Brief History of Burma continued To most observers' surprise, a free vote did take place on 27 May 1990. Of 485 parliamentary seats contested, the NLD won 392 (over 80%). Ethnic minority parties opposed to the SLORC won 65 more seats. The army-front NUP won only ten seats, a resounding rejection of military rule that demonstrated not only the depth of the Burmese peoples' alienation from the military regime, but also the failure of the generals to recognize their own unpopularity.
After six years of house arrest, during which she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Aung San Suu Kyi was released in July 1995. Early in 2001, she is again under de facto house arrest after repeatedly being blocked from visiting NLD supporters outside Rangoon. She continues to defy military intimidation and military decrees by speaking out against the dictatorship. In late 2000, junta generals and NLD leaders began the first substantive discussions in over a decade. While welcomed by all sides, their progress is uncertain. Burma's struggle for democracy, sadly, is far from over. Thomas R. Lansner

Burma was unified by Burman dynasties three times during the past millennium. The first such unification came with the foundation of the Pagan Dynasty in 1044 AD, which is considered the "Golden Age" in Burmese history. It is during this period that Theravada Buddhism first made its appearance in Burma, and the Pagan kings built a massive city with thousands of pagodas and monasteries along the Irrawaddy River. The Pagan Dynasty lasted until 1287 when a Mongol invasion destroyed the city. Ethnic Shan rulers, who established a political center at Ava, filled the ensuing political vacuum for a short time. In the 15th century, the Toungoo Dynasty succeeded again in unifying under Burman rule a large, multi-ethnic kingdom. This dynasty, which lasted from 1486 until 1752, left little cultural legacy, but expanded the kingdom through conquest of the Shans. Internal power struggles, and the cost of protracted warfare, led to the eventual decline of the Toungoo. The final Burman royal dynasty, the Konbaung, was established in 1752 under the rule of King Alaungpaya. Like the Toungoo Kings, the Konbaung rulers focused on warfare and conquest. Wars were fought with the ethnic Mons and Arkanese, and with the Siamese. The Burmese sacked the Siamese capital of Ayuthaya in 1767. This period also saw four invasions by the Chinese and three devastating wars with the British.

Death Railway
- The Death Railway (known also as Burma Railway or Burma Thai Railway) was a railway built from Thailand to Burma (now Myanmar) by the Japanese during World War II to complete the route from Bangkok to Rangoon and support the Japanese occupation of Burma. It was so called because of the human cost of its construction. History of Thailand (1768-1932) - From 1768 to 1932 the area of modern Thailand was dominated by Siam, an absolute monarchy with capitals briefly at Thonburi and later at Rattanakosin, both in modern-day Bangkok. The first half of this period was a time of consolidation of the kingdom's power, and was punctuated by periodic conflicts with Burma , Vietnam and the Lao states. Military history of Thailand - The Military History of Thailand is quite interesting. Thailand is a country that believes in peace. History of Thailand - The history of Thailand begins with the migration of the Thais into what is now Thailand during the first millennium. Prior to this, bronze and iron age civilisations had existed for several thousand years, plus later Mon, Malay and Khmer kingdoms.

History of Burma
Burma (called Myanmar by the current ruling military regime) is a multicultural society with diverse ethnic Nationalities and over 106 languages and dialects. The peoples' spiritual faiths also reflect the underlying diversity of history and culture. Throughout its history women have played an active role in national and political life. Traditional kingships and ethnic self-rule dominated in Burma and historical chronicles tell of powerful queens since ancient times. Self-rule ended with the British conquest of Burma in the 19th century. Burma was then alternatively controlled by the British and the Japanese. Woman played an active role in Burma's struggle for independence from British rule and Japanese occupation, and after almost 100 years under colonial rule, Burma gained her independence in 1948. The newly-independent Burma strove to be a multiparty democracy. Several women played prominent roles in public service, however the number of women in governing positions was low. In the first parliamentary elections in 1952, five women were elected to the Lower House of Representatives and seven women were elected to the Upper House of Representatives, both out of 125. The period of democracy did not endure, however, as the military general Ne Win seized power in 1962 and, under the guise of socialism, turned the country into a single-party political system. The military coup also curtailed the involvement of woman in affairs of the state.

