. The former Sultan remained as Defense Minister and assumed the royal title Seri Begawan. In 1970, the national capital, Brunei Town, was renamed Bandar Seri Begawan in his honor. The Seri Begawan died in 1986. On January 4, 1979, Brunei and the United Kingdom signed a new treaty of friendship and cooperation. On January 1, 1984, Brunei Darussalam became a fully independent state. In the 14th to the 16th centuries Brunei Darussalam was the seat of a powerful sultanate extending over Sabah, Sarawak and the lower Philippines. Thus the current Sultan represents one of the oldest continuously ruling dynasties in the world. By the 19t h century, the Brunei Darussalam Empire had been whittled away by wars, piracy and the colonial expansion of European powers.
In 1847, the sultan concluded a treaty with Great Britain and in 1888 Brunei Darussalam officially became a British protectorate. In 1906, the Residential System was established in Brunei Darussalam. A British Resident was nominated as a representative of the British government to advise the sultan in all matters except Malay customs, traditions and Islamic religion.
The 1959 Agreement established a written constitution which gave Brunei Darussalam internal self-government. In 1971 the agreement was amended and revised to assert full internal independence except defence and external affairs.
In 1967 His Highness Sultan Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien abdicated in favour of his son Pengiran Muda Mahkota Hassanal Bolkiah. On January 1, 1984 Brunei Darussalam resumed full independence and the Sultan took office as Prime Minister, Finance Minis ter and Home Affairs Minister, presiding over a cabinet of six. In October 1986, the cabinet was expanded to 11 members, with His Majesty relinquishing the portfolios of Finance and Home Affairs and taking over the Defence portfolio which his late father had held since 1984. In 1988 another reshuffle brought about the elevation of the deputy minister to a full minister and the creation of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources designed to boost the country's development.

Brunei History
€I was awakened at about two o’clock in the morning. I heard my brother grousing from the next door bedroom. I did not felt sleepy at all and so I decided to sit by an open window in my bedroom, letting the cool and soothing morning air come in. The sky above the tress was cold- dark blue, streaked with high, dark cloud that hurried across the heaven as if pursued. It was around 2:30 in the morning when the dawn started to break.
Precisely three o’clock later that morning, the sound of barking had startled me. I heard the “brmph” of the bombs as they hit the ground and exploded. I was terrified. Quickly, I got dressed. The planes sounded as though they were going away. I switch the candle on but no light glow reassured me.

Barunah!' exclaimed early settlers who reached the Brunei River. The classical Malay expression meant excellence of the site for settlement, security, access and richness of the surrounding. In short, "Oh, Yeah!". It is said the exclamation became the name of the new city-state. Barunah later changed to Barunai. Barunai, of Sanskrit origin, comes from the word Varuna. In its Malay context, it referred to a nation of seafarers and traders. Brunei and Borneo were among early European references to the state and the island. The second sultan, Sultan Ahmad, was the first to name 'Brunei' from the word 'Barunah'. Darussalam, Arabic terms for Abode of Peace, was added in the 15 th century by the third sultan, Sharif Ali, to emphasise Islam as state religion, and to enhance its spread. Old Brunei was a nation of Malay Hindu-Buddhists, according to a Chinese account of Puli, believed to be an early Chinese reference to Brute Old Brunei was said to have Similar Malay-Hindu Buddhist traditions and customs as Funan or Kumlun, Chinese names for the first Malay state in Indochina during the early Christian era. Indians knew it as Sailendra, and Arab traders called it Kamrun.

Brunei History, Brunei Darussalam
Travel Guides Brunei Darussalam Brunei History The empire that once included the entire Borneo, Brunei is presently one of the smallest countries of the world - two small slivers of land located in the northern coast of Sarawak. This tiny country has South Asia’s largest oil fields. Apart from the oil fields, Brunei is well known for its pure and beautiful rainforests.
Early history
Historians are of the opinion that there was a predecessor to the present Sultanate of Brunei , which was known as Po-ni by the Chinese. The presence of this trading kingdom can be traced from the seventh or eighth century AD, according to the Chinese and Arabic chronicles. The kingdom saw a new ruler in the ninth century who was a Hindu ruler from Sumatra’s Srivijaya dynasty. There was a brief change in the leadership when the kingdom was taken over by the Majapahit Empire of Java. Soon afterwards the country of Brunei became independent. The golden era When we fast forward the rule to the era between 15th and 17th century, we see that the empire went through a golden period. Its rule extended to the northern Philippines and Borneo. Brunei became an extremely powerful empire under the reign of fifth Sultan, Sultan Bolkiah. The ninth ruler, Sultan Hassan, also made this country a powerful empire in the South East Asia.

It is surrounded by Malaysia and has two parts physically separated by Malaysia, almost being an enclave. Strategically located on the South China Sea, close to vital sea lanes linking Indian and Pacific Oceans, it has an exclusive economic fishing zone that extends as far as Louisa Reef in the southern Spratly Islands although it makes no public territorial claim to the offshore reefs. The Sultanate of Brunei Darussalam is located in the North-West corner of the island of Borneo, bounded by the waters of the South China Sea. The country consists of 5,765 sq km of land, most of which is still covered by rich tropical rainforest. Of this the majority is still primary virgin rainforest which plays host to a large variety of flora and fauna including eagles, hornbills, bears, civets, snakes, crocodiles, butterflies, spiders, pitcher plants and the giant Rafflesia. The population of Brunei Darussalam stands 385,000. The Malays are the majority of the population, while the Chinese, Indians, and other indigenous groups make up the rest. Brunei's population is a youthful one; half its people are under the age of 20 and males outnumber the females by a slight margin.
Malay is the official language but English is widely spoken, especially in business and tourism circles.
