Burma achieved independence from the United Kingdom on 4 January 1948, as the “Union of Burma.” It became the “Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma” on 4 January 1974, before reverting to the “Union of Burma” on 23 September 1988. On 18 June 1989, the State Law and Order Restoration Council adopted the name “Union of Myanmar.” This was recognised by the United Nations, but not by the US or UK Governments.
Burma is bordered by China on the north, Laos on the east, Thailand on the southeast, Bangladesh on the west, and India on the northwest, with the Andaman Sea to the south, and the Bay of Bengal to the southwest. One-third of Burma's total perimeter, 1,930 kilometres (1,199 mi), forms an uninterrupted coastline.

    Burma - Geography
History Culture Geography Religion ... Current Events Burma, renamed Myanmar by the current military regime, lies between Bangladesh and Thailand with coasts on the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. It also shares borders with China in the Northeast, India in the North west, and Laos in the Southeast.
The country's central plains have wide, navigable rivers and form the country's main agricultural region. The central region is surrounded by steep highlands. The highest point, situated at the northern tip of the country, is the Himalayan peak of Mt. Hkakabo Razi, which at 5,881 m is the highest peak in Southeast Asia. Burma experiences hot and wet summers because of the southwest monsoon, while winters are cooler and less humid. The monsoon rains, which bring coolness and water to Burma, also bring with them natural hazards such as cyclones, floods and landslides. The region is also prone to earthquakes. A major part of Burma is forested and logging is a major industry and one of the country's chief exports. Burma has fertile land with abundant natural resources and a predominantly agrarian economy. However, it suffers from extreme poverty, especially in the rural regions, as the economy has suffered for 40 years at the hands of repressive, authoritarian military regimes and which have been unable to put the country on a steady growth path.

INTRODUCTION
Background: Britain conquered Burma over a period of 62 years (1824-86) and incorporated it into its Indian Empire. Burma was administered as a province of India until 1937 when it became a separate, self-governing colony; independence outside of the Commonwealth was attained in 1948. Gen. NE WIN dominated the government from 1962 to 1988, first as military ruler, then as president, and later as political kingmaker. Despite multiparty elections in 1990 that resulted in the main opposition party winning a decisive victory, the ruling military junta refused to hand over power. Key opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient AUNG SAN SUU KYI, under house arrest from 1989 to 1995, was again placed under house detention from September 2000 to May 2002; her supporters are routinely harassed or jailed.
