Due to Bulgaria's location in southeastern Europe it has been neighbors with some of the biggest empires in the world. Despite having been ruled for many years by neighboring empires, the people of Bulgaria have maintained a sense of national pride that persists to this day. For parts of its early history, the land of Bulgaria belonged to different kingdoms. At first, Bulgaria was part of the Macedonian kingdom. The Romans threw the Macedonians out, and then the Thraco-Illyrians threw the Romans out. Finally, in 679, a group of people called the Bulgars moved in and took over. The Bulgars are believed to be of Indo-Iranian origin. They set up the first Bulgarian Empire and ultimately took over Macedonia in the 9th century. As Slavs moved into Bulgaria, the Bulgars became out numbered. Finally, the Bulgars adopted most of the Slavic ways of life and language.

Bulgaria : History
Ancient Thrace was partially located on the territory of modern Bulgaria, and Thracian culture provides a wealth of archeological sites within Bulgaria. In the second century A.D., the Bulgars came to Europe from their old homeland, the Kingdom of Balhara situated in the Mount Imeon area (present Hindu Kush in northern Afghanistan). The first Bulgarian state was established in 635 A.D., located along the north coast of the Black Sea. In 681 A.D. the first Bulgarian state on the territory of modern Bulgaria was founded. This state consisted of a mixture of Slav and Bulgar peoples. In 864, Bulgaria adopted Orthodox Christianity. The First Bulgarian Kingdom, considered to be Bulgaria's "Golden Age," emerged under Tsar Simeon I in 893-927. During this time, Bulgarian art and literature flourished. Followers of Saints Cyril and Methodius are believed to have developed the Cyrillic alphabet in Bulgaria in the early 10th century. During the first half of the 20th century, Bulgaria was marred by social and political unrest. Bulgaria participated in the First and Second Balkan Wars (1912 and 1913) and sided with the Central Powers, and later the Axis Powers, during the two World Wars. Although allied with Germany during World War II, Bulgaria never declared war on the Soviet Union and never sent troops abroad to fight under Nazi command. Near the end of World War II, Bulgaria changed sides to fight the German army all the way to Austria; 30,000 Bulgarian troops were killed.

History
The history of the land now known as Bulgaria has been determined by its location between Asia and Europe by its proximity to powerful states competing for land and influence at the junction of trade routes and strategic military positions and by the strong national territorial drive of various Bulgarian states. Before the Christian era Greece and Rome conquered the region and left substantial imprints on the culture of the people they found there. The Bulgar tribes who arrived in the seventh century from west of the Urals have occupied the region continuously for thirteen centuries. Over time Bulgarian culture merged with that of the more numerous Slavs who had preceded the Bulgars by one century. After converting to Christianity and adopting a Slavic language in the ninth century the Bulgarians consolidated a distinct Slavic culture that subsequently passed through periods of both expansionist independence and subordination to outside political systems. From the ninth until the fourteenth century Bulgaria was a dominant force in the Balkans because of its aggressive military tradition and strong sense of national identity. The chief rival and neighbor the Byzantine Empire left a lasting political imprint on two Bulgarian empires as it competed with them for regional domination. Marking the deterioration of both the Byzantine and the Bulgarian political structures the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks in 1453 began four centuries of Turkish suppression of Bulgarian cultural and political institutions.
