BELGIUM IN BULGARIA: History repeated
An overview of Bulgarian-Belgian economic ties
Fri, Jul 18 2008 11:00 CET by Elena Koinova 648 Views Whether it was because in 1894 then-Bulgarian prime minister Konstantin Stoilov vowed to turn the newly independent state into the "Belgium of the Orient", or because Bulgaria was part of Belgium's global business offensive, Belgium was the largest trade partner and investor in Bulgaria's nascent economy until the outbreak of World War 1. In 1898, Ernest Solvay, the famed founder of Belgian industrial conglomerate Solvay, opened the Sofia-based sugar-making plant, Bulgaria's first. With it, he laid the foundations not only of sugar production but also of sugar beet cultivation in Bulgaria. Belgian investors financed the construction of what remains the country's flagship match-making plant in Kostenets. Belgians, again, were majority shareholders and operators of Sofia's first electric and tram companies, as well as of, among other enterprises, a score of banks and leather-production plants. A century later, history repeated itself. Since the early 1990s, both commercial give-and-take and investment flows have grown exponentially. Bulgaria's Economy and Energy Ministry has named Solvay Bulgaria's largest strategic producer for its portfolio of soda, salt and limestone processing assets. Belgium is invariably in the top 10 of Bulgaria's trade partners and investors. Last year it was Bulgaria's ninth-largest trade partner. By size of investments in the period 1996/2005, it ranked sixth.

Bulgaria : History
The History of the land now known as Bulgaria has been determined by its location between Asia and Europe, by its propinquity to powerful states competing for land and determine at the junction of trade routes and strategic military positions, and by the strong national territorial drive of various Bulgarian states. Before the Christian era, Greece and Rome defeated the region and left substantial impressions on the culture of the people they found there. The Bulgar tribes, who arrived in the seventh century from west of the Urals, have occupied the region continuously for thirteen centuries. Over time Bulgarian culture merged with that of the more numerous Slavs, who had preceded the Bulgars by one century. After converting to Christianity and acquired a Slavic language in the 9th century, the Bulgarians consolidated a distinct Slavic culture that consequently passed through times of both developmentist freedom and subordination to outside political systems. From the 9th until the 14th century, Bulgaria was a controlling force in the Balkans because of its aggressive military tradition and strong sense of national identity. The chief rival and neighbor, the Byzantine Empire, left a lasting political impression on two Bulgarian empires as it competed with them for regional domination. Marking the declension of both the Byzantine and the Bulgarian political structures, the fall of Istanbul to the Ottoman Turks in 1453 began four centuries of Turkish suppression of Bulgarian cultural and political institutions.

Bulgaria History – A Brief Description
As you travel through the rich Bulgaria history, seeing spectacular views of natural beauty, it becomes easily apparent why centuries of invaders attempted to conquer this beautiful land. The proud Bulgarians have called this their home for thirteen centuries. The scenic landscape in Bulgaria takes on many forms; you have the choice of snow skiing down white-capped mountains or sun bathing beside the coast of the Black Sea. Don’t be taken in by the name, Black Sea, the beaches are sandy white and the water clear blue. The Black Sea has been theorized to be the site of Noah’s Ark and the Great Flood. Age-old tombs are riddled through Bulgarian history to be explored. The Varna Necropolis, a 3500-3200 BC burial site, which holds the oldest example of worked gold lies in Bulgaria. The saying goes in every country, don’t bring up sensitive subjects pertaining to religion, the weather or politics. Here’s a bit of a history lesson to understand where this nation draws its strength- Conquests of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires engraved their history into the countryside of Bulgaria. Displayed in the magnificent architecture, the conquerors left their mark on ancient monasteries, churches, and cathedrals. Bulgaria also invented the Cyrillic alphabet, second most widely used alphabet in the world.
