Bulgaria culture
Hundreds of years of occupation by different civilizations have resulted in a rich and varied Bulgarian culture that is a mix of Slavic, Thracian, and Bulgarian, along with other influences including Byzantine, Greek, Turkish, Roman, and Gypsy. Stories and folklore passed down the ages form a vital part of Bulgarian people and many legends and traditions continue to play an important role in modern generations of Bulgarian families. Song, dance, music, costumes and jewellery all form part of the rich Bulgarian heritage. There is a great deal of historic culture to be discovered in Bulgaria. Much of this fascinating history can be found in exhibitions at the National Museum of History in Sofia as well as the local museums in several of the regional towns. There are many valuable remnants of prehistoric cultures throughout Bulgaria and several important caves feature the traces of Paleolithic and Neolithic cultures. There are also fine examples of Thracian treasures, burial tombs, and beautiful frescoes.

Maybe your family, your friends, or something you own. What about your way of lifethe town or city you live in and the country where you live? Now imagine if someone were trying to take that away from you. What would you do to keep it? Would you fight? In Bulgaria, there was a man in this position. His country was being taken away from him. He wasn't ready to let it go without a fight. It's hard to believe, but this man chose to fight not with fists or guns, but with poems. This man's name was Hristo Botev, and he is one of Bulgaria's most respected writers. Every student in Bulgaria knows his name and his works. In Bulgaria's capital, there is a main street named after him.

The Club Bulgaria - Culture Contemporary Bulgarian culture is a lively blend of the millennium-old folk traditions of the region; a more formal culture, which played a vital role in the emergence of national consciousness under Ottoman rule and in the development of a modern state; and, from World War II until the early 1990s, the development of a strong socialist element. Because Bulgaria's population is largely homogeneous, the degree of cultural variation even at the regional level is small. The state encourages cultural development at all levels of society and supports the dissemination of culture, particularly through schools, libraries, museums, publishing and the press, radio, television, and cinema. The arts The first performances of Bulgarian classical music date from the 1890s, and the earliest Bulgarian opera, by Emanuil Manolov, was performed in 1900. He, along with other Bulgarian composers, concentrated on solo and choral vocal works, although between World War I and World War II several symphonies and works for ballet, in addition to choral and opera works, were created by such composers as Lyubomir Pipkov, Petko Stainov, and Pancho Vladigerov. Bulgarian composers in the second half of the 20th century have experimented with new tonality in vocal and instrumental music. Recordings and concert tours abroad have won much wider audiences for traditional Bulgarian vocal music. The Bulgarian theatre remains a popular source of entertainment. The former socialist government encouraged the adoption of political themes for modern plays, as evidenced by the works of Georgi Karaslavov (190480) in his depictions of the Bulgarian countryside and the socialist struggle for social justice. World classics and modern foreign dramas are also produced.

Register your account here Bulgaria's reputation as the cradle of Slav culture can be attributed to its rich history, from the treasures of the Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis (4600-4200 B.C), described by experts as 'the world's oldest gold and Europe's most ancient civilization' to the legends of Spartacus and of Orpheus, born in the Rhodopi Mountains. An ancient art, for which Bulgaria became renowned, is that of religious icon-painting - many outstanding pieces are on view in churches today, others form museum displays. Other traditional applied arts are still practised, among them fine embroidery and weaving richly-coloured rugs.

    BULGARIAN HISTORY
The Bulgarian lands are ancient crossroads. They were populated from remote antiquity and remember many ancient civilizations. The state of Bulgaria has 1300 years old history and according to the statistics it is ranked third (after Greece and Italy) for the number of its archaeological monuments.
The earliest inhabitants of the present Bulgarian lands were the Thracians
Ancient Greek historian Herodotus describes the Thracians as the second biggest tribe in the Ancient world, after the Indians. The most famous Thracians were Spartacus and Orpheus.
Spartacus was born on the territory of present-day town of Sandanski (south-western Bulgaria) and as an adolescent was sold into slavery in ancient Rome. Later he became the legendary gladiator that led the biggest slave uprising in the Antiquity.
Orpheus is known for his incredible talent as a musician and singer. He was born near the present village of Guella in the Rhodope mountain a little before the Trojan war. The legend tells that he was the greatest singer of all time and even the wild animals stopped to listen to his music. Also he took part in the quest of the Argonauts together with Jason and Heracles.
