Possibilities for Change:
Fresh Perspectives on anorexia/bulimia
In the battle against anorexia/bulimia, individuals, the community and social institutions, are either anorexia/bulimia-supporting or fighting against anorexia/bulimia - there is no middle ground. To treat anorexia/bulimia as a problem merely about food, to believe in a genetic basis of behavior, to simply see the problem as an individual pathology, or to treat the problem only through pharmaceuticals, is extremely pro-anorexic/bulimic. These strategies help to maintain the problem by denying the scope of the problem. Pro-anorexic/bulimic ideas would have us believe anorexia/bulimia exists in a vacuum: it is a freak of nature, that it is merely a case of bad genes, the temperment of spoiled, little, rich girls. To take a stance against the problem - to be anti-anorexic/bulimic - is to realize there is a definite and necessary place for medicine in the treatment of anorexia/bulimia. It is also important to realize there are a multitude of social factors living at the very heart of the problem.

    Bulimia Statistics
Bulimia statistics indicate that the problem is growing in the United States and not just in women. People who study this condition are seeing the rates of bulimia increase among males. Furthermore, people (especially females) are developing bulimia at earlier ages and carrying it into the older adult years.

"If shop mannequins were real women, they'd be too thin to menstruate."
Eating disorders have among the highest mortality rates of all mental disorders, killing up to 6 percent of their victims. Each year millions of people across the world are affected by serious and sometimes life-threatening eating disorders. The vast majority - more than 90% - of those afflicted with eating disorders are adolescent and young adult women.
Despite the fact that many people think of an eating disorder as being an unhealthy quest for a perfect body, eating disorders are not about vanity and not really about weight. Eating disorders are complex, psychological illnesses where people try to control conflict and stress in their lives by controlling food. The food, weight, and body image issues are identifiable symptoms of deep-rooted, often difficult-to-identify problems.
Approximately 1% of adolescent girls develop anorexia nervosa, a dangerous condition in which they can literally starve themselves to death. Another 3% of young women develop bulimia nervosa, a destructive pattern of excessive overeating followed by vomiting or other "purging" behaviors, such as starving or laxatives, to control their weight.
This page is dedicated to all who are caught in the struggle of an eating disorder. As a sufferer myself, I know how hard it is to find accurate and relevant information on this topic. This page aims to provide both information and support to sufferers and their supporters.

Dr. Padolsky understands the stress that patients with bulimia experience and will do everything he can to help his bolemic patients.
http://www.atlantadentist.com/Bulimia.html
Bulimia information from the Atlanta Dental Group PC The word bulimia comes from the Greek boulimia meaning " the hunger of an ox ", ultimately from the Greek words bous meaning ox and limos meaning hunger It's when a person eats a great deal of food in a short time ( binging ) and forces herself to throw up to get rid of the food ( purging It creates a severe problem for the teeth because the stomach acid thrown up coats the teeth and digests them. This bulimia effect can cause a patient to lose all her teeth in her twenties. There is a lot of shame and embarrassment for the bulimia patient and the patient usually tries hard to hide the fact that she is throwing up. Many close relatives of the patient never realize that she is throwing up and because of this, dental treatment is often not begun until it is too late. Most bulimia patients are really good people who sought to please their parents as youths, were very good students and often have actively participated in athletics. They are driven individuals. However, these patients often have low self esteem, are over dependent on the approval of others and have difficulty expressing anger. A patient's feeling of being out of control, along with being disgusted at her own behavior, can lead to depression. The backs of the upper front teeth are the first to go in a bulimia patient. When the patient throws up, the digesting food is hurled against the backs of the upper front teeth and the backs of these teeth begin to melt away ( tooth erosion ). When the enamel coating goes the back of the teeth look yellow because the underlying dentin is yellow. The treatment needed is to place

Bulimia Causes
Though the exact cause of bulimia is not known, a number of factors appear to influence its development.
  • Studies have shown eating disorders occur more frequently in relatives of people with bulimia than in others. This frequency appears to be related to genetics, but family influences may also be important. Researchers have suggested that altered levels of the chemical serotonin in the brain play a role. Serotonin levels can be related to the development of clinical depression.
