The Topic:
Butterflies Easier - Butterflies are thin insects with four large, often bright colored wings. Harder - Butterflies and moths comprise the insect group called Lepidoptera. However, butterflies are different from moths. There are over 15,000 different species (kinds) of butterflies. Rain forests have the most kinds of butterflies; but butterflies live in woodlands, fields, prairies. Some even live on cold mountaintops, while many others live in hot deserts. Butterflies live almost everywhere in the world.

Butterflies Nymphalidae: Colobura sp., Brazil.
Smithsonian photo by Kjell B. Sandved.
(c) 1999 Smithsonian Institution. Numbers of species. Due to their bright colors and visits to flowers, butterflies are the most familiar of insects to humans. There are about 17,500 species of butterflies in the world, and around 750 species in the United States. Distinctive characteristics. Butterflies (and moths) are the only group of insects that have scales covering their wings, although some butterflies have reduced scales. They differ from other insects also by their ability to coil up their proboscis. Immatures. Caterpillars are the names given to the larvae of both butterflies and moths. They are usually very distinctive, and in some cases may be identified more easily than the adults. When they are developing, their skin may be shed four or more times, with each molt often changing the coloration and appearance of the caterpillar. They eat voraciously to transform plant material into tissues that they will need for metamorphosis. Plant associations.

Butterflies Lesson Plans and Ideas
The ideas and information in this section come from an article written by Jennifer Goodwin Smith in the January 1995 issue of Science and Children (p. 29-32). She planned and planted a school butterfly garden with sixth and seventh graders in Maryland, and wrote the article to make it easier for others to do similar projects.

Scottish butterflies Ringlet butterly basking in the sun in elm woodland let me know . I put these pictures up on the web for people to enjoy. If you want to use them for educational purposes, that's fine, but if you want to use them for commercial purposes, I'd appreciate it if you acknowledge the source (e-mail me for full details ), and make a donation to the British Butterfly Conservation Society . Many thanks. For many years I have been interested in British Butterflies, collecting photographs of them whenever I could get out into the countryside, or even the roadside verges near my house. Having lived for years in Surrey, with Box Hill and other important butterfly reserves close by, I have missed the variety of butterflies now I have moved to the Midlands. This is my collection of British Butterfly photographs, which I hope to expand eventually to include descriptions, information about the butterfly and its habitat, and more information like that. For those keen on photography, most of these were taken on either a Pentax MX SLR or a Canon A1 SLR, both using a Tamron SP300mm macro lens, or the standard 50mm lens with a 2x convertor. They were all photographed onto either Ektachrome or Kodachrome slide film (various speeds, but I preferred ISO64). Please also visit the British Butterfly Conservation Society and help prevent these beautiful creatures becoming extinct.

Butterflies!, features a lush, tropical garden filled with colorful plants and a multitude of live butterflies from Central and South America, East Africa, and Southeast Asia.
How many kinds of butterflies?
It changes every day! Butterflies! will usually have between 60 to 150 butterflies and 20 to 40 different species on any given day. Adult butterflies usually live for one to two weeks and we receive new butterflies from around the world each week. So, what's here one week probably won't be the same as what was here last week. Check out the Butterfly Gallery 1 Gallery 2 , and Gallery 3 for a sampling of the species found in Butterflies!
How many will you find?
That can depend on how many there are, but it also depends on how well you look:
  • Some will be flying. (These are often the easiest to spot.) Some will be eating at food stations. (These are good places to get close to the butterflies.) Some will be resting on plants. (Butterflies usually rest with their wings pointing up so you'll be looking at the undersides of the wings. This side of the wing is often less colorful and may even be camouflaged.)
