Burkina Faso- General Overview
Although it is not a classic tourist destination, the heart of Western Africa may offer you safari experiences, the atmosphere of former colonial towns such as Bobo-Dioulasso or of the capital city Ouagadougou. It is not a rich country, but it is one of the most stable in the region, trying to help its neighbors as well as to reach a ceasing of conflicts. It is a presidential republic, with a two chambers Parliament.
Burkina Faso -Population
The country is known for having a very small literate population. The level of people attending school is a little over 20 %, still a lot of people speak at least two languages: one of them is traditional like Moore, Bambara, Dioula, Peul and the official one which is French. Their behavior can be set as an example: it is an offence not to answer a greeting, foreigners and women are treated well, neither violence, nor theft are often and ethnic groups get along fine, each with its culture, religion(indigenous, Islam or Catholic) and language. The number of inhabitants is continuously increasing, but the life expectancy is around 40.
Burkina Faso -Cuisine
The local diet mainly consists of cereals, cooked peanuts, vegetable or rice sauces and stews. You may get some proteins from chicken or river fish. Some of the local specialties are “riz gras”, “brochettes” or sauces made with “nere” seeds. You may even taste bush rats, which are considered a delicacy. International cuisine is also available in Burkina Faso (even on streets), still avoid things like doughnuts fried and sold in a local market. Drink the local millet brewed beer or “bissap”, made of hibiscus flowers.

    GEOGRAPHY
Burkina Faso is made up of two major types of countryside: * The larger part of the country is covered by a peneplain which forms a gently undulating landscape with, in some areas, a few isolated hills, the last vestiges of a precambrian massif. * The south-west of the country forms a sandstone massif, where the highest peak is found: Ténakourou (749 m, 2,450 ft). The massif is bordered by sheer cliffs up to 150 metres (490 ft) high. The average altitude is 400 metres (1,300 ft) and the difference between the highest and lowest terrain is no greater than 600 metres (2,000 ft). Burkina Faso is therefore a relatively flat country, with a very few localised exceptions.
    Hydrography
The country owed its former name of Upper Volta to three rivers which cross it: le Mouhoun (formerly called the Black Volta), le Nakambé (the White Volta) and le Nazinon (the Red Volta). Le Mouhoun, along with la Comoé which flows to the south west, is the country's only river which flows year-round The basin of the Niger River also drains 27% of the country's surface. Its tributaries (le Béli, le Gorouol, le Goudébo and le Dargol) are seasonal streams, and only flow for 4 to 6 months a year but can cause large floods. The country also contains numerous lakes. The principal lakes are Tingrela, Bam and Dem, and the large ponds of Oursi, Béli, Yomboli and Markoye. Water shortages are often a problem, especially in the north of the county.

Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta) is a landlocked Sahel country that shares borders with six nations. It is normally bright yellow on a map. It lies between the Sahara Desert and the Gulf of Guinea , south of the loop of the Niger River . The land is green in the south, with forests and fruit trees, and desert in the north. Most of central Burkina Faso lies on a savanna plateau, 198-305 meters (650-1,000 ft.) above sea level, with fields, brush, and scattered trees. Burkina Faso's game preservesthe most important of which are Arly , Nazinga , and W National Park contain lion s, elephant s, hippopotamus monkey s, warthog s, and antelope s. Tourism is not well developed. Annual rainfall varies from about 100 centimeters (40 in.) in the south to less than 25 centimeters (10 in.) in the extreme north and northeast, where hot desert winds accentuate the dryness of the region. Burkina Faso has three distinct season s: warm and dry (November-March), hot and dry (March-May), and hot and wet (June-October). Rivers are not navigable.

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa. It is bordered by Benin, Ghana, Cte d'Ivoire, Mali, Niger, and Togo. The northern provinces lie in the Sahel , the belt of semi-arid land with low rainfall that fringes the Sahara desert. Here communities are frequently affected by cycles of drought and food shortage. During the dry season, permanent water sources are vital. Close to Burkina Faso's northern-most border there is a remarkable freshwater lake, the Mare d'Oursi, which is fringed by sand dunes. The lake is a magnet not only to local farmers, herders and livestock, but also to the many species of bird which migrate across the Sahara twice a year, breeding in Europe and spending winter in Africa. Many species of wading birds feed here on their journey, and sand martins and swallows can be seen passing through on their autumn migration. Further South the rainfall is heavier, supporting the small-scale farming which provides a livelihood for most of the population. Several national parks preserve the wooded grassland (or 'savannah') that once covered most of the country. The P and Nazinga reserves, and the Parc d'Arli and Parc du W (yes, it really is spelt like that!) provide a refuge for antelope, baboon, buffalo, elephant, hippopotamus, hyaena, leopard, lion, and warthog, as well as a wide variety of birds.
