by Bob on January 25, 2010 I have written quite a bit about budgeting over the last few years since making a personal budget was one of the keys to getting my finances under control. Just like most people, I always hated the idea of budgeting, but once you get a better understanding of the freedom that comes with using a budget you fall in love with it. Or at least I have.
Budgeting can be fun!
The sacrifices are only temporary!
But it is important to remember that financial sacrifices you make are almost always temporary. Most of us get ourselves in financial messes and have to dig ourselves out of them. Once you are out of it, things are a bit easier to maintain.

Follow the steps below as you set up your own, personalized budget:
  • Make a list of your values. Write down what matters to you and then put your values in order.
  • Set your goals. Write down your goals. Think about what you want to accomplish financially in the next three months, the next year, and the next three years. Determine your income.
  • Figure your available income (the amount of your take-home, or net, pay). Determine your expenses.
  • Review your checkbook register, credit card statements, store receipts, and more. Where is your money really going? "Fixed expenses," such as a rent, auto, or student loan payments, are easy to determine. "Flexible expenses," such as food, clothing, and entertainment, vary from month to month. Don't forget about expenses, such as taxes or insurance, that are billed quarterly, semi-annually, or yearly.

by J. Money on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 Like what you see? Sign up to our RSS feed , or get weekly recaps through our V.I.P. Newsletter (Guest post by Jeff Kosola) Budgeting is something that financial savvy people do every month. The problem with budgeting is that is can become mechanical and/or boring. We understand that living beneath our means is the best way to become financial independent. We understand that without accounting for every dollar before it’s spent will result in squandering money on useless items. We also understand that budgeting is completely boring and something not many people look forward to doing each month (unless you are like me or J. Money). Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a way to make budgeting fun and exciting each month? Wouldn’t it be great if you could really make “ Budgets Sexy ”? Well now you can.

I am terrible with money and have even started consumer credit counseling. They gave me a sample budget, but I really needed something that showed what I actually spent versus what I planned on spending. This program is so easy to use. Budgeting
Definition: Establishing a planned level of expenditures, usually at a fairly detailed level. A company may plan and maintain a budget on either an accrual or a cash basis. Business budgeting is one of the most powerful financial tools available to any small-business owner. Put simply, maintaining a good short- and long-range financial plan enables you to control your cash flow instead of having it control you. The most effective financial budget includes both a short-range, month-to-month plan for at least one calendar year and a long-range, quarter-to-quarter plan you use for financial statement reporting. It should be prepared during the two months preceding the fiscal year-end to allow ample time for sufficient information-gathering. The long-range plan should cover a period of at least three years (some go up to five years) on a quarterly basis, or even an annual basis. The long-term budget should be updated when the short-range plan is prepared.