At the same time, the regime, intent on dominating the entire country, has responded with brutal force, raping, slaughtering, or forcibly displacing millions of ethnic peoples. Several of the ethnic groups refuse to come under complete domination, and so the military has responded by attempting to wipe out all support. So far, in the past ten years, over 3,500 villages have been destroyed in eastern Burma. There are over 2 million internally displaced people, with well over a million who have fled to other countries.

Burma history through postage stamps
The Irrawaddy has an interesting article about a book on Burmese postage stamps which tracing the history of Burma up to 1988. The author, an activist, who has rallied again the illegal junta of army generals does not recognise the government of Burma post 1988... it's not legal... the elections were won far and square by Aung San Suu Kyi but she has not been allowed to lead the country. And, the illegal government continues it oppressive and deadly treatment of any and all who would oppose it.

    Burma - History
History Culture Geography Religion ... Current Events Burma today, as in the past, is home to numerous ethnic groups, the largest of which is the Burmans, comprising about 68% of the total population. Sizeable groups of ethnic Shans, Karens, Arakans, Chins, Kachins, Lahus, Was, Mons and others also make up the Burmese ethnic mix and played important roles in her history. The Burmans came to dominate the area, and conquered or achieved nominal hegemony over the other tribes during the 9th century, with the establishment of the first great empire, the Pagan (Bagan) kingdom. Prior to the establishment of Bagan, Burma saw the rise of two kingdoms, one established by the Mon in the south and the other by the Pyu in the north. The Burmese people began filtering into the upper and middle Irrawaddy valleys and by 849 they founded the kingdom of Bagan (Pagan) in a strategic location on the banks of the Irrawaddy river. It was also close to Mount Popa, home to the 37 NATS (indigenous spirits) of Burma which became incorporated into Buddhism and which are still worshipped throughout the country today. Background to the Political History of Myanmar (Burma)
The official name of the country is the Union of Myanmar (Myanmar from the Burmese word for the martial attributes of strong and fast ). It used to be the Union of Burma and even now most people outside of the country call it Burma but in actuality it is the Burman Empire, basically as it existed in the late nineteenth century when the British conquered it. That encounter was a matter of local imperialists (Burmans) clashing with a global imperialists (the British). But the area which encompasses what later was designated Burma was more of a cockpit in which various ethnic groups vied for control. The Burmans were in control at the time of the British conquest but there were times in history when other groups such as the Mons or the Tai people of the Shan State were dominant.

Location:
The mere mention of Myanmar brings to mind the land with its ancient palace, city walls, terraces, glittering golden pagodas and teeming whitewashed stupas. Occupying the largest area on the Southeast Asian peninsula, it has an area of about 680,000 square kilometers - roughly equal to France and United Kingdom put together. Inhabited by a population of over 47 million people belonging to 135 national races, Myanmar can easily be found on the world map, as sharing common borders with China in the north and the northeast, Laos in the east, Thailand in the south- east.India and Bangladesh in the west. In the south- west is the Indian Ocean and Myanmar's coastline extends from where Myanmar and Bangladesh meet, down southwards, ending in the southern extremity where Myanmar and Thailand meet - making a very long coastline of over 2000 kilometers.
Physical Features: The coastal region is known as Lower Myanmar, while the interior region is known as Upper Myanmar. A horseshoe-shaped mountain complex and the valley of the Irrawaddy River system are the country's dominant topographical features. The mountains of the northern margin rise to 5,881 m (19,295 ft) atop Hkakabo Razi, the highest peak in Southeast Asia. The two other mountain systems have northern to southern axes. The Arakan Yoma range, with peaks mostly between 915 m (3,000 ft) and 1,525 m (5,000 ft), forms a barrier between Myanmar and the subcontinent of India. The Bilauktaung Range, the southern extension of the Shan Plateau, lies along the boundary between southwestern Thailand and southeastern Lower Myanmar. The Shan Plateau, originating in China, has an average elevation of about 1,215 m (about 3,986 ft).
