CULTURE
Each ethnic group has its own artistic style but the art of the Mossi, Bobo and Lobi are the most famous. The Mossi are known for their antelope masks; impressively tall masks, which are over 2m (7ft) high and painted in red or white. The masks are usually worn at funerals and when guarding certain fruits. The Bobo make large butterfly masks, painted in stripes of red, white and black, that are used to invoke the deity Do in fertility ceremonies. The Bobo actually have an entire zoos-worth of animal masks but the butterfly masks are the only ones worn horizontally. The Lobi have one of the best preserved traditions in Africa, including the dyoro initiation rites for young boys. Lobi art, especially the wood carvings, which protect the family, are highly valued. Burkina Faso has led the way in the renaissance of African art and culture. The FESPACO Film Festival, occuring every two years, had a humble beginning in 1969 but has since grown to become a chic West African version of Hollywood's independent cine scene, without the pouting next-biggest-thing, air kissing executives, and frenzied bidding wars. A different cultural festival, occurring in the non-FESPACO years, covers other artistic pursuits - music, dancing and theatre. As an adjunct to this, Burkina Faso hosts the continent's largest craft market.

Main article: Literature of Burkina Faso Literature in Burkina Faso is based on the oral tradition , which remains important. In 1934, during French occupation, Dim-Dolobsom Ouedraogo published his Maximes, pensées et devinettes mossi Maximes, Thoughts and Riddles of the Mossi ), a record of the oral history of the Mossi people. The oral tradition continued to have an influence on Burkinabé writers in the post-independence Burkina Faso of the 1960s, such as Nazi Boni and Roger Nikiema The 1960s saw a growth in the number of playwrights being published.

O RIENTATION
Identification. Location and Geography. The country covers 105,869 square miles (274,200 square kilometers) in the center of West Africa, north of Ghana and Ivory Coast. It is a landlocked, flat country with an average altitude between 650 and 1,300 feet (200 and 400 meters) above sea level. There are some elevations in the west, the highest point being the Tenakourou (2,457 feet; 749 meters). The largest part of the former Upper Volta lies within the catchment area of the three northern tributaries of the Volta river, the Mouhoun, the Nazinon, and the Nakambe (formerly the Black, Red, and White Volta). The capital Ouagadougou lies almost in the geographical center of the country. It was the capital of a powerful Mossi kingdom and became the seat of French colonial administration in 1919. The tropical climate has a wet season and a dry season. The northern Sahelian zone, which is adjacent to the Sahara desert, is much drier than the south, with only six to twenty-four inches (150 to 600 millimeters) of rain falling between June and September. In the southernmost Sudanic zone, rains usually start in May and end around October. Here the annual precipitation is from 35 to 51 inches (900 to 1300 millimeters). Rains show extreme variations from year to year, in both timing and quantity. They typically fall during short violent thunderstorms.

People of Burkina Faso The people of Burkina Faso can be divided into two major West African cultural groups - the Voltaic and the Mande. The Voltaic are the majority and include the Mossi, who constitute nearly half the population. Other ethnic groups include the Fulani, Lobi, Bobo, Senufo, Gourounsi, Bissa, and Gourmantche. Most of the population resides in rural areas. While French is the official language, languages pertaining to the Sudanic family are also spoken by about 90 percent of the population. About 49 percent of the population consists of Muslims and only about 34 percent follow traditional religions. The remaining 16 constitute the Christians, who are mostly Roman Catholic. Flag of Burkina Faso The Burkina Faso Flag has two equal horizontal bands - red at the top and green at the bottom. There is yellow five-pointed star in the center.

Economy of Burkina Faso Burkina Faso is a landlocked country with a very poor economy. The population is very high and 90% of them are engaged in agriculture. But the country lacks the required natural resources and has fragile soil that is deeply affected by the variations in climatic conditions. Industry remains dominated by government-controlled corporations and has not been generating profits. Following the African franc currency devaluation in January 1994, the government has updated its development program in collaboration with international agencies, and since then exports and economic growth have increased, but it still has a long way to go.
